What do you want to see for a Pleo Commercial?
Why don't we share some script for a commercial, here?
I wish some great spot like the first Furby commercial, but instead of childs a family with their own Pleo walk and make funny noises in their home...

Ohhhh how fun junkroxy. How about a choir of Pleos singing while a hatchling first comes to life. I think that's my favorite part of the videos is watching Pleo come to life for the first time.

yes, it's nice, with a white background like the current video on the site! love it!

You know what would be an even better commercial would be to have a choir of Pleos singing while they watch a new friend hatch. Maybe it will be the polar bear, or elephant, or a turtle, or...a complete surprise. :)

As long as it's not like the Zwinky commercial or whatever that thing is, I really can't stand that commercial lol

Im sure it will be adorable whatever it is just because Pleo will be in it.

If they do commercials, can we have them posted in the forum? It would be nice to have them here, so that if someone misses a commercial, and a friend is telling them about it, they can come here to see it.

I like the idea for the white background commercials - in time they could become design icons like the first iPod commercials (which were awesome - way better than the iPhone ones).

I think the white background ad's on the site look kind of fake. I think the best video of pleo is at http://www.robotsrule.com/pleo/2007/04/i-met-pleo-part-i.html you get a very full idea of how big pleo actually is when you get him, the white background videos don't provide that perspective.

It wouldn't offer much size perspective, at first, but I've been thinking of a commercial that's all-black (not white), and only features Pleo moving, perhaps walking into, across, and out of the frame, with a background crescendo - maybe a combo of electronic and tradtional strings. The very first two commercials wouldn't have any voice-over, just that video followed by a simple logo card. The first commercial could come as 15- and 30-second spots, and be introduced very early (about six to eight weeks off). If it isn't quite enough, a "hatching soon" message could be displayed with or after the logo.

As Pleo's street date nears, add a "hatching on" date to the logo card for about two to three weeks, and maybe change the video just a little. Maybe this time Pleo walks from the background to the foreground, looking into the camera.

Then 10-14 days before the street date, add voice-overs and more video to offer more information about "just what is this thing I keep seeing on TV?!" (That's not the script, just what a lot of viewers will be wondering - many of them will already know, having seen plenty about it online and on TV.)

I think that considering Pleo's price, we want to appeal as much, or more, to parents as their kids (and of course, other target adults like me) with something a little classier than people playing with a toy, which is what everybody and their brother does with advertising anyway. We want Pleo to stand out, but not in an obnoxious way. He may be classifiable as a toy, but he's a very special toy.

Ugobe, feel free to use any of my ideas. ;)

How about something a bit old fashioned. Love, perhaps?
How about the girl . . . finding the package left by her lover . . . . opening it and watching (and hearing) PLEO come to life for the first time. The sounds that PLEO makes would tug at her heart strings.
Imagine the Lover leaving for business . . . and leaving his PLEO with her PLEO as a statement of love and his iminent return.
I like ActivityGrrrl's concept as well. Perhaps combine the ideas here. In the beginning - show only the box. The box being found by the girl. After a week she opens the box. By this time everyone will want to know what's in the box. Show the PLEO coming to life in a 3rd commercial. Etc., etc., etc.,
Pleo will appeal to all. So, the commercial should appeal to all. It should have mystery. It should have charisma. It should show the emotional side of owning a Pleo. And the potential relationships between multiple Pleos.
Follow-up commercials can show other sides of Pleo as well once the public has fallen for our little dino-guy.

Also, I think a good commercial would be where a Pleo walks up to a 3d animated big dinosaur, and the dinosaur roars at Pleo, but Pleo roars back and scares it off. Lol.

They should make Pleo a feature of the comic strip. He would look adorable sleeping up-side-down on the roof of a little mini-cave, next to Snoopy's dog house. ;) LOL

Hmmm. But that gives me an idea. What about a Pleo comic strip on the main website .... I bet blogs would pick it up, if they did that.

Great ideas. I think the first commercial should give a background story on pleo. Where did he come from? How he was discovered? The furbies had a background story. Then incorperate into the commercial how he/she can be part of our lives.

For those who do not live in Japan, or keep up with japanese cars, Subaru has marketed a compact car model called the Pleo (a revamp of the Subaru Justy). Well, I read the first line of some marketing material for the car and thought "This would sound just as good for our dinosaur..."

In a land where cute is king, and space is at a premium the Pleo makes sense.

