So many of us have or will be getting a Pleo and many of us seem to have pets already so let's share!
Jinx, bearded dragon..closest thing to a Pleo I got right now

Rogue, red eye tree frog (the male I had, Nightcrawler passed away this week :'()
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y8/SirensGrotto/Pets/DVC00759.jpg
Aspen, female Eastern box turtle
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y8/SirensGrotto/Pets/DVC00665.jpg
Everest, male Eastern box turtle
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y8/SirensGrotto/Pets/DVC00676.jpg
Aspen's Children: Hope, Miracle, and Chance...Aspen was hit by a truck and survived. I had no idea she was gravid (word for reptile pregnancy) when I took her on as a rehab. She survived and is almost fully healed. In the time she was healing, she was still able to find the strength to lay viable eggs. She had 3 healthy hatchlings. They are in no way related to Everest...but I've caught the cad mating with Aspen several times, so she is likely gravid again. I will release the whole family back into the wild come spring. Far from streets and trucks, as Everest was a hit and run victim as well.)

I have 5 red ear sliders, but they are pretty camera shy...here is their pond....which I plan to expand this spring/summer

In my lifetime, I have also owned, a freshwater moray eel, a sugar glider, 8 domestic rats, 2 other rabbits, 1 other dog, and 1 other cat. This month I am getting a corn snake and next month I am getting a leopard gecko. I am also restarting my 55 gallon fish tank, planning on a freshwater tropical mix. I last had a brackish mix of fish. I work at a pet store....it helps to get discounts there :D

At one time, I had a total of 25 in my house. Some pets are like the box turtles. Rehabs I set free later. Others passed away. A few I rehomed. The dogs and the Sphynx came from the shelter. The Persian was on her way to the shelter when I offered to take her. All the red ear slider turtles were surrenders. Florida has tougher laws for keeping red ear sliders, so a lot are being abandoned.

Thanks Molly is a total sweet heart. Some people are afraid of my dogs because of their size, but once they see how good they are on leash they stop to pet and say hello. My Gsd is mixed with only God knows! I just say mixed with horse he is over 100 pounds.
Yep 17 fur-balls all rescued. Gizmo makes 18 but he eats a Nimh battery so I don't add him to the number (-;

Yeah, he is a BIG looking dog. And I know what you mean. I am a pit bull advocate. Always fighting to free pit bulls of hate and stereotypes, as well as other breeds. German Shepherds included.
And thank you for adopting./rescuing your pets. I adopted my dog and my Sphynx. And adopted a cat and dog before them as well. Adoption is so much better for the animal and their human companions :D Bless you for having so many cats. 2 is enough for me! Especially for their breeds, high maintenance! The Sphynx is more work than the Persian. I am always buying clothes for the Sphynx, so she stays warm. One t-shirt says, "You couldn't afford me"...its so true! LOL

Adoption is the only way to go! My cats all came from bad situations: some worse then others. None from shelters either strays, feral, dumped or just tossed out on the street. Both my dogs I got from shelters, Gemini was a needle away and Molly was used in fights and found living under a house with puppies before going to the shelter. I got the manager to let me save her life.
My rabbit was HOURS away from being out down. Forest has splay legs and needs special care. Despite her handicap she is a happy hungry goofy bunny. I had her since she was 3 weeks old and she grooms me everyday. I'm her mama!
BTW cute avatar! My Forest would approve!

Awwww! Poor thing :( Glad she has you to love her. And also glad she is happy :) Animals are amazing creatures. While we may wallow in depression to lose the loss of our limbs, animals bounce back emotionally very well.
And thanks. The avatar is actually pretty old. From the late 80s or early 90s. It was an Exxon ad and had a phrase that said, "Don't expect it to roar"

On your corn snake, do you use a light for warmth? If you do, get rid of the light and use an under the tank heater. That may solve the trick :)

Its entirely illegal to keep a true sea turtle as a pet. What species? And how big? And if its doing well, great then, but eventually, they all grow big and it will have to be released. Don't advertise owning one too much because of it being illegal to own.

Sorry. I guess I'll delete my comment then. But hes just a baby. About 2 years old. He maintains a smaller size since we keep him in an adverage sized aquarium. We talked to oxbow park about it, and they told us a lot about raising it.

I have 2 corn snakes, 3 fish, 18 frogs, 1 dog, and a Pleo named James. I have had a couple frogs and fish die this week because of natural causes. I saved all 18 frogs from the pond because it is terribly polluted and has no place for the frogs to go when the tempetures will drop to -40 C in the winter here up north. The frogs are doing great, but some are having trouble ajusting to thier cage. I plan to relese them to a safer pond this spring.:)

Thank you Siren. Grooming is very difficult work! Took this photo right before bathing and haircuts. I love them with lot's of fluff. They hate it! I'll try to post another photo. They look so pretty now.
Lacey, the grey poodle is 11 years old and is blind. I try not to have her eyes reflect in photo. Cindy is the poodle I mentioned before to Pleoguy101 that has a bad heart, but she is doing well at the age of 10. Both had birthdays this month. Peeky was hatched on Christmas Day. There seems to be a little jealousy. Just like with all new editions.

