View Full Version : Should we have local gatherings?

Now that people are getting their pleos and starting to register, the old concept of "finding others in your area" is starting to become a real possibility.

The question is:  Why?

I'm not saying we shouldn't. In fact I would like to. What I would like to know is really more of "Is there really a need or reason for people with pleos to get together physically? And, if folks got together, what would they do?"

I familiar with the "computer/programing User Group" type of organizations where people get together to swap code and discuss programming ideas/tip/tricks. We do that now right here in the forums. There is the "social club" type groups that use a common interest as an excuse to gather, eat/drink/socialize, and build relationships. Obviously we can't do that on the forums, and the break room at Ugobe's office won't hold all of us. And then there are the "hobby clubs" (like for R/C or ham radio) where people get together to show off their stuff, have competitions, sell/swap/trade equipment, or just play together. Also hard to do here on the forums.

Looking at the people who have registered, the vast majority (over 90% in my area) opted NOT to be contacted, and an even larger percentage didn't list any location information at all. So, if a large metropolitan area has hundreds of pleo owners, and only a dozen or so want to get together, does it make sense to spend the time trying to organize something? And, again, what do you organize?

How far would you be willing to drive to meet with others?

Do you care enough to be willing to help organize in your area?

Please, post your opinions and suggestions!

For a Pleo Playdate of course! I think a good reason is to make new friends. Pleo could bring people together with the same interests, Pleo, robots, toys, computers, programmings, etc. I would love to meet fellow Pleo owners myself.

Well, we've seen in some of the videos a whole group of pleos toddling about amongst each other. Can a whole group of pleos communicate with each other through their infared sensors? (my two pleos copy each other if they are able to sense each other through their sensors, would this be true for a whole group of pleos? Would a group of pleos be able to "teach" each other their own individual tricks they might have acquired? Perhaps in the future it might be possible to program syncronous movement amongst a group of pleos? Perhaps pleo soccer matches?
The main issue I could foresee with gathering a whole bunch of pleos together is how would you be able to tell which one was yours at the end of the session unless they each had their own nametags or individual markings???

Well, name tags are good, but also remember, each Pleo has its own serial number on the bottom of their foot. So the best bet would be to carry your Pleo card with you when you go to a Pleo get together, that way if you forget or don't use a collar with a tag, you still have the best way to identify your own Pleo. No two Pleos have the same code.

Back in the mid 80s I belonged to a Tandy Color Computer club.

This was before the Internet made mass communication of ideas common though.

Gatherings of this sort still may prove to be a lot of fun for Pleo owners and may well prove worth it.

If we had a Pleo club in my town I'd be inclined to join in.

Yeah. I like the idea. Sharing knowledge with other pleo owners would be cool. Also making new friends.

I would like this "pleoworld member gathering" also, but it is eaisier to talk to people on the internet, cause when your talking to people in person , you somtimes dont know what to say, and go into long silences, but I still think its a good idea:)

I think a Pleo convention would be awesome. People could sell jewelry, collars, and clothes for Pleos. As well as other accessories and toys. There could be workshops on programming Pleo. Contests for Pleos, Best Dressed, Best Trick, etc.

Well Ugobe posted an official statement in the Events section about how they plan to do something eventually and that they rather us not make official plans for our own sponsored event on the forum. Likely do to liability reasons. If someone is hurt at a convention, they don't want to get the finger pointed at them. Which is wise.

If they sponsor their own convention, I will do my best to get there

If Ugobe sponsors their own, it could make them quite a bit of money, by charging for booth space to vendors.

Also, if Ugobe wanted to, they could likely set up booths at the unlimited amount of entertainment conventions. I could see it doing well at Dragon Con, Mega Con, Comic Con, etc. People (including me), go to these conventions with $100s-$1000s ready to spend on frivolous stupid things like statues, comics, etc. I could see people dumping $350 on an impulse buy when they see Pleo. People bring big money into those conventions. Some of the stuff people buy, its like WTH? $2000 for a light saber? Albeit, a very cool light saber, but what the heck are ya gonna do with it? Who wants to swing that around and risk breaking it? At least Pleo is more interactive :P

LOL, thanks

Ugobe could hire local Pleo owners as sales people :D I would certainly help in a Pleo booth at a local convention :D
