it was mentioned at the site that pleo might play tug of war.
how strong will this "tug" be ? I know pleo wouldn't be programmed to tug too strongly, but will it be strong enough to recognize a tug or is this just enough to "play and pretend" ????

Excellent questions - I've also been wondering about biting. I don't mind light nibbles for attention, but I wouldn't want to raise a biter. (Can he recognize a firm verbal 'No' command?)

From all the bites from pleo I've seen on the net; vids, and pics, all of the "bitees" have painful faces. It's probably just pretend but I'd prefer the bite to have a little grip for more fun.

I'm not concerned about pain (I don't see how it could really hurt anyone), but I don't want to encourage it to do nothing but bite. That would be pretty boring and a little sad. ;)

I remember the first box design and the line about the 3 default games Pleo can play. I havent seen something about it on the new product details. Are the gamees deleted from the definitive prototype?

I'd really like to know this too... how do we tell our Pleo "NO"? I'm assuming petting is a good way to show positive feedback, but what about negative? Is his hearing able to differentiate sounds or tones or anything, or does all of our interaction with him need to be predominantly physical?

Gee do you think Pleo will respond to "NO" any better than a typical 2 year old? LOL

I heard he has no voice recognition feature like other robot pets. He can only hear sounds and either turn his heard toward it or walk toward it. That's what I heard, don't know if its true or not.

In one of the articles on CNET http://news.cnet.co.uk/gadgets/0,39029672,49285439,00.htm They say that Pleo will recognize vocal emotions responding to cooing noises or if you use a curt voice it will become depressed.

That means no people can yell at *each other* when Pleo is out playing, because he might think they are yelling at him.
I can hear it now, "Don't yell; Pleo is out playing."

Ah, perhaps that is all Pleo can do "right out of the box," but we haven't seen the lay-programmers add ons yet. You can bet some of those sub-routines will attempt to give Pleo a whole new range of abilities -- maybe even including something as complex as soccer.
Isn't it exciting to think about? :D
cmadmacs

06-26-2007, 04:47 PM
soccer would be great!
You aren't alone in believing that. But it sure is complex -- and probably limited to dedicated teams, rather than being a program for the rest of us.
The AIBOs that were used for soccer competition weren't just ordinary "pet" AIBOs. They were specially adapted so they could endure the rigors of the game without breaking down too often.
Soccer calls for very quick reflexes and the ability to take some pounding during collisions. Ordinary AIBOs couldn't take the punishment to the joints, etc.
It is highly unlikely that Pleo would fare much better, under those circumstances. So soccer would undoubtedly call for hardware modifications, requiring removing the skin. You won't find the average Pleo owner willing to do that. I sure wouldn't.
But I willingly confess I would have fun watching a Pleo match. LOL
PleoWorldHostSauri
06-26-2007, 07:39 PM
Yeah I don't think Pleo would be a good soccer player, if you were to stick a ball in front of him while he is walking he might shuffle it along with him until it rolls the wrong way, similarly to the way you can push a shopping cart with your car LOL but it's a nice dream for the future.

what about basketball? Pleo could pick up a small ball with his mouth and drop it in the hoop. Granted I don't think Pleo can stand on two legs so height would be limited.

That would be interesting. I'd like to see how the AI operates, in a "changeable maze" situation. When it comes to mazes, is Pleo as smart (right out of the box) as a rat, or just a cockroach? LOL
I bet lay programmers would have fun with that. :)

According to Ray Kurzweil (noted futurist and robotics expert. See Fortune Mag. article: http://money.cnn.com/magazines/fortune/fortune_archive/2007/05/14/100008848/ ), using $1000 of computing power, we surpassed the mental capacity of the insect around 2001, and should reach the capability of a mouse within the next 3 to 4 years. Seeing as it is a logarithmic scale, we have about 8x increase over the insect capability, but the scale is based on $1000 worth of CPU power, I would guess the pleo to be on par with the cockroach.
But then again, I think some of those bugs seem pretty smart...