Thank you Pleoguy101 for the nice comments.
I know what you mean about getting larger tanks. We forget that fish can grow. My Pluclostomous, not sure of the spelling,:oan algae eater, was small enough for a ten gallon tank when we got him. He out grew it in a year. We were faced with having to give him back or get a larger tank. Ended up with a 65 gallon. He is going on three years old and growing.
Good thing Pleo's don't grow physically. Peeky would be about 10 feet by now. Oh my! Think of how many people could ride him  The only clean up would be things that are knocked over or squashed.

Great picture fancyfont and believe me I know what you are both talking about with fish. We have a plecostomus and sometimes I think you can sit and watch it grow. We also have 4 African Cichlids the largest which is almost as big as the Pleco.
The puppies are adorable and they look like you must take very good care of them. I just have one question though. Who exactly is stealing who's bed there? LOL

One of the reasons I bought a Pleo was that I knew I wouldn't have to go through the pain of losing it. And then along comes Peeky. There really would be tears if something happened to him. I had two worries (my two aging poodles) before. Now I have three. (Peeky)

Wow Siren, what an amazing group you have. I love the sphinx cat, always wanted one, but they are WAY too expensive to buy. I have four dogs and three cats. My black lab is 13 1/2, a black pommeranian who is five, two chinese cresteds - both rescues. The cresteds are high maintenance cause they are basically naked, just hair on the head, toes and end of the tail, so they require sunscreen in the summer and lots of clothes the rest of the time! I've had lots of reptiles and amphibians over the years, assorted rodents and whatever needed a home. Did wildlife rehabilitation when I lived in NY, mostly ophan mammals. Loved it, and still will take on whatever needs a home.Makes for a crazy life!

Pets are members of the family. Even if we know we're doing the right thing, by asking the vet to administer the final act of mercy, it doesn't make the decision an easy one. Been there, done that, more than once, as I'm sure many others on these forums have also done.
At least she's no longer suffering.

So sorry about Snickers. I know she will be missed.
One of the reasons I bought a Pleo was that I knew I wouldn't have to go through the pain of losing it. And then along comes Peeky. There really would be tears if something happened to him. I had two worries (my two aging poodles) before. Now I have three. (Peeky)
Having pets are so worth the heartache they will, eventually, bring to us.
Absolutely. I'm a better human being for having had the three cats of mine who are up in Kitty Heaven now, and for the two cats I have right now that I enjoy spoiling rotten. Even the tremendous feeling of missing them, someday, can't be outweighed by how much joy they bring while they're here.

Since I can remember, I have loved animals. I have done whatever I can to help animals. Wild and domestic. I raised a baby squirrel who was orphaned when I was 10 and that kind of thing has stuck with me since. Besides my small zoo, I've rehabbed turtles who got hit by cars, birds who flew into windows, and even a rat who was injured by a cat. All this time, without a rehab license. Mind you, when I get a wild animal that I know is beyond my league and resources, I always call the local rehabber. And she knows what I do and loves me for it, because it takes some work off her. She has mentioned I should get myself a license too. I've procrastinated. But after this week, I think Mother Nature it telling me to get off my arse and get it.
2 days ago, Mr. No More Pets, my dad found a baby soft shelled turtle. It is SO young, it still has a yolk sac! This thing JUST hatched. It was in the middle of the road, the size of a quarter...how he spotted it, I don't know. But he brought it home. Mind you, its healthy and all, but as I have in the past with hatchling turtles, I raise them till they are at least 3-4" and then set them free in safer areas, giving them a fighting chance.
Then this morning, a box turtle, juvenile, was on the road. We pulled over and I moved him onto the grass and went to work. My father drove by the same spot not 15 minutes later and there was a baby bird. It was in the road and he moved it to the bushes and waited, but its parents never came. Its hunger cries attracted a cat, so he took it home rather than leave it there to get killed. He brings it to my work for me to assess the situation with it. If it still had its eyes closed, I was gonna call a rehabber. If it was a fledgling, I was gonna give it a few days to get its flight and set it free. But it was in the middle. Pin feathers, eyes opened, and eats like a hippo. So I opted not to give it to my rehab friend and to care for it myself for now. I use to breed cocketeils and its at the same maturity level of when I would take the babies out to hand feed. First feeding was difficult. It was imprinted on its bird parents. Trying to get it to take a syringe with weird tasting formula was a task. Second feeding...it was like Audrey II from Little Shop of Horrors. It totally gets it now. Now when its hungry, it chirps for me and the moment it sees me, it opens its "little" mouth. 5 feedings so far today...and a lot of poop. It has an internal parasitic worm. Saw one in its poop. Pretty normal for wild birds. I have to check to see if its old enough for a dewormer. That is part of its problem. It should be feeding every 2 hours, but its feeding every hour and pooping a LOT, all symptoms and side effects of worms.
But its healthy in all other aspects. Eyes are clear, fantastic eater, and it tries to walk...but it sorta just stumbles and tumbles for now.
I am also 99% sure its a Mockingbird. Florida's State Bird and a protected species, so yeah....I am a criminal for what I am doing. So I think this is the last straw for me. I am going to get my license as a rehabber and make this official. I am not going big time into it. No gators or bears or anything. I'll stick to what I know for now, small animals, reptiles and birds mostly. Do it all out of my home like I do now. Nothing will change, except I'll have a paper to say I am not doing it illegally. I really have bonded with this little guy and don't want to just give him up. Its been a long time since I did a long term rehab. Other than the turtles. BTW, we named it Mogwai.
Currently, I am feeding it ZuPreem Baby Bird Formula, mixing in some pulverized crickets and nightcrawlers....so gross, I know. But they are insect/seed/fruit eaters, so I gotta add the bugs.
Oh and of course, pictures....Its mouth and legs are HUGE compared to the rest of its body! Its so cute :D