The rest of the ad continued: "And if a regular Pleo is good, the performance Pleo RS must be better. The sportiest of the Pleos has a 1.3-liter inline three cylinder that makes 63 horsepower and 76 lb-ft of torque..."

Sounds rather impressive for our little robot pal, don't it?

Since I've been watching Pleo's progress for a year, my 9 yr old daughter is drooooling for one.
She watches the Pleo videos ALL THE TIME.
She's told her friends and they don't know what she's talking about... she'll show them the videos
and they're like "WOW! I want one too". They are already making plans to get their Pleos
together for "sleepovers" and "slumber parties", LOL

I'd like to see some commercials on Cartoon Network and other kid stations soon because
the masses still have no clue about Pleo.

I think a commercial about friends having their Pleos interact with eachother
and also showing eachother what THEIR Pleo can do versus what the others can do
would make a good commercial.

I pre-ordered 2 of them from Ugobe and I cannot WAIT!

I would like to see a comercial similar to this one on the net. it is a 3 mis long it its kind of a introduction!

my reasons why they UGOBE should this:

1. Music! Almost everyone loves music, because music goes inside your soul.
(hire a good compositor and intrumentals) you might a good one in california area. Maybe a student it is chepear with lots of creativity

2. Adding a person in the video, can be a cartton, or real person it will add that PLEO, can interact with humans.

3. Placing! another Pleo, means that pleo can interat with other pleos.

4. Adding the leaf makes people know that you can interact with him in other ways.

5. Cool sounds, diffent humans voices will make it cool, a woman voice, and male voice iti is important so people knows that it can be used for both sexes.

Hmmm Just for saying it, I think Pleo needs a comercial that gets attention, without being cheesy. Something that appeals to girls and boys, so no ballet or rock and roll music.

I think it should start out with a brother and a sister walking through a dinosur exibit. The boy says,
"Don't you think it'd be cool to have a real pet dinosaur?" The girl says,
"Yeah it would." Then they come to a Pleo exhibit and he begins to walk towards them.

*music starts to play, preferably best friend music*

Voice booms out of nowhere while the kids play with Pleo.
"Meet Pleo, an all new one of a kind friend. You can teach him tricks."

*shows Pleo doing the down dog trick and the boy says, "good boy Pleo" and pets him, the voice booms again. "He responds when you pet him." *shows Pleo be petted by the girl.* "Your so funny!"

The voice booms again. "But most of all, you can love him, he really loves you back." *shows Pleo and the boy and girl sitting together while Pleo nuzzles them.

Then to end it, it shows the boy, girl and Pleo running off and playing with each other, while the voice suddenly talks really fast.

"350$ shipping and handling, not to be used in water, not recommended for children under three. Not actual dinosaur.

I think it should sart out with parts of rochslers pleo video, whith the dramatic music and those little titles like "a spark of life" etc and in between calub chung is saying some stuff and pleo and then it should show the people walking down the street greeted by pleo, I personally like the clip where pleo nuzzles on the girls shoulders and she says

"aww look at that, hes soo cute" then it should show pretty much all the things that shows pleos good side, "wich is almost everything about him:)" and it should show part of the video on how to take out pleos battery, and it should end by calub saying , "I'm calub chung, and pleos on the move, then the ugobe logo etc.

The commercial needs to be able to be emailed too. I can't tell you how many times I've gotten or sent a really funny or neat commercial like the transformer ones for the citron - very cool

I agree that the "on the street" concept is a great sales method, so next month when we get all these pleos, Ugobe should set up some sort of referral program. We take our pleos with us, people see them, fall in love with pleo, rush out and get there own, and somehow mention us as the reason they bought, and we get credit with Ugobe towards buying accessories (like battery packs) or our next pleo! :D

Hi I'm new to this forum.

I preordered two pleos for my kids in early October through Amazon. As we get closer to its launch, I am very surprised we have not seen more videos or marketing from Ugobe about pleo. This makes me wonder just how good it will be. It would be easy to post new video clips of pleo every few days showing what it can do. I'm sure they have lots of video clips on hand. Doing so would create a lot more excitement for current and future pleo buyers. For such a groundbreaking product and its high price, I really expected to see new info weekly (if not daily) from Ugobe as the launch nears. I'm thinking of canceling one of the pleos before it ships until I can see what it can really do. I'm worried about ending up with two clone toys that do the exact same thing (this is my take from the current pleo videos).

I’m sure pleo will eventually be a fantastic product. I just don’t know if I want to drop $700 for the first version when it seems Ugobe is not into promoting pleo at this time.

