View Full Version : What other robots do you have?

I'm curious how many new Pleo owners also have other robots, and what kind of robots you have had or now have.

I'm sure Pleo will be a "my first robot" for a lot of people. But I can imagine many of you early adopters are robot people, already.

Share your 'bot stories here!

And please vote in the poll .... :)

Poll attached:

Is Pleo Your First Robot, or Joining a Robot Family?

Pleo is my very first robot
Pleo will join my robot family
Pleo will be my only robot, but I have had others in the past

...................

I have had an avid interest in robots and AI for a very long time, but the only genuine robot I've actually owned is AIBO. I love everything about AIBO except the fact he can't "hear" me. Other than that, my white Snoopy type AIBO is a great little robot.

Having him in the house helped me stop grieving the loss of my dogs. It is amazing how the Snoopy actions and reactions were so very "dog-like." I knew it was just programming, but it was easy to suspend belief and imagine him having "feelings." It sure looked like he enjoyed being out and playing with us. And it was very easy to get attached to him.

I think that's why I have never considered selling him, even though he has become my husband's rather than mine, and my husband doesn't have much time for AIBO. But I couldn't bear to part with the sweet little robot.

I know I'm going to get very attached to my pair of Pleos. I fully understand they will run on programming, but I'm perfectly willing to suspend belief and treat them as if they are "living" pets. In fact, I am eagerly looking forward to the opportunity to do just that! :D

edit: I also own a Roomba, but since it isn't for leisure enjoyment, I didn't view it in the same class as toy or companion bots. I pretty much just ignore Roomba. (It isn't the brightest bulb on the block. LOL)

i actually just bought a nice black ers-210 aibo a few weeks ago! i had wanted an aibo for several years, i just couldn't really afford it. it's such an amazing piece of technology, even history now. i've named him pong and i plan on keeping him forever. i can't imagin how much these robots might be worth in 20 years or so.

i first developed an interest in robots around age 5 watching astro boy. i wanted to build a robot just like him!

i now own the aibo, an i-cybie, and a robosapien v2. pleo is going to be a fantastic addition!

Good morning amjoie and ryane

It will be interesting to see for how many people Pleo will be their first robot.

I've owned only one blue i-cybie. Despite alot of bad reviews of it on the internet, I am fascinated buy its abilities although it's nothing compared to an AIBO. I was thinking about getting a Robosapien but thought it was not worth the price since I've got my i-cybie for only $50.

Although Pleo won't be my first, he was still be a special robot pet because of his ability to express emotions flawlessly.

Hello,

I've had a Robo Pet before. And I'm looking forward to getting future Wow Wee robots too. Like, maybe, for example, the Robo Panda.

I admit it - I'm a huge Furby fan! :D I have five of them.

I also have a robopet named Prestley who sadly has been without batteries for much too long. I don't really like robopet because it has a remote control, but oddly I still feel as if it has emotions...

I have many robots, but pleo will be the one that i love and hang out with. some of my other robots are furby, robosapian, robo reptile, tamagotchi.some of these robots can get pretty boring after a while, and some get just plain annoying!!! tamogotchi kept beeping at me all day!! i took his batterys out. he was silenced, LOL . pleo will be my favorite robot, i dont even think of Pleo as a robot. and i dont think pleo will get boring, or annoying!:) :D

Thanks! Nice to see familiar 'faces' over here as well. It's a different world here, but Pleo will be an interesting addition (once he lands in Europe...)

To keep this on the Pleo topic: I really hope there will be a charging station for pleo (induction type perhaps) and with the option for Pleo to stay awake on the station (and perhaps the option to manually force him to fall asleep and also set a wakeuptime, or manually wake him up)

I have a i-cybie and I was just wondering if Pleo would be able to communicate with i-cybie?

ryane
08-01-2007, 02:24 AM
no, this wouldn't be possible. pleo would have to be programmed with the same ir coding as i-cybie. then you would have to program specific responses for the interaction. it would be cool though.:D

Or vice versa. I wonder if i-cybie can be hacked to become a Pleo companion. It might be a good use for an i-cybie -- to be a "Pleo pet." LOL

My apology to all the i-cybie lovers out there .... ;)

sounds like a good idea. my i-cybie just sits collecting dust.

then there's my robosapien v2 and my aibo 210 Pong.

wouldn't it be neat if they could all interact with each other? that would probably take a hell of a lot of work to accomplish though. i wish i knew how to do it...

