you only need atleast 32MB for pleo i bought 256MB cards you know just in case i needed more memory for something. the lower memory cards are actually harder to find because the most common use for sd is for digital pictures 1gig or more are popular for them
as for brand i don't know, it probably doesn't matter for the most part. i got pny cards

hope this helps. oh and if you shop on ebay you can find good deals on lots of sd cards...

I bought a Crucial 512MB Secure Digital Card for $12.99 from Tiger Direct yesterday. With shipping it came to almost $21.00.

I think Tiger Direct had an SD card that was 256MB of RAM but I wasn't familiar with that brand so I didn't purchase it, besides it was only $3.00 cheaper.

I didn't see any SD cards on the Tiger Direct site that were under 256MB.

Just to date my current stock of SD cards, I dug through them yesterday and as it turned out I only had two. One 2MB card (Bought new) which isn't working anymore and an 8MB card (Also bought new) that I have in my 0.8 mega pixel camera. Pretty funny how quickly I out grew those cards.

Check online at Frys.com or Microcenter.com Today's ad from Fry's had 2GB SD cards for $12.99, and 1GB for $3.00!!! (after mail-in rebate :() but still a good deal. Microcenter always has 1&2GB SD cards for $10-15. But be sure to check the brands. (I think the Fry's were Patriot brand).

I know others have had good luck on eBay, but you never know what you'll get that way!

Okay, have the SD Card and the Read/Writer........................now what?

Ugobe is supposed to release a surprise update for Pleo on December 15, 2007?

I am not a programmer, so I need help with what to do next and how to use the Reader/Writer, hopefully there will be tips from our Host.

Hey guys - here's what you need to have ready:

- an SD card reader/writer
- a blank SD card that is less than 1GB in capacity. (There is NO NEED for a large SD card - the Pleo behaviors we are working on aren’t even 1 MB...and large cards don’t operate as well in Pleo.) A little 32 MB card is totally fine and what we use around here ourselves!

ugobeSarah
12-14-2007, 12:09 PM
also, you don't have to have registered a pleo - you just have to be registered in the pleoworld community and logged in. so even if you don't have a pleo you can get the download, although i am not sure why that would be fun?! unless of course your dog has an sd card slot?

My dog and cat do not have card slots.

I wonder though. I have a Exacto knife and some electronic skills. I bet I could hack a card slot into my cat without too much trouble. I'm sure that if I did, I'd manage to modify my cat's behavior with your software.

Alternately, I suppose I could get incredibly lucky and find a Pleo waiting for me at home tonight, but that sounds doubtful at this point.

I've asked this before in other threads, but is there a size and speed limitation or requirement for pleo-compatible SD cards? The reason I am asking is because I am presuming that eventually pleo will be able to playback sound files saved onto the SD cards, and I am wondering if there would be a limitation to the size of those sound files (and therefore the size of card the sound files reside on). If it will be possible for pleo to playback high quality sound files saved onto an SD card, then I would want to get a large (1GB or larger) SD card, but if not, then I'd rather not spend the extra money and just get a 256MB or smaller card.

I got a 1GB SD card at Staples. They also had a 15-in-1 card reader/writer for $19.90...it was very easy to install. Now all I need is my Pleo which I am told, will be here in 3-5 business days.woooohoooo!!

Ah yes I read that. But do they mean that even 256 or 512 is "too large" for pleo? Or just cards over 1GB? I am having a hard time finding cards under 256MB.

Here's another question about the SD cards:

Do you need a separate card for each new download if you want your Pleo to do all the new UGOBE tricks?

I'm also eagerly waiting to find out if camera SD cards work for Pleo downloads. I have a 32 MB.

Thanks for all the help.

Good question Mary Jo. From what I hear of the Surprise Mode, it changes his personality, taking out the card reverts back to normal. So what if we put in a SD card that had several different downloads on it. How would that work out.