Also, I hope they eventually offer new pleo skins in different colors. After looking at the green skin for the just two months, it already looks outdated to me.

One of the reasons Ugobe hasn't done a lot of publicizing is that due to delays they have had to cut production numbers for this year, and most sites are already sold out. Wouldn't do any good to widely promote a product you don't have enough of to meet current demand ;) That would just upset more people. But I'm sure you'll see a lot more marketing next year when the swing into full production. :)

mearts
11-28-2007, 07:35 PM
I’m excited about getting them for my kids. I’m sure it will eventually be a great product. I just would like to see the current version in action prior to purchasing two.

Mweed it appears that Pleo can still be purchased in time for Christmas (if needed) at many major websites such as Amazon, Sharper Image, Toyrus and others sites. I have not seen it sold out at any website I've visited. I think stores such as sharper image will have them at retail also. I do know that manufacturing in China is hit-or-miss and that ship dates can easily change.

i wouldn't worry about the marketing. guitar hero didn't have any marketing and now it's a cultural thing.

once people share pleo with their families over the holidays, everyone will be running out to get one.

Primus

The problem is that it took 3 iterations before Guitar Hero reached that level.

mearts
11-30-2007, 11:24 AM
I think walmart was shorted on inventory and/or was not happy about the delays and pulled pleo from its website. Out of stock items usually remain in their catalog search.

I'm sure pleo will eventually be a hit. I was mainly talking about the lack of marketing to the people who already purchased it. The anticipation is very high leading to its ship date but we get very little "new" info about the final product. Posting a short video clip a couple times a week of pleo doing something new would have been cool.

Pleo will never reach the success of Guitar Hero just because of its price. I can’t see too many 15-40 year old males buying a pleo to play with. I am sure GH would not have been a hit if you could only play it for 1 hour, then had to wait 4 hours before playing it again.

Yeah. The trickle of information coming out of Ugobe has been discouraging. I have to assume it's because so much was still in flux, they didn't want to be sending out information that might be wrong two weeks later because they had to change something. But more frequent updates and more of the videos would have been nice. :)

I get the feeling it's quiet because no one is doing anything except working like mad on the software download stuff so they can take care of everyone once they get their Pleos. Note, I have no other information than all of you, I"m just guessing. I've been in deadline crunches like that and frequently you don't get a whole lot of time for anything but work and frequently not much sleep either!

If anyone works for Domino's Pizza, a good way to test if I'm right is to see if Ugobe has been running up huge pizza delivery billls recently. :)

mweed
11-30-2007, 08:56 PM
Oh, yeah! I'm familiar with production deadlines! And if what we saw on the videos is right, it looks like Ugobe has a fairly limited staff, so I'm sure everybody has to work together. In large companies like I have worked for, a change in the hardware (like the battery) would not affect the software engineers. If anything, it would give them more time to get more features into the code. But in a small company I would guess everybody's has to work on one thing at a time.

The fact that they sent out emails on Thanksgiving is a good sign that they are putting in a lot of overtime! :)

Regardless of how wonderful Pleo is, if they don't sell it, they won't be able to keep manufacturing them. So this worries me a bit! I have a lot of amazing and wonderful robotic pets (aibo being the best example) which I was heartbroken to discover were discontinued due to lack of profitability. Will Pleo head the same route because of the delayed production and lack of advertising?

Does Ugobe have a comment on how the pre-orders are progressing, and sales in general, compared to what they expected? Is there a second Christmas in sight for Pleo? If a toy like the Wowee Robosapien (my hubby has one, it's all style and no substance) can be reincarnated for a second Christmas, I expect Pleo to survive that long. But the main difference I see is that the Robosapien was saturating the advertising market all through the holidays, and physically present in a lot of stores!

Wiith all the rough road behind him, it should be a BLOCKBUSTER Christmas of 2008.

Wiith all the rough road behind him, it should be a BLOCKBUSTER Christmas of 2008.

i totally agree with you that pleo should be a hit again next year. ugobe will be upgrading pleo's firmware for more learning capabilities and adding in new interesting behaviors. in short pleo is only going to get better unlike wowwee's toy robosapien.

i was upset about sony quiting on aibo. i don't think life forms will suffer the same fate though. ugobe is focused on this one vision. they aren't some big corporate company that dabbles in everything. pleo looks to be much more "alive" then aibo anyway(i have a 210), and more responsive. i think their future looks bright!

Well, as far as the marketing goes, the new pleos are apparently being shipped to reviewers, it appears PC Mag got theirs:

I just found this on the web--photos and a short story about a magazine writer who got his Pleo today.