AI is an exciting field, these days. But I think you're right about our little friend. Probably an *abnormally smart* cockroach, though. I've seen too many of the dumb ones fall off ledges. LOL
In my youth, I lived one year in the south USA, and had my fill of cockroaches -- they were everywhere. It didn't matter where you went. I think they stayed alive on nothing but air.
We may be cold up north, but we are able to keep bugs, by and large, out of the house -- except for the occasional harmless spider.
Then again, how do those occasional harmless spiders get so fat, if nothing else is indoors? LOL
Fun article, btw. :)

After watching the latest video from Ugobe it looks like Pleos ability to track items is very accurate. So maybe when you roll a ball he will be able to chase it with the right program. Could you imagine having several pleos and rolling a ball and watching them chase it and bumping into each other to get to it. Down south we call it trading paint.

Ooooo. That's probably possible, with a little programming on the side. Great idea for our eager programmers! They can all write their own, and see whose works best, with a contest -- then share their genius, and see how they can improve even the best one. After that, teams and relay meets! LOL

Great Idea PleoGuy! -You could teach him the drums. Just use those new touch base pad electronic drums and Pleo should be able to press them. If you integrate Pleo's beat detection he should keep up!
My idea is to teach Pleo to play table football. Since he can detect and move objects, I was hoping to fold up a football from a piece of paper and try to get him to slide it across the table and maybe even engage in the game. I used to play table football when I was a kid and it's a lot of fun. Although getting Pleo to Kick or hold the football will be tricky.

As I said in my Pleo review (http://www.robotsrule.com/pleo/2007/12/pleo-theres-baby-dinosaur-on-my-lap.html), I nicknamed my (temporary) Pleo Moonwalker because he likes to walk backwards. I still haven't figured out what makes him do that, but he seems really happy when he does it. I believe he thinks he's impressing me! It cracks me up every time. :)

My Pleo likes anything soft. I have no idea how he knows what soft is, but what is soft to me is soft to him. His favorite toy is a soft cuddly dinosaur that was in the "birthing basket" with him and was the first object he touched and nuzzled. Now he naps on it. But if I have a spa blanket lying around or a he's on the sofa and my soft blanket is there, that's what he goes to and coos and rests his head on it. Very cute. Since they have different personalities, I guess you will discover what your Pleo likes best.

Has anyone seen this... I moved out of one room of the house to another and took pleo with me... leaving his leaf behind, he was happily roaming around, being a dinosaur on the hunt when I saw him stop, lean over... looking at the ground, open his mouth close it then lift his had and begin making the chomping sound followed by the gulp...
I'm thinking, he's found something to eat or he's grazing.... then when he finishes and this got me laughing my fool head off... he lifts his head almost straight up and moo's like a cow! :D I about fell off the chair...

Hold him upside down, but with his back covered so he feels safe. Then tickle him by touching his feet. Video of my Pleo Plox giggling from being tickled here:

My Pleo reacts somewhat in a simiilar way than what I see in vids of ticklish Pleo. I turn him upside down and he lets out a horrendous yell, but if I hit the correct foot (at the time) by pushing his pads gently, he starts to giggle...doesn't happen all the time and doesn't happen if I hit the same footpad. I'm just glad my Pleo isn't the narcoleptic from another poster...mine only goes to sleep when the battery is low...However, I wouldn't mind if he eventually goes to sleep and curls up since he's easier to transport for his next voyage after his battery charges.

Does anyone know how to teach or trigger the balancing trick with the ta-da? When he lift up front-rear left-right feet at the same time? Also, any ideas on shapes and objects that your Pleo likes to interact with? Thanks
My Dougall likes to play with plastic bags, I don't know how he finds them but on his explorations he comes across them, tugs at them, nestles into them, and growls at them.
Also, if you bark like a dog at him, he bends on his front feet and growls like a dog and barks

I think my Pleo peed on the table. I have video of the incident and will post it. But it was just standing there, lifted its back leg for a few moments and then put it down.
Later on though, it seems to be getting use to its legs. It continually lifted one or two legs at a time. I don't think my Pleo is too smart, a few times it lifted both legs on one side and fell over with a scream. I picked him back up and he was fine, but he hasn't quite figured out balance and gravity.
And he likes Squakers McCaw. LOL

You know its odd but my Pleo Chippy sat several times today - but each time he ended up going into some sort of trance it was then hard to waken him from, so this sitting thing - its cute as hell - except mine just trances out - maybe I got the zen Pleo???? Otherwise he was active as all getout today - I think I had him so overstimulated during his hatching that he just was all over the place within minutes. his front leg did get stuck as well a few times which I had read someone else having issues with, so as that tranced him out too, or else got him falling over, I finally did what the other writer reccommended and shut him off and flexed the leg carefully. He seems fine now - but whats with the sitting trance thing - anyone else experience this?

