View Full Version : User levels for the fun of it

I normally don't like seeing post counts on message boards, because it promotes people with nothing better to do than spam the board with useless one word posts as replies or starting threads that have nothing to do with the subject at hand all to boost their "post counts."
It is a bit of fun that some boards use "ranks" or "levels" to denote how frequently a board user has contributed to the forum. These are in the form of a name related to the board topic, in this case Pleo, a dinosaur, that appears just below the username.
Examples:
hatchling - a board newbie
infant - a board member that has made 50 or more posts
juvenile - a board member that has made more than 100 posts
Of course there can be more similar "levels" and the numbers of posts required to attain a new level can be different.
It's just an idea that many boards tend to use as a bit of fun.

it's funny because all of the people who respond to this would be ranked juviniles

But in this case, the "juveniles" are the top 10%. We are all over 100 posts except Keith, while the average is way less than 20 posts.
But how is this idea and different than showing the numbers? An infant is just as likely to add useless posts just to get promoted to juvenile. Could you use length of membership? Allow forum members to rank each other's quality as to "good" posts vs. fluff?
I would like to see an earned ranking with something like:
hatchling -a board newbie
infant - verified to have read the basic FAQ & 25+ posts
juvenile - passed an online test of basic pleo knowledge, set up a plog, and 100+ posts
adult - etc.

that makes sence too!! i wouldnt want someone just to post for online grattitude/rankage if they dont really care about the actual thing..........

O.K., after wading through all the new posts, I came up with a few other suggestions (assuming the bulletin board software supports it and our hosts like our ideas...)
-- Weight posts differently based on the forum they are in (posts to the LifeOS forum threads carry more weight than posts to the Introduce Yourself threads)
-- Count threads started that have more than 20 responses (to weed out the pointless threads)

Hi Everyone,
I also think this is a very cool idea. Unfortunately the tools at this time cannot correlate anything like this and it would have to be done manually.
As you can all tell the forums have been extremely busy lately and will continue to get busier as each wave of Pleos hit their new homes.
Although it is not feasible at this time, I would like to continue to hear your ideas on the subject and perhaps we can consider something like this next year, after the majority of the first batch of Pleos have found their new homes. :D