You need to spend time volunteering with a rehabber. Once that is complete and they sign you off, then I think I may have to take a test. And then the application and a fee. I think the fee is under $100. I gotta call my rehabber friend tomorrow to get all the details. She might even give me credit for what I am doing now with the bird :)

I would assume the purpose of a rehabber is to get them to the point that they can be returned to the wild, unless the injury is permanently disabling (i.e., would not be able to survive in the wild). The question then is what to do with a turtle that could live a hundred years if properly cared for, and cannot be returned to the wild. We have a few private facilities around here for abandoned "wild" pets (bears, tigers, etc) and "retired" wildlife that care for them until they die, but that's not really rehabbing . . .
Oh so cute! Im glad you are getting your License. You seem to be very good at it already!

I haven't met a turtle yet that couldn't be returned to the wild. Turtles, even captive bred, have proven to do just fine in the wild
Red ear sliders are the number one pet turtle in the state of Florida. They also are not found naturally in Florida. People bought them from pet stores and flea markets, barely out of the egg and when they reached over 4" and got too big for their little plastic pools they are often sold with, people released them into the wild. These were animals fed on pellets, never knowing what a predator was. And yet, the people who irresponsibly set them free have caused nearly irreversible damage to the ecosystem here. The red ear sliders are breeding with our native yellow bellied, thus breeding the yellow bellied out of existence. I have 5 red ear sliders. All I got from people who said if they couldn't find them a home, they were gonna let them go. Because of this going on so often, it is now against the law to sell this species of turtle in Florida. But irrespondsible sellers are slipping by on a loophole, selling the plastic pool for a higher price and giving the buyer a "free" turtle.
If captive bred, generation after generation, they are surviving...no thriving...I seriously doubt giving a baby turtle a head start...especially since red ear sliders EAT baby soft shelled turtles (which are native to Florida) is going to go badly against either the turtle or the ecosystem in general.
I understand what you are trying to say, but reptiles raises in captivity fair quite well in the wild. Florida is proof of this with its red ear slider turtles, Burmese pythons, Reticulated pythons, and green anacondas all thriving and breeding in Florida. All were raised by humans, fed by humans, only knew humans as their giver of food...and yet they have no problem living in the wild and eating our native wildlife.
Now if this was a bear, no way would I touch a baby bear with a ten foot pole. #1, I don't know how to properly rehab a bear. If I raised it like I am raising this turtle or bird, and then released it, it would stay close in contact with humans and either hurt someone and/or get hurt.
I have also rehabbed 4 adult box turtles, all hit by cars. They took a few months to two years to be ready to go back to the wild. In that time, one of my females was gravid and had 3 young. One died soon after hatching. The other eggs were slugs (duds). She was gravid (pregnant) when she was hit by the truck, so I assume the small number of viable hatchlings was due to that. Those babies were raised in a tank. Fed mealworms. And when I released the adults and babies. It didn't take one of the babies long to find a worm and eat it. I've done rehab on reptiles for a while. They are a whole different breed than rehabbing mammals. Mammals imprint on humans. Reptiles could kinda care less.