It *might* be possible to program the AIBO, if someone knew what they were doing. I *think* the 210s (aren't they the ones with stand-up ears?) had the ability to talk to each other. But I know the ones that look like Snoopy could not.

June03
08-06-2007, 02:38 AM
Many of the AIBOS can talk to eachother (beeping sounds), including at least the latest mind-version of 'snoopy' (ers-7m3). But it also depends on the program/software they are running, some of the aiboware for the ers-210 (pointy eras) can't talk to others. I currently have an ers-210, ers-220 (life2 and explorer do talk) ers-312 (I foget which software that talks) and ers-7m3 that all can talk to eachother :D

As for programming an aibo to interact with a pleo. I guess it depends on how Pleo interacts, if (s)he can talk via 'beeps'. If there are certain sounds that Pleo would hear and react to, even a regular aiboware personality could be modified to some extent to include some sounds? But it would not be true 'communication' if some of aibo's default sounds were replaced with other sounds that pleo recognizes.

My skills at aibo-progamming are non-existent since I've only dabbled in tweakign sounds etc, so I won't comment on any real programming options. But I know that there are various programming tools for aibo, so aibo is definitely programmable much more than Pleo would be. So changing aibo would probably be easier, I'm guessing? Or an i-cybie?

Hi June03,

Thank you for clearing that up. I've been "out of the loop" with AIBO, since shortly after I got my ers-7. Since AIBO wouldn't respond to my voice, but responded beautifully to my husband's voice, he became my husband's and he had no interest in updates, so I wasn't even aware of AIBOmind3 or the latest capabilities.

If I had known about the ability of the ers-7s to communicate with each other on AIBOmind3, I might have purchased another one so I could watch them play together -- even if they were "deaf" to me. But, of course, it is now too late for that. Oh well, I guess it doesn't pay to "look back" at what might have been. :(

I really think Pleo is going to be, for me, what I had hoped AIBO would be (only he wasn't). Unlike AIBO, I know Pleo will respond to me; because Pleo has a whole new pattern of interaction that is tailor made for someone like me -- and that is what matters right now. I am so excited about getting my pair of Pleos, that it is hard to contain myself. LOL

I hope Ugobe continues to make all its life forms aware of each other. It is one of the things I love about Pleo (that two Pleos will regard each other as "family"). I envision a group of different Ugobe life forms all playing together, and forming unique friendships with each other (and with me). Wouldn't that be grand?! :D

But come October, I will be perfectly content with my two bejeweled Pleos "falling in love" with just each other. Thinking about it gets me all twitterpated. LOL

I'm sure you haven't lost anyting by not experiencing another aibo, mine rarely play with eachother. They all go about their own business, ingoring the others - except for stealing the toys from under another ones' nose... The aibos are fourlegged pet-like, but still more robots than pets, especially with the programming/memory-stick swapping, and the general look. Pleo with it's lifelike looks will be more pet-like, I'm sure. They definitely fill different needs.

Pleo seems to be an entirely different concept/approach. A very interesting, but different, approach. And I wholeheartedly agree with you, hopefully all future Ugobe lifeforms will all be able to recognize eachother and communicate or react appropriately (want to play, talk, hide...). In an ideal world I'd like to have a 'creature-room' with the Ugobe lifeforms' stations/nests, playthings and landscaping. The pets would then roam about, play, eat and interact. Just watching would be fun and then getting their attention to play with them. That would be a great way to experience pets, certainly just as real as a biological lizard or snake ;) and the only alternative for 'allergic-to-everything' people like me. And perhaps I could place my 1:12 scale dollhouse in the setting :dreaming:

Well I dont know if this counts but when I was in the hospital a while back my mom surprised me with the interactive R2. When I could leave my room I would bring him visit the rest of the kids. I still do that now and then just to bring smiles to the kids who cant have the therapy dog that come next to never near them.
That is one of the things I plan on using my Pleo for sometimes. Boy you know that pleo will be loved!