And I can't wait to see Pleo with Surprise Mode :D

Welp, I tried using an old 128mb SD card for a camera I use and it works fine.
The problem with camera SD cards is that they're automatically given files/folders on the cards to work for whatever particular camera you put them in (from the firmware on the camera). So, no matter what you do you'll end up with an SD card with a file and a folder on it.

Nevertheless, there's nothing stopping you from using your digital camera as an SD card/reader writer, just be aware that you'll have more then the Pleo file on there when you copy it over. Regardless, as I said... it seems to work fine. You'd think Ugobe would be smart enough to have Pleo only recognize Pleo files on an SD card, so I wouldnt be too concerned about it as in reality Pleo should just ignore the files it cant read and simply load the one it can. (that's just smart coding)

Soooo.. save yourself some money and just use your digital camera SD cards and use your digital camera as the card reader/writer. No sense in buying a redundant piece of hardware most of us already have (just about every digital component these days has a reader/writer in it).

If this is somehow detrimental to my Pleo, I hope a Developer will chime in. But, honestly it really shouldnt matter.

Enjoy!

(cackle) I might have just saved a lot of people about $30... merry x-mas

I used a 64 meg (US Modular $10 from Tiger Direct) SD card for the Xmas download and it worked fine. You don't need much memory size and the 32, 64 or 128 meg sizes are old technology and can be found cheap on ebay. The reader/writer can be found at Radio Shack. The xmas download was only 819K. Wait til they give us a program thats 10 megs long! Pleo will be smarter than a fifth grader!

Here goes guys :)

Download the 'Pleo Updates' and keep them in a special folder on your laptop/PC and when you want to use any particular update/updates just drag them onto the SD card.

When you are finished using any particular update/updates just delete them from the card and drag them back on whenever it suits you.

Im guessing a lot of future updates will be something we will want as perminent updates.

BRIAN you can get a 32mb SD card on Ebay for 50p

I bought a SansDisk 1GB SD Card for $9.00 and a DIGITAL CONCEPTS SD/MMC Read/Writer for $19.00 from Radio Shack (a.k.a. "The Rat Shack" in some parts of the country).

I bought my SD card and SD card reader/writer today. I asked the assistant to reccomend an SD card and an SD card reader/writer for me. They reccomended a 1GB SANDISK SD card and a USB mobile card reader/writer. If you're not sure just ask the assistants as they'll be happy to help you.

Yeah, it's kinda funny the responses I've had when I go in to a store to buy an SD card. Outright laughter in one place - of COURSE 32MB SD cards are no longer available at big box stores. So I got a 512MB card (brand PNY) that works fine. Luckily my notebook and my DH's PC has card slots, so I didn't need a separate reader. My DH bought me a couple of more 512MB cards for future use.

I got the Pleo for my 6 year old daughter as a Christmas present. After a couple of charges, she is really starting to enjoy playing with her Pleo. I was surprised to discover that the manufacturer recommends a 32 MB or 64 MB SD card at a maximum, and in fact seems to recommend against going much higher. Of course, no brick and mortart stores carry anything lower than about 256 MB today. After spending an hour or so rummaging around in a spare electronics bin today and coming up empty, and then running out to a few electronics/ toy stores, the only viable option for such a small SD card is to order it. While I appreciate the link provided, I will have to order this card and either pay $7-$25 to expedite shipping, or wait for 1-2 weeks so that I can upload the holiday feature- of course too late for the holidays! Very chintzy of the manufacturer to fail to supply a $5 (retail) SD card with their $ 360+ toy. This is very disappointing, the manufacturer should have yaken care of this!

Hello.. to all !! WOW what pleasure a little thing can bring, I got my pleo for xmas following much bribery to my partner, who couldn't see the value in it- but how he has changed his mind!!! I have to add in though although I am very happy to have my pleo, which are very very difficult to get hold of in the UK I must add. I am disappointed, in agreement with a few others that for the cost, the inclusion of the SD card should of been a given..I don't even know where i would get one with so little memory!?* J x

I bought a 1 GB SANDISK SD card for use in pleo and it works fine. I was only able to buy a 1 GB SD card at my local electronics store as they had nothing with a smaller capacity. I also agree with you that it would have been better to include the 32mb SD card in the box with pleo as i live in the UK and 32mb SD cards are very hard to come by as they are seen as 'old technology'.