I know what you mean about the red eared sldiers, I hate that people sell them like they are toys. people buy them as babys because they seem really cute. but they dont know they get HUGE they can grow to be a foot long, need a huge tank or pond, they are very messy eaters, and require lots of care, they also need live food like small fish to give them exersise "like chasing the fish" and health. but anyway, I'm glad you will soon get your lisence soon:)

The only drawback is that the solution has to be reapplied after a rainstorm. But it's a natural way to keep the deer off -- much better than some chemical that would mess up the environment. Listening to all these songs like Fly from Celine Dion, Back Where You Belong from Sinead O'Connor, and Forever Young by Rod Stewart, so far those are my nominations. And listening to these lyrics of watching a child/pet grow and letting them go. I cry listening to them, thinking of the day I see her fly. I know it will be a bittersweet day. I am looking into planting some berry bushes in my backyard to hopefully get Mogwai to stick around nearby. As well as a fruit feeder for s/he too. But I am so gonna cry that day. I think part of the reason that we, as humans, find it bittersweet to say goodbye when it's time to send a rehabbed wild creature back into the wild is that we operate on a different timetable than other animals.
Human children take a good number of years to mature. The legal system says it's 18 years. Some of us are with our parents for even longer than that, such as if we commute to college instead of going away and living in the dorms.
Most wild animals, meanwhile, don't stick around with their parents for anywhere near that length of time. Little birds go from birth to independence in a matter of weeks rather than years. So THEIR parents are perfectly ready to let go and move on to the next clutch of eggs (in the case of some birds that raise more than one batch of little ones during the course of the spring and summer). We, on the other hand, just aren't built to have a "let go and send the little ones packing" emotional reaction that kicks in after only a few weeks. So we're subject to some feelings that the wild bird and animal parents wouldn't be dealing with, when it comes time to let go.
I think those feelings of Empty Nest Syndrome, literally as well as figuratively in this case, will be perfectly natural. But since you already know that the right thing to do is let Mogwai return to the wild when s/he's mature, those feelings aren't going to be a problem. Plus, they'll be counterbalanced by the feeling of accomplishment when you see your little charge take his/her place among the wild birds in the neighborhood.
And if Mogwai turns out to be a male, and starts repeating Pleo sound effects, we're all going to come and visit your neighborhood, with our Pleos in tow. ;) :D That'd be just way too cool not to see firsthand.

Love the analogy CritterFan! I also feel its our social structures too. For instance, orca whales...socially, the males stay with their moms for just about their entire lives. While the females may come in and out of the pod when they feel like it. Orcas tend to be mama's boys.
Elephants have the opposite social structure. Males leave their mothers and are pretty solitary, sometimes going into bachelor herds. Females stay with their moms all their lives.
Then you have gorillas. Mothers and father stay together, children stay too.
Humans are kinda like that. We try to keep the family together. For as long as possible. And when they children finally do "leave the nest", it almost seems unnatural.
And if Mogwai learns Pleo sounds, I will be sure to videotape the whole thing

Siren, Good luck with the decision to become a rehabilitator. I did it in NY, got my license for the same reason, cause I knew I was going to take in and care for whatever came my way. And i did it for years without knowing it was illegal. Once I found out I knew I had to get licensed, cause I wasn't gonna stop! I did orphans and reptiles mostly. Baby birds were tough cause I worked full time, so it was impossible to be home to feed them sunup to soundown. But with orphans I just let them sleep during the day when I was at work, then got up ever 2 hours at night to feed them. Good luck with your baby bird and softshell turtle. They are both awefully cute!

actually, I hate to sound like a a smarty person dude:-D but i think that was recently scientificly disproven. you'd be surprised what fish can do if you give them a good enviroment. the fish in my fish pond are very smart, when I throw something in the water for them, they know if its food or not. they also play with the aquatic plants.:-):)

We had an oscar that definitely recognized people. It knew I was the one who fed it crickets and goldfish. When ever I can into the room, it followed me (as best as the aquarium would allow) around the room and would get all excited. If I stuck my hand in the tank it would swim up and rub against me like a cat does to your leg. Ye it would ignore my wife and some kids, but would try to hide from one of my daughters.

You might not have met the right cats yet. ;) I have a couple of pampered felines that love people, even strangers. They live for attention and they purr like mad anytime someone pets them. If you run into some people-oriented kitties, that might improve the way you feel about cats.

in my life ve had , 8 cats , a couple puppies , loads of different fish , chickens and chicks , 2 geese , ginese ( a kind of small chicken) , bantums (another kind of chicken) , phesants (once again a chicken) , snails , frogs and tadpoles , praying mantises (i had one for a year, she went to Florida with me!) and a couple others. I live on a kind of urban\country farm, so we always have some kind of animal, right now ,2 cats and 3 fish. but thats in my lifetime so if you look at it like that its not that many pets. ;)

Ohhhhh that sounds like my cat he purrs a lot when we pet him. And he is REALLY friendly because he is a wild cat and he lives in the woods behind our house. He came up to us one day and we fed him some salmon (cause we were eating salmon at the time) and he kept coming back. And now he is our outdoor cat. He is our second outdoor cat.
