Pleoguy101 UGOBE took a lot of care to maintain the illusion of a living creature, I am sure the quietest gears and servos possible are being used. :-)

Pleo *is* a robot. You won't get away from that, entirely. Just think of the robot sounds you do hear, as him "purring" and learn to "enjoy" it. After a while, when you see the cute things he does, you'll tune out the mechanical sounds, anyway. Then he'll just become your little buddy.
While you are waiting to adjust to him being mechanical, just keep telling yourself that Pleo isn't a biological life form, he is a *robotic* life form. And all robots make little noises when they move around. It's just who they are.
Look at it this way: Cats, who move soundlessly, think YOU make too much noise when you move. LOL
They still love humans, though .... ;)

I'm glad the pleo will make some noise. Don't want him sneaking up and biting my ankles. My cats are so quite that they have a bad habit of sneaking up and swatting my legs. Sneak attack.

I'm sure as you grow older, you'll start to hear your joints making noise when you walk ;)

I hope he isn't as loud as iCybie was. That was a real disappointment.

I'm expecting something along the lines of AIBO, or maybe a little quieter. I don't think it will be like iCybie. Even the fact that skin covers the moving parts will muffle the sound a little bit, I would think.
I guess, personally, I always prepare myself to deal with all eventualities -- but after that, I put off worrying about things I can't change .... life is too short.

Does anybody know what pleo's sensors are made of? They seem to be extremely sensitive!
Here's a test: Hold two or three fingers about a centimeter above pleo's skin where the dots are on this image. Does your pleo react?

Dear PleoWorld Members,
I know that Pleo's Touch Sensors are REALLY sensitive, but I wanted to know that if Pleo will only react to a person's touch, not an object.
(For Example: If one of Pleo's back sensors rubs or scrapes against a box, will Pleo react to it the same way a person touches one of its touch sensor or is his touch sensor only designed to detect and react to human touch?)
I was hoping that it'd only respond to human touch, because if you dressed it up, the clothes or capes touching Pleo's sensitive sensors will make Pleo react to it as though it were being petted by a human, which may make it seem less realistic and have a weird behavior.
Thanks,
Lu Bu

When Amjoie put the royal robes on her two pleos it didn't seem to cause a problem. Check her blog out.

I'm not sure though, but I think you are right. Pleo has capacitive sensors that only detect the electrical coupling with water, which is inside our bodies. I am not sure if I am right though, but due to my knowledge of touch sensors, that is what capacitive touch sensors are. If I am wrong, please correct me.

When I put clothes on my cat it thinks it is a person petting him and he rolls around on the floor and purrs! So, I wondered that same question about Pleo.

When I put clothes on my cat he went all Cujo on me and ripped my left arm off and ate my spleen. Dang, cat's are sensitive when it comes to what they like or don't like to wear. :)

Ate your spleen? You wouldn't happen to be related to Winky from "Brewster Rockit" would you?

I have no idea who that is or what show that is. I don't have kids so I assume that's why.
My cat learned from my wife's old cat years ago that eating a person's spleen was a sure way to get what he wants.
I've since had to clone my own spleens and keep a few spleens handy for when I do something wrong. To make things easier I've had a Velcro strap installed so no more trips to the ER. I've asked my cat to use the Velcro opening to remove my spleen and sometimes he remembers to.
My wife and her old cat have both passed away, but the traditional eating of the spleen lives on.
To be fair, my cat is and always has been a sweet heart. I have never in my life seen a cat as easy going, and affectionate as this cat is. My cat is 12 years old and as I type this is sitting next to me pawing at my arm to get some attention.

Maybe that sweet heart of a cat is really pawing at your arm to get at your spleen.

He is cat, so it is possible. Strangely enough though, he's (Gustakitty) never tried to kill me in my sleep to take my spleen, at least not as far as I'm aware.

With a name like "Gustakitty," he does sound like all cat. We keep a few parrots around, and dogs here, so no cats. The African Grey does meow and say "here kitty, kitty." I suppose that might be confusing to a real feline.

I call Gustakitty Gus for short.
I had a Cockateil who used to call "kitty kitty kitty", he was great, died of old age about seven years ago.
I have a neighbor with an African Grey. I've wanted an African Grey but they're pretty expensive. I had a Conour up until a year ago. He was at least 20 years old when he died. He belongs to friends of mine i the mid 80s, I'd had him for about ten years.
Perhaps I should try to get a Norwegian Blue? :)

I just tried it with my Pleo... He only reacts on Human touch, when I touch him with a plastic pen he does not react.

I dunno if anybody's said this before, But I'll say it too.
I can't help but notice that when i pick Fern up, she doesn't react; she just acts like she's standing on the ground, or like she is looking over an edge, and tries to walk in my hands.
Isn't Pleo supposed to react to being picked up? Fern doesn't react until she is tilted, which I wonder about... ?

hmmmm.. you mean she doesn't react when you put her sideways on the floor?? thats odd. but about picking Fern up.. Rocky has done this once.. but realized he was picked up.. does Fern do this often??
Pleona

She will react if she is tilted; Like held at an angle or put sideways on the floor.
But if I just pick her up normally, She doesn't react, and acts the same way she does when she is standing on the ground...

Hi Pleona
Think it would be far fetched to assume it is part of the character, my Pleo starts screaming and moves in panic when I pick it up so would almost start to think there is something wrong with the feet sensors of your Pleo.

It's normal. That's the way Pleo is supposed to react.

Intersting Pleona. From the very begining when I pick up my Pleo right after he has recharged I purposely stimulate all four of the touch sensors on the bottom of his feet before I do anything else. He comes to life a happy little camper.
Sometimes I pick him up by the belly with one hand and he hangs there kind of limp until I stimulate a touch sensor. But usually when I pick him up it is because he has walked into something and then goes to sleep or he has just gone to sleep in the middle of a room somewhere.
I think the key is to always touch one on the senors to keep him stimulated and moving. He has never tried to walk in my hands. I am trying to get him to stand on only two legs. He is slowly getting better at it.

I've read elsewhere that the sensors are capacitance type. ie, they will react to changes in electric and magnetic fields. The sensors actually have their own electric field, which is changed when living tissue comes near. A plastic pen doesn't have its own field.

Peeky screams quite often when I pick him up. He just doesn't like it. :D