I agree that a 32MB (or similar size) card should have been included.
That said, I have used a 1GB Sandisk, a 1GB PNY and a 2GB Kingston in my Pleo. All have worked with no issues.
For the video in my blog where Pleo is in Holiday Pleo mode there is a 1GB PNY SD card with the downloaded file on it.
I believe the biggest reason for the suggested small SD card memory is speed, not compatibility. The lower the MB on the card, the quicker Pleo will access the data.

I used a 2 gig SanDisk sold for the Wii (very high-speed) and that puppy worked like a charm. I didn't notice any issues of slowness or hangups.

In response to the micro, mini or normal, as long as you have the adaptor, you can use the mini SD's just like a normal one. I've used the Mini SD from my cellphone a few times before I purchased the one for my Wii and camera.. :o

While I agree that the card could have been included in the price, SD cards are everywhere these days. I just pulled one out of my digital camera and used it and it worked like a charm.

With all of the digital cameras out there, I'm surprised Pleo owners wouldn't have an abundance of these cards around.

that's odd that a 512MB pny sd card works for you. :confused:i've had issues with my 256MB pnys. i went to the link provided on downloads page and ordered 4 32MB cards. these should work considering ugobe recommends 'em. i really need to run my pleoskit "the pleonator"!! i'm also really looking forward to trying the babe01 personality by pleopet. :D

Hi becky941,

If you're talking about the Holiday downloand please be sure that the file name on the sd card is: pleo.urf

If this is correct then turn Pleo off, insert the SD card and then turn Pleo back on. Tap or pet Pleo on his rump and it should start the holiday program.

It has to be named pleo.urf in order to work.
And it has to be placed at the top level of the SD card.

I have a 1 GB SanDisk Ultra II and it's worked fine - I tried both the company behaviors without any difficulty.

You don't need to make any folders! The file goes right at the top level (root, drive letter, etc) of the SD card.

I just got "GUM-ROW" last week. He's the bomb!

I also just picked up a new SD 1gig card. BB only had the phone, TINY, cards with the adapters included. So I got one and dl'ed the santa file.

I tried it yesterday. In stalled the card in GUM-ROW and turned him on. I see no difference. Is there a trick to get the file to run? What am I missing? Maybe this new card, microSD with adapter to SD size, will not work?

Any help would greatly be appreciated!

The microSD should not be a problem. First off, make sure the file is named "pleo.urf" and that you put the file in the root directory (top level) of the card.

I'm sure my files are NOT named correctly. I just checked the dl site and I see they are named more than what show.

I will rename tonight...likely it will work.

THANKS FOR THE HELP! I will advise once I try GUM-ROW tonight.

Is it a reader only, or can you use the USB cable to load the behaviors to the SD card? It seems like this should be possible, but I don't see it addressed anywhere else.

Thanks in advance for your input!

Hi rotielover,

I don't think it will work but I'll see what I can find out. :)

Hence my name!

The other day I finally got a SD card to try in Bentley, the problem is I really don't know how I should put files into the card to let Bentley use the sound files.

Do I NEED to use MySkit or can I just drag and drop sound waves?

I DO have MySkit downloaded but it seems so complicated to me for example: I want to use a Jurassic Park sound clip just for fun but do I really need to match the sound file up with a series of motions I need to make for it? In other words, make a skit?

I hope I don't :< again, that program confuses me alittle.

Well, thanks for your time and answers if anyone replies to this! Have fun with your Pleos!

I am sooo confused about the SD Card! First off, I don't have one so do I need to buy one? Does Pleo come with it or something? What is it for? Sorry...I'm just so lost about this! :o:confused:

Pleo does not need an SD card for normal use.

Pleo does not need an SD card for updating the on-board software, however this can be done via SD card much faster than using the USB cable.