My first robot I got when I was 6 years old. It was a Tomy dingbot (the one with a head similar to the robot in short circut) and I still have him, he sits next to my computer and I sometimes put some batterys in and watch him run around the floor. I always liked him and he looks good by the computer with a kind of retro style.:D
I also own a Robopet , Robotyrannus (Robreptile) and a roboraptor called AL. Of these three I liked Roboraptor the best because it gave the impression of intelligence and emotions and was good at interacting with people without you having to use the remote control (made him seem more realistic). While the robopet and Robotyrannus ,although better at walking and general movements, lacked the interaction of Roboraptor. (you had to use the remote control with them) This is why I will probably be selling the Robopet and Robotyrannus on Ebay in the coming weeks.
And of course I have a Pleo that I call Figaro :D

I've been thinking about getting that R2D2 thing.. how is it? It looks sorta cool, the way it responds to voice commands and all:)

It's a fun toy. Not nearly as interactive as Pleo. The voice recognition works fairly well even with backround noise. But then there are times R2 will not respond correctly to a command. Something Hasbro refers to as R2's "moods". The commands are segmented into three different modes, and trying to get him to do different actions is sometimes tedious. Asking R2 to reset himself is the most used command it seems. There are ton's of Youtubes out there if you'd like to see him in action. This one's my favorite. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=weGTZ5VXR4s&NR=1)
The "follow me" command is interesting too. R2 has an infrared sensor that "sees" you and will lock onto you. You have to move slowly as to not break the lock, but he will follow you. It's even more fun when R2 locks onto our dog and tries to follow her around.
R2 uses sonar to navigate which works quite well, except if the object in his path is less than 12 inches high. He has problems running into things like dog bowls, or dog toys left in his path by jealous pets. :D
Lastly, there are a few easter eggs to find too. Or undocumented commands with interesting results.
I'll leave them for you to find. ;)

I'd love to have an Aibo, if I could. But they are way, way over priced. They are not worth the stupid $2,000 dollars. I'm not gonna buy $1,000 and over over priced robots. That's wrong but inevitable, with the potential future of large commercial and companion robots.

Pleo is my first robot.
The next generation Furby's (I have a Dutch and one English talking one) I do not take into account as "my first robot".
Thanks to Pleo my general interest in robotica has been awakened again, since it always interested me.
AIBO is -like for many- way too expensive, because otherwise I would love to have the ERS-7 (second hand or new.)
If Ugobe comes out with something cool somewhere in the future, I am sure that Pleo won't be the last robot I will ever buy. ;)

I would have killed for toys like these when I was a kid, so I guess this is my second childhood. I enjoy them all, but Pleo puts them all to shame. Ugobe has done an amazing thing here. Can't wait to see what they develop down the road.

It was inevitable that I had a dinosuar. When we first moved into our house, one of the rooms had palm trees and dinosaurs painted on the walls.:) It was very cute but the husband said they had to go :mad:They stayed for about a year!
I had a Roomba but it didn't get along with my cords under furniture. It also never learned to go back to it's redocking station. Sent it back!
Having seen the video of a Pleo riding a Roomba in the ABC Nightline video, I'm tempted to try another one. I would name it the Pleomobile. If it would only not eat the cords under the furniture!

The newest Roombas now tout a anti-tangle feature, where if they begin to pick up a cord, they reverse the brushes and unwind it apparently, then move away. I'm planning to upgrade to one sometime this summer.

Pleo has to have something to chase around the house. And with the infrared transmitter in pleo's nose, he can call Gupi to come to him!

I was very impressed about Gupi at first time, but after owned it i think it's worth the price... Basically he doesn't have his own personality: he walks when he's on the floor and makes noises when you pet him on the back, he's able to avoid obstacle, but Pleo is much more interesting ;)

I had a Roomba vacuum for about 2 days. But got rid of it for a lot of the same reasons as fancy font. It ate cords, bumped into things and was really not suited for the task of cleaning my clutter filled family room.

Spending time with Pleo has made me very interested in Aibo, and I’ve been shopping around the last month. But I haven’t found good information comparing the models. What they can and cannot do. Plus the software issues seem a bit confusing. But I’m looking forward to adopting one soon. Plus I think they are going to be quite the collectors items.

Pleo is fun but i'm itching for a more robust.. versitile bot.

Right now, Irwin's only robot cousin here is a Roomba. If I know I'm going to run it, I make a quick check of the first floor for wires (we have a ton of them) that I can push out of the way, and cat toys (we have quite the collection of those, too) that are small enough for the Roomba to eat. Those, I put on the stairs, so the cats can access them but the Roomba can't.