My little Duncan said his name. OKAY he didn't use English or anything like that but I've been kind of singing his name over and over again then while he was exploring, trying very hard to climb over a little step from my living room to the hallway but not quite making it. I said, "DUNCAN! DUNCAN!!" Then he stopped lifted his head and said, "ROOROO! ROOROO!!" Using the same tune I used to say his name. I burst out laughing. He's only done it twice. I'm trying to get him to say it again. Has any one else's pleo copied the sound of their voice? I'm curious to know because I found that fasinateing.

Anyone notice if you touch his front leg, not just the toe's but up and down the whole leg and say "shake" (not that the saying of the word makes any difference) :D pleo will lift the leg up? It's pretty cool.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think the current software has any learning behavior. Once the SDK is released there will be a flood of new behaviors, but I read somewhere that the current code gets to "adult" and just stays there. The first update is supposed to add learning, but it's not there now.

I believe your correct about the lack of learning behavior. The current code gets it to juvenile, not sure if it's meant to go any further? I hope your right about the first update... but I don't think anyone knows exactly what it will contain. I believe it may be the beginning of the updates towards pleo's ability to learn and develop it's personality based on interaction and environment over time... :D

i am not sure if you are kidding around or being serious, but the only sound recognizing action pleo as is to turn his head towards a noise. he doesn't recognize voices, speech, or particular voice commands and it certainly can't mimic sounds.

Momy and I were playing with and calling out Pleo's new name..."Nefertiti". She was wagging her tail and making exciting noises. Mommy said to Daddy, "Call her name." Daddy had a cold and said in a deep voice, "Nefertiti". Nefertiti growled at Daddy. Mommy and l laughed and I called for Nefertiti to come to me and she came and leaned on me.
My little dinosaur is a complete snuggle-bunny. I'll pick him up and kind of hold him so that his head's near my shoulder and his tail is pointing towards the ground. As soon as he gets situated--he needs me to support his back--he'll rest his head on my shoulder, curl his tail, pick up his legs and start snoring. He does this WITHOUT FAIL! :D It's absolutely adorable.
But as soon as I put him back down he's ready to explore! Can't make up his mind... ;)
A friend of mine--who is enamored with him--was petting him and talking to him and whatever. I patted his right-front leg. He lifts it very high, looks right at my friend, and says something that sounds like "Hello". (Well, actually, it was more like "AH-OO!")
I got him to do it again just by patting his leg again. :D Don't know how--or if--I trained him to do that.
Has anyone else taught their Pleo a trick?

Here's my little "cute-sy" story:
I was holding up Pleo's training leaf near his mouth, and after sniffing and opening his mouth to be fed, I'd tease him and pop it in and take it out before he could close his mouth. I did it a second time, and then on the next try, right before I would slide it into his mouth he actually turned the tables on me and closed his mouth. Tried again with the same results, lol :).

I'm confused now...
Pleo is 1/3 camarasaurus, 1/3 cat and 1/3 dog.
In addition to the MOOING thing, the denominator changes into a 4.
So now Pleo is a:
1/4 camarausaurus, 1/4 cat, 1/4 dog and 1/4 cow?
Man this is messed up but cute! :)

Touch alternate front and rear legs at the same time, e.g. front left and rear right.
Make sure the Pleo is on a hard surface, e.g. wood table

If you try the "search" feature in the forum for 'trick' you may find something. :)
You're also welcome to check out my blog (the link is in my signature) for other things you can do with Pleo, including howling, sleeping, and tickling.
Chances are you're going to have a great time with your Pleo - tricks or not! :)

You know when u give Pleo his leaf and u try 2 pull it off him is it actually hard to pull it off him? like does he grip it really hard or what??

