Hi,

Thanks, I know it's not a pleasant thought, but does anybody know Pleo's lifespan?

Most everything manufactured including electronics have a MTBF (mean time between failure) rate.
Gears, motors, sensors, and moving parts are subject to wear just like Pleo's skin with the paint wear. Not to mention heat and friction. Wonder if Pleo's gears, even though they are plastic have been lubricated at the factory? The skin should keep things clean inside, and dust outside. That should keep dirt from Pleo's innards. I love that design. Still wish it had a zipper so I could look inside.. and check for wear. Can you move Pleo's limbs, body manually without stripping the gears? I noticed Ugobe staff doing this in a video. Seems like it would cause the gears to strip or wear faster. Guess it's us who will find out all the answers to these questions SOON!

Hopefully it will be a loooooong time before we find out that out pleos are wearing out!! ;)

The majority of gears are inside their own gearboxes, so even w/o skin they're pretty well shielded from dust and the like. There are clutches in the joints to prevent severe damage (if you heard a clicking sound in the video you mentioned, that was a "break-away" clutch). I wouldn't suggest wrenching on them too frequently though. He's meant to be more of a pet than something you'd toss in a toy box :) . Pleo will sense if he's being encumbered w/ too great a load and either choose a path w/ less resistance or temporarily power down the motor if that path is impassable... cutting down the possibility of heat build-up. I've found Pleo will typically run out of battery power before heat becomes the issue.