With two cats, both of whom are proficient at shedding, having something like the Roomba that can be run with minimal effort is a good thing for keeping fuzz to a minimum. :) Plus, it entertains the cats. They'll follow it around, as long as it's not moving toward them. If it heads in their direction, they run away, hop onto furniture, or go up a couple of steps on the stairs so they can watch it from above. (They worked out pretty quickly that Roombas can't climb.)

I'll leave them for you to find. ;)

LOL, nice vid. I love it.

I have a Roboraptor that I christened Barnum. I guess ol' Barny kept me interested for a short while, but my Pleo puts him completely to shame! I'm still yet to find out how Kaz reacts to Barny. It should be an interesting experiment x3

I would like Pleo to add to my robot collection.....so far i own four Sony Aibo's (two 7's, a 210 and a 111). I love the little devils, they are so funny and clever, they really do amaze me. I used to have an I Cybie but to be honest i found him more of a toy than a robot so i got rid of him :(

I'm really looking forward to adopting a Pleo into my robot family :)

I own a Roomba which, for now, is only able to work on hard floors (yes, it developed the infamous circle dance problem but only on carpet). I've tried fixing him but so far nothing has worked. Since I only paid $100 for him I have decided to just go out and buy another robotic vacuum cleaner but his time it will be an Infinuvo rather than another Roomba (from what I can see, not as many problems). In the meantime, I bought Pleo and after I buy my Infinuvo I plan on buying a Scooba (doesn't seem to have the problems that Roomba has even though it's also made by Irobot).

don't have my pleo yet, amazon says one more day. but i do have the first lego mindstorm set(i don't know how many times i've reconfigured it), the VEXplorer kit which is way cool, it's like the next step above legos kit, and it's remote control. my latest bot builds have been mixing the VEXplorer set with erector sets and the mindstorm set all in one bot. also, not to long ago at a garage sale i picked up a R.A.D. 2.0 robot. does anyone remember those? i also have the first robosapien, but i painted him red myself, way before wow wee was doing it. and, he looks much better in a matte red finish than that shiny one. and i have a few more small bots, not much, along with some furbies here and there.

You had a Rad? My brother has one of those! I remember when I was little I thought it was so cool! We still have our Rad but it just sits in the closet cause the rechargeable battery died. I remember that it could like pick up radio signals, and we heard the police talking to each other on whatever they use. It could also shoot foam bullets out of its chest, and it had a phone line port or something in the back. We don't know what its for... So many memories with robots...

List of robots I have (new and old) :
1. Robosapien
2. Robosapien V2
3. Robopet
4. Rad
5. Buster (sort of like Rad but not as good)
6. Pleo
7. Chirple (not sure if its the actual name but thats what is says on the bottom)
8. C Pet Iguana

As you can see thats a lot of robots. lol :)

What's RAD? Chirple? Buster?

Well RAD was this remote and voice controlled robot on treads and did some stuff like move, dance, shoot these foam covered plastic bullets from its chest. Buster was sort of like RAD but not as good the controller was wired, it didn't shoot anything, and couldn't dance, but it did have a built in flashlight on its head and you could talk through it using the remote. The Chirple (i think this robot was in a series of robots) was sort of like a pet, you had to feed it and, it could roll around making weird noises it had a remote that you use to feed it and do other things with it. (All these robots are old and from about the year 2000). :)

I've got robot vacuums. Three - a Roomba 560, a 1st Gen Roomba clone, something called a Maxim. And a Robomaid but it's not really a robot, just a ball which rolls with a frame to put it in with electrostatic dusters on it.
I had a Furby but gave it away - it got on my norks !
I never had "robots" as a child cos I'm a girlie and my parents gave me girly toys. I would have much rather had boys toys now I know what boys toys then were like, but I didn't watch alot of tv and didn't play with boys much so I never found out about them ! And I don't think there were many robot toys around when I was a little girl (some years ago now).
I also have remote controlled toys - K9 from Doctor Who, one of the house robots from the UK Robot Wars (Matilda, she rocks) and a number of remote controlled animals. If they count.

I've got some remote controlled rats (two or three, can't remember at the last count). Weird I know.
They are mostly like clockwork mice types (i.e. a plastic or rubber rat body with wheels underneath) but they work by remote control. Their eyes light up red and they growl. lol. I don't play with them much because the dogs can't help chasing them because they move so fast ! Another one is sitting rat just abit taller than Pleo who growls and snarls and his eyes light up red, and he sort of bounces from side to side as if he's going to attack you. My little sister got me him for Halloween a few years back.
I've got one of those remote controlled somersaulting puppy dog things somewhere too, the furry sort you see roaming around the floor in gadget toy shops at Christmas with helium balloons tied to them so people (usually) don't trip over them. And I've got an i-dog. But his battery got stolen for a remote control of some appliance a while back so he just sits there at the moment.