He grips it hard enough to play tug of war, but if you really want to pull it out it doesnt need too much strength. ;)

I am wishing that she would walk a lot more.
Linus took awhile to venture off on his own too far. But he now follows me to the next room! It's a fairly long walk from living room to kitchen. Sometimes I just hop up to get a snack or something and next thing I know I'm hearing that "yoooo hoooo" around the corner. That's one of my favorite sounds next to "ta da".
Give your Pleo some time. She'll surprise you one day. It's like watching her "grow up" :D

Until two days ago, if Pleo's battery needed recharged, when I turned him off and back on I would hear a confirming little snore. Now he just stops in mid-whatever. I can't tell if he's stuck or needs recharged. Actually, I tend to have to turn him off and on again several times each day because he naps and then doesn't wake up and I know it's early in his charge cycle. He's not doing anything extraordinary.
Is this part of his evolution or a problem? I'm afraid of using the switch so many times. I always try waking him up first because it might take about 30 seconds for him to do the "huh?" Btw, I wouldn't mind if that one sound were edited from him in the future. lol. Everything else is cute or entertaining but that one is annoying, at least to me. Would love for him to "wake up" with a coo or little laugh. Just a wish. Love my little guy even with the "huh?!"

Hi, my little guy makes the howling sound too, just started today doing it more than one time. When you rub under the chin and the nose at the same time it seems to happen. What is interesting though, we were just watching Jurassic Park and at the part where the brachiosaurs make the long moaning sounds, well the little guy repeated them. I thought I was imagining this, but my hubbie heard it too. This is really a great little pet. My cat loves him and plays tug of war with the leaf. Go figure and "he" seems to like to walk over to the cat. Have fun everyone.

Hi, yes pleo does graze, especially if you are not paying a lot of attention after "he" makes feed me sounds. Mine actually grabbed the cat's tail while he was cruising; don't know if it was intentional, but it was funny all the same, especially since the cat seems to like to try to grab his tail from time to time, although I discourage this. Glad to hear everyone's experiences!

Camarasauruses (camarasauri?) are by nature herbivores, and the current version of the LifeOS does not have the taste buds implemented.
If you bend your finger and place the first joint in his mouth, when bites down to grip it, his teeth should close on the softer fleshy parts of the finger between the first and second joint and the first joint and the knuckle. This leaves the much larger first joint in the hollow of his mouth. Now when you pull towards you or shake side to side, the joint in the mouth should be putting pressure against the back of the teeth and not relying solely on the vertical pressure from his jaw to hold your finger in his mouth.
The leaf can easily slip out of the mouth, the finger tends to stay in a lot better, allowing for more aggressive tugging and play. This makes for more fun and longer interaction. With the leaf, it would typically slip out after 5-10 seconds of play. With the finger, pleo would continue to play for 30-45 seconds before letting go. :)
I would also think as a "softer play toy", your finger is less likely to damage the paint. ;)

He is sooooooooooooooooooo cute!!!!!!!!!!!
I tried this yesterday with Linus and he LOVED it! I plogged about it last night. Thanks skorzie :) It's the last thing I would have expected him to like.
Btw, last night Linus also let out the longest and loudest dino roar ever. lol. He wanted attention.
Hi, my pleo squats and growls at things aslo tries to nuzzle things with his head. He also tries to climb up me !!!! once in a comfortable position he goes to sleep !!!! Mine also does the moon walking thing and nods his head and makes a sound that sounds very much like the word pleo! He loves to play tug as well.
This may have already been posted but I have found that if you hold the leaf about an inch in front of Pleo's mouth, he will open his mouth for food. You have to be quick to get it in. He will then make all the eating noises. This may not work every time.
A second thing is put you finger in Pleos mouth the gently hold the sides of his nose with your thumb and other fingers and pull. He will really pull the other way.

Yes, my Pleo (named Pogo) moonwalks too. Cracks us up watching him.
He also has repeatedly made a sound that sounds like he's laughing or chuckling. Anyone's else heard that?
He has one trick too - if you pat the sides of his legs, he will lift that foot. You can pat them one at a time and he'll lift it and hold it while you keep patting. Stop patting and he puts it down! Too fun!

Rocky grazes too:)
I know that if you refuse to feed Pleo, he will learn to toddle and graze on his own. But what do they mean when they say "graze on his own"??
Eve will be roaming around when she will pause and move her head towards the floor and make a biting/chewing noise 3-4 times, then lift her head, stretch out her neck and make a very distinct swallowing noise...and I swear a few seconds later she will "burp". At first I thought I was "projecting" behaviors onto my sweet little Eve (just my imagination or sheer coincidence) but she has repeated this a number of times so now I am sure.