Pleo does need an SD card if you wish to use Pleo to perform skits.

I hope this helps you out!

Yours, degers

When you buy an sd card the prices very so much. So far the best price for me has been Radio Shack. I bought the first one from a camera shop and it ran about $30. I didn't know any better. Someone posted a long time ago about the price variation.
At that time Radio shack had them on sale for $10. When they are not on sale they run about $14. I like having the sd cards with me incase I want to show someone a skit. The Holiday Pleo is adorable and so is the Love Struck Pleo.:)

Yes, I will second the idea of checking your local Radio Shack. I got several 256MB cards, which are more than big enough, for 9.95 each. I use one for the LifeOS updates, and the others for skits or special UGOBE behaviors. By no means do you have to have one on Saturday when you open Pleo up :)

How difficult it will be to have the electronics work with a Bluetooth SD card for remote control, remote live data feed and OS updates?

PleoPet
05-14-2008, 09:19 AM
Several issues.

First, Bluetooth SD cards use "SDIO" which isn't supported by PLEO.
(related discussion here http://forums.pleoworld.com/showpost.php?p=10337&postcount=4 -- in context of WiFi instead of Bluetooth -- there is no Eye-Fi equivalent)

Bluetooth can be used for serial data, remote control and (slow) remote data feed. You hook into the serial port connector on the bottom of the Pleo, and wire it to a "BlueSMIRF" module. On the PC side, you need a USB Bluetooth 'dongle'.
An "XBee" module can be used as well (I prefer XBee)
http://www.aibohack.com/pleo/rf_pleo.htm

This can't be used for OS updates. The updates are infrequent enough that using a regular SD card is not a hassle.

Which way is up when loading the SD card into the Pleo?

Which way does the SD card go in to be read by the Pleo?
Any Mac users out there?? Would like to see if you would like extra skits?
:):)I got my answer it goes in with the contacts on the card facing down cut corner in the upper right corner.
The card slot should have the black button below. Place card in and push a bit until it clicks in.
The one I was using Believe it or not the chip was bad for the file we need for the Pleo only good for photos???
I tried another chip and it did the job my Pleo has the Lover, Watchdog and Holiday modes ready to add to his personality now!
Thanks for the help.
So my next thing will be to get skits made I have a G5 Mac so I might have to get a friend to work on this with me that has a PC!
Thanks again for your help.

What Cami said, plus the card will only go in one way. If it seems not to fit, don't force it, just flip it around.

It is recommended that you only have one behavior on a card at a time. You can however keep multiple behaviors on your computer and change them on the SD card. :-)

i've looked, it's impossible to find a 32mb SD card. i only found one that was 512mb. it was the only one. everything else is 1gb and up. and since it looks like i need multiple cards for multiple behaviors, i don't want to go buy a bunch of 1gb cards, does anyone out there know where to get a 32mb card(besides the free one that came with your digital camera) Ugobe has made great breakthroughs, BUT, if i can get a free 32mb card with my camera, why can't i get a free 32mb card with my camerasaurus?(i'm really sorry, i couldn't resist the pun) again, no disrespect to Ugobe, keep up the good work

I use 1GB cards. I have found them on sale for as cheap as $5.99 each. It's way overkill, but you're right, you cant find 32MB, 64Mb, or even 128MB anymore.

i bought my 32mb cards here:

they work perfectly and it's not overkill. ugobe actually provided a link to it originaly, i don't know if they do anymore.

wow. you can actually buy 32mb cards!?!?! i don't know what i'm gonna do now, i don't want to whine but, $4.35 for 32mb and $5.99 for 1gb i might as well just buy a bunch of 1gb cards. thanks for the site though ryane, at least i know they exist(i was informed otherwise). by the way, i love the bot in your pic, it's crazy!

Welcome lalaloco!

Yes you will need to buy the SD card seperate to play skits on, however if you want to update to the newer operating system then you can uplod that with the cable that should have come with your Pleo :)