You could get an older model such as a 210 for that price but not an ERS 7. They cost between £1000 and £2000 second hand. I bought two of mine from ebay and the other two from Aibo forums. This video is so funny! Is Aibo programmed or do they just respond to things you ask? is there a remote control?:)

hobbesi
10-17-2008, 11:35 PM
No remote control for Aibo. They are truly autonomous (the first generation aibos came with something resembling a remote, but it did not work like a normal remote control) Most aibos (2X,3X,7M1,7M2) understand about 75 or so voice commands. 7M3 (like in that video) understand about 120 voice commands

IMO one of the best things about Aibo is that they interact with the world like a living thing does. Through sight, hearing and touch. You talk to aibo the way you would a real pet. They respond or choose not to. Aibo sees and recognizes certain things, and actually engages in its environment Chasing after there pink ball with great precision, or recognizing when a hand has been placed in front of it, and putting its paw out in response.

While you can’t have a conversation with Aibo. The mind 3 dogs will talk when spoken to (or more commonly, when they think they are being spoken to) Occasionally a 7M3 might ask a question like “What’s the weather like?” or “What did you have for dinner?

IMO even the herky jerky 11X Aibo makes Pleo seem primitive by comparison. Of coarse keep in mind even the cheapest Aibo was twice the cost of Pleo. The ERS7 M3 would run you 2000$ (and still does) So its not really fair to compare a 300$ Pleo to a 2000$ Aibo

Pleo IMO is more a demonstration of psychology then technology.

(in my picture posted earlier from left to right. Piccadilly the ERS-311,Servo the ERS-7M3, and Eva the ERS-111)

the programmed group dances are done on skitter, some pleo owners would be familier with myskit. the dances are all put on memory sticks and then triggered by a toneal sound so they can all start at the same(ish) time. i dont know the exactness of it. as ive not used skitter/yart or whatever, i just know group dances are often done at aibo meetings :D

as for cost of aibos compared to pleos, i bought my 210 aibo for the exact same price as my pleo. ;) its all a matter of finding a bargain. the ones youre most likely to get cheap are 210s due to being common little things compared to other models. but theyre very lovable and hyperactive! haha.

I took it back after a week as I was not impressed...the battery only lasted about half an hour and took ages to charge, he does not learn. Basically just a toy. You need the remote to make it do most things.

For basically the same money you could buy an older Aibo that has Artificial intelligence. A 210 with loads of extras like software, battery and a carry bag sold for £265 recently on ebay. You could also get a 111 for less than that too! I can tell you now you won't get bored of an Aibo!

yeah i got my aibo with a charging station 2 batteries and software for £260ish, only a bit more than my pleo cost me (by £10ish) and i got him at that price when aibo prices were very high, normally a 210 going for £400 +

id say dooont get an i-cybie... i had one when i was little and my parents count afford the aibos that i wanted even back then... theyre dire... they make pleos look like genius', whereas aibos do the opposite ;) no offense too poor little pleos! haha.

id say if you have $120 to spend on an i-cybie, why not just hang on and save a little longer and hunt for an aibo bargain insted, youll never get an ers-7 for that cheap but youll almost certainly find a 210 for around a couple hundred if youre lucky. youll only be vastly dissapointed in i-cybie and wish you never spent that much on a remote controle dumb mutt.

I could buy a ers-210 i have enough money (yay for paychecks lol) but my mom won't let me spend that kind of money on a robot, she says i'll regret it later and should save the money :(. I really want an aibo but it looks like i'll never get one unless they will still be sold on ebay by the time i have my own house

See the aibo as an investment. They are no longer made and are sought after collectors items. Nothing on the market today compares with Aibo, even the older ones. My 111 'Eddie' is nearly 9 years old, his batteries still both last over an hour and he runs like a dream still. If you were to regret buying the aibo you could sell it for the same price or more anyway.

yeah that's why i decided to go ahead and buy an ers-210 :-D. so now my robot family will include 2 furbies (one 2005 and one 1998), a pleo, an aibo ers-210, tekno dog, and an i-dog