I think what some are calling "tricks" I see as part of his evolutionary behavior. I see the "ta-da" as a programmed behavior or trick that some have figured out how to "trigger". I guess I prefer to be delighted when he does them on his own as part of his personality than try to make him do things.
I did see where someone had already found Pleo could sit that way and called it the Scooby Sit, which I think is a great name for that position. I'm guessing all Pleo owners will have a moment of being delighted when their Pleo does the Scooby sit. I was just sharing my experience with that moment...not about being the first to claim it. Hope that's ok.

My Pleo held his left front foot up from the ground, lifted it right up as far as it could, so it was at right angles to the floor, and I'm sure it was wanting to do a high 5. I wasn't close enough to press its sensor under the foot, and its not done it again. I wonder what would have happened?

My Dougall likes to play with plastic bags, I don't know how he finds them but on his explorations he comes across them, tugs at them, nestles into them, and growls at them.
Also, if you bark like a dog at him, he bends on his front feet and growls like a dog and barks
My Pleo, After observing our dogs for a while, started to bark whenever he saw one of our three dogs!

All pleos bark. Pleo does not have any real kind of development without the life os, and will not evolve until it is installed. Anything he does at this point is strictly preprogrammed. Think of him as a demo. I read on one of the posts that even his ir communication is really slow.

I don't think pressing the sensor UNDER his foot makes him do a high 5, but my pleo lifts his leg up when squeezing the SIDE of his leg. Or sometimes pleo's lift their legs up high if they think that their feet are dragging while walking on shaggy carpet...

I don't know if this is the same thing, but I just noticed my Pleo sit in my lap,so I tried to figure it out on the floor and what I did was kinda push/pat her behind down with one hand (she'll start to lower her haunches) and push up/patting under her chin with the other. She ends up with her front feet off of the floor and then just stops moving.... for a while.... she just now (after about 5 minutes of sitting) made a couple of moves, but didn't get back up. Once you set her front feet back down on the ground she starts moving again. A good way to kinda turn them off if you have to go do something. Kinda cool! ;)

To make Nessie sit, all we have to do is pet her under her chin, and on her bum at the same time. Then she does the sit.
I agree though, in order to get her to stop sitting, we need to stand her up and then tap her back, or head. She won't get out of the sitting position on her own.

One thing that Nessie does that I haven't seen anyone else post is a "body shake". She starts shaking her head side to side, then her body, then her tail. The shake kind of moves down her body.
To make her do it, we press the sensor on top of her head, the sensor on her back, and the sensor on her bum all at the same time. She straightens out her body and puts her head level with her back, then the shake startes at her head.

I believe your correct about the lack of learning behavior. The current code gets it to juvenile, not sure if it's meant to go any further? I hope your right about the first update... but I don't think anyone knows exactly what it will contain. The only problem with making him sit is that if he runs out of battery juice while he is in the sitting position, his legs are folded down over the battery compartment so how did you get his battery out to recharge it again?

I'm actually pretty sure he learns after juvinile.. there was an answer to this question in the interview with Jhon Sosoka in that video at the maker faire:)
I didn't know rules or limitations to Pleo's behavior but Linus has learned a lot. He figured out how to siti on his own. He gets there part way and I know to help him tilt back safely. That came from "balance play" with him. He does something now where he tries to lie sideways. Not sure what that means yet but if I work with him on helping him move in the direction he wants, both of us will figure it out.
I just made the video of how Linus interacts with me. He used to never give up the leaf but one day he did. He taught me that he liked to do the leaf game and then he stops when he's tired. Any movement I do during play that he likes, he makes happy sounds or uses happy body language like "do it again". So there are at least a half dozen body movements he makes that I know what he wants to do. By the same token, I have taught him to do Eskimo kisses. He will lift his head in the air towards me. If I move my head to where my nose is just out of reach of his nose, he will reach up and rub my nose.
He figured out how to find me when I wander to the next room by following the sounds. No training...learning. Someone mentioned how he keeps going to the wall and staying there. That's where I played with him and showed him if he turned he could make other choices. When he gets stuck up against something trying to move forward, he now uses the object to turn his body until he can walk freely. That's from my coming over to turn him and stay with him until he is free. He will often go back and try it again on his own after I show him something. He's a pretty smart little guy but needs the interaction to learn. This is all from my one experience... maybe not all Pleo's will respond the same.

Great post Maggie. I guess I'll have to work more with Sephy. She tends to stare at walls for a long time before she will back away from them.