Now I know why there was little new video of pleo. The motors and gears are VERY loud. I do like pleo's expressions and movements though. It's too bad there will always be a very obvious Hollywood mechanical robot sound whenever it moves. The loud mechanical sound when the tail moves is funny. It really reminds you that pleo is a robot. I know my boy will love the robot sound but I'm not sure my daughter will like it.

Yes, that LOUD motor sound is annoying and interferes with the illusion of life. I don't recall it being so loud in other videos I've seen.

Not sure but I may be having second thoughts now about buying although I still think Pleo is cute. :(

It's interesting that ugobe removed the motor/gear noises from the pleo video clip on their homepage. That's the clip I've watched the most so hearing what pleo really sounds like when moving was a real surprise. The homepage video is somewhat deceptive.

I am actually quite sad today. Dang. I should have known it might not measure up. The motors, the failure to evolve...crap.

I have suspected the gear were much louder then we were led to believe for a while now.

Here's another article on a press Pleo:

Nobody at the Maker Faire complained about the gear noise. Of course the faire was probably too noisy to hear the gears. But there have been several forum members here who have seen pleo in person, and no complaints were made. So I wonder if the prototypes are quieter, or the production models aren't as well made that the gear noise is louder?

I do know that my camcorder does tend to accentuate those quite noises we tend to not notice in real life. If you've ever watched a home movie you know what I mean. So, the videos we're seeing posted by the reviewers probably sound louder than they really are.

Even the PC mag guy said that the noise didn't keep the pleo from being adorable.

Not wanting to minimize the issue, but I guess we'll have to wait and see . . .

Adorable is all fine and good but my stuffed animals are adorable too, and yet ultimately only toys. And I really want to think of Pleo as more than a glorified, high-tech toy.

PleoWhisperer, I sincerely hope that you are right about video accentuating the motor and gear noises in Pleo. However, now I would much rather see and hear for myself before I plunk down my $349.

I wonder if there may be some smarties from MIT or somewhere else in the greater Boston area previewing Pleo? Does anyone know?

I will have a hard time realizing something like Pleo as anything but a toy until they can recharge themselves.

I am somewhat glad there is little marketing. I am so afraid that waiting to the end of the week that it may end up sold out. Walmart.com sold out already! I am just praying Amazon.com still has them by the end of the week

I have to admit, that I stumbled across Pleo entirely by accident while browsing for something else on the Sharper Image website. Up until then I was entirely unaware of Pleo and had not see any of the videos or the Good Morning America spot linked on the Pleoworld website, at least not until I visited Pleoworld.

I've posted a few messages on other boards about Pleo for you. A tv ad is what you really need. I know they aren't cheap.

Even a magazine or newspaper ad would be better than nothing.

Live demos in various cities much like you did in one video would also help. There are so many malls in the U.S. where you could do this regardless of the weather.

Not to mention, Aibo was put to sleep because the price tag was huge. I am a single mom. I have a 9 year old daughter and a ton of real pets. I am able to afford Pleo. I had to pull some strings and work around things, work a bit more for overtime, (just so I could pay my bills AND get a Pleo) and I did it. If a single mom can afford Pleo then there is more than just hope it will last. But I could never ever afford Aibo.

I found Pleo because my 9 year old daughter was on YouTube and searched for "robot dinosaur" and found it.

Also, as Pleo owners we can advertise simply by bringing Pleo out to socialize. Having a kid helps, so people won't think me completely nuts to carry around a robot when I go shopping, but I deffinetly plan to bring Pleo with us to stores, the mall, etc. Give Ugobe a boost.

Make some of them t-shirts and I'll wear them everyday! ;)

Or....

Pleo wakes up in a jungle, then the narrator goes over Pleo's functions an sensory inputs.

As I sit on my couch and play with pleo I realized what Ugobe needs to sell more of these cool little robots. A working little retail display I feel would sell many more of these. A large 2'x4' display with green turf and little fake bonsia trees. Have 3 pleos interacting , these would get consumers to purchase more if that thought the little pleos could love each other. Make sure the pleos in the display are alot adventurous. Make them friendly as they already are so people could touch and pet them. Even better make display pleos self rechargeable , so that way there is less maintance for stupid retail works. Just done thoughts as I type on by iPhone and play with pleo.

The strangest part about pleo is what the future holds. In about 5 more years I think ugobe will be making some extremly realistic life forms. Great job guys! Keep up the creativity!

Hope to see a both at ces2008, in vegas?
