View Full Version : Forum being flooded by nonsense posts

Dear Forum Hosts,

As there is no private way to get in contact with you I will leave a post here and if you do not think it is wise to leave it open for anyone to read you may delete it or move it to a private area, though I would not be at all worried if they left this post around for everyone to view.

I am becoming slightly annoyed with the dilution of useful and interesting posts by meaningless posts. I frequently use the "New Posts" tool on the top bar to quickly look through what has changed since my last visit, however since these nonsense posts started I am having the new posts list increase by forty or so posts in a matter of hours, which makes it very hard to find posts worth reading.

Now I am not complaining about the increase in activty of the forum, I see this as a great thing, more people can only mean better business for Ugobe, however I am increasingly finding reading the forum less and less enjoyable.

I have no suggestions for the hosts on how to remedy my problem, thats if they even see that there is a problem, and I would hate to start to seem like I was telling the hosts to do their jobs, as they do a fantastic job running the community and it must take hours of work a day, however if they know of any ways I can filter through the junk posts without cutting out any useful posts, please could they privately let me know, either by PM or by e-mail.

Many Thanks,
degers

Hi degers and thank your for your post. This is something we have been discussing lately so I'm glad you brought it up. :-D

In the past the community had so few members that we didn't worry too much about off topic posts, however we too have noticed that the superfluous posting lately is burying important information making it difficult to find.

We'd welcome input from other members on this subject so we can make a decision on how to handle it in the future.

As to an immediate solution degers, there isn't anyway to ignore certain posts however if you find any particular member is posting more things that you don't want to read than posts that you do want to read you can go to that persons profile and from there put them on your "ignore list." I do know that this is not an ideal soloution. :-(

Cami,
After posting my original post I read through the community guidelines, they state:

"Remember we are here to talk about Pleo, off topic posting, posting about things other than Pleo and robotics may be removed."

Maybe this could be used to just remove nonsense or unrelated posts, for instance posts that just say "lol". In a chatroom this would be classed as flooding and would be dealt with quickly. I welcome our new and enthusiastic posters but I would ask that they restrain themselves slightly and post more imaginative and interesting posts than "lol".

I am sorry to be a killjoy or partypooper ;-)

Your ever grumpy degers:eyeroll:

Wow, degers, i never thought of that, but i totally agree! both me and pleoguy101's threads have been attacked by nonsence posts. I will not say who theyre coming from, that would be mean, but i agree completly! I wonder how UGOBE will deal with this problem?

I did start using the "Ignore list" last week, because there were just too many meaningless posts. That did help, but as you said, it's not the best solution, especially if someone on your ignore list does post something worth reading, you'll never see it.

Come to think of it I have been posting more off topic posts then on topic posts!
But I don't use any other forums and I come here to talk about what ever is being posted and I like to do it with the same people. I think it would take out some of the fun if there weren't some off topic posts.

mweed

It's not the off-topic that's the problem, it's that the posts are "meaningless". They add nothing to the conversation and serve more as a distraction

Thank you Degers for starting this thread. I've stopped using the search for new posts exactly because of this problem. Thankfully it seems to be just a couple posters here that are only interested in having the highest number of posts. Maybe there's a way to limit the number of posts a person can make per day?
Just a thought.

Well, anyone who's been on the forums for a while knows I read a lot of comics. And as usual, there is always a current comic strip that fits the current situation . . . (this one came out today ;) )

I've got to agree with everyone here. I've started to spend less time on the forum because of that. I still hit the new posts but then I tend to only look at a couple of threads like Bob. I can't miss the latest installment but then I sign out.

Great comic Mike :-D

Well I have added two users to my ignore list. I hate doing this and it is by no means an ideal situation but I hope this makes the forum a little more enjoyable to read. I hope that the hosts come up with a better idea! I'll give some notification on thios thread if it helps to clean up the new posts view.

We'd like to remind everyone that the PleoWorld community is for the purpose of discussing Pleo, UGOBE products and robots in general. Our wish is to have the forums so it is easy for members to navigate and to find pertinent information in a timely manner.

We'd like everyone's cooperation in this matter and draw your attention to two of our Community Guidelines:

Remember we are here to talk about Pleo, off topic posting, posting about things other than Pleo and robotics may be removed.

In an effort to keep the PleoWorld Community informative and topical we will remove any post we feel is not a benefit to a thread's discussion. We will also remove off topic posts on a per-thread basis. Please remember that you have the Water Cooler to discuss off topic subjects.

No Advertising – Posts containing ads or Spam will be removed.

Since advertising is not allowed we are also going to ask you all to remove "Calls to Action" from signature lines that do not link to a Pleo or UGOBE related topic. A "Call to Action" is anything that requests another member to do something, such as "Click here," "Go To," "Please click on my eggs," etc.

At this time you may continue to request clicks in the "Would You Like a Dragon Egg" thread. You may also have your eggs and dinosaurs in your signature line but you may NOT add requests for clicks or links to your scrolls in your signature lines. Links to Plogs, personal Pleo pages, Bob comics, etc will still be allowed, as they are Pleo related.

Thank you for your cooperation, we know that everyone will benefit from these small measures. :-D

I just clicked on the New Posts link. There are 27 new posts since I last visited this afternoon. Of those 27 New Posts, there are only THREE different posters, TWO of which have posted only ONCE. I'm probably going to get banned for this, but someone here needs to get a clue! I visit this forum several times a day in hopes of new info on the PDK, or other updates and tech posts. It seems that just a couple of posters here are making things difficult for the rest of us. Can our ignore list get tied into New Posts link somehow without hurting anyone's feelings? Kudos Cami for being so diplomatic, but something tells me they're not getting the message. Please, I don't want to have to depend on your e-mails for new info on Pleo. But I also don't have time to sift through one posters continual "LOL" comments.

First of all let me say thank you to everyone for being so understanding about trying to solve the initial problems. We've seen a remarked improvement in a very short time!! :-D

What appears to be the complaint now is that some people only want to find technical type information and don't care about the "just for fun" type subjects.

So here is what we'd like to do and we'd appreciate help from all of you. We'd like to keep all threads in the following categories as much on topic as possible: Welcome to PleoWorld, Pleo's Life OS & Features, Pleo Ordering, Registration and Warranty, & Feedback & Suggestions. We'll be more lenient about off topic in Pleo in Pics & Print & Pleo Cafe and will remove nonsense posts in all areas.

In this way those of you who are only looking for the technical information can go to those areas and just look for the orange boards (signifying new posts) insteaf of searching for "new posts" for the entire community.

I'm beginning to think it might be a server problem. These may be members who did visit the forums, but the server is still thinking they are online when they left long ago. The web server may not be releasing sessions or the vBulletin software may not be properly tracking the users. This is also based on the assumption that Ugobe is using multiple web servers to host the forums, and that they are load balancing based on login ID (why only the lower half of the alphabet).

Or, it could be everyone's waiting to vote! ;)

Hi Everyone,

Cami, Raine and I wanted to let you all know that we have been reading this thread and talking about what we can do to help.

As you all know last week we asked that the topical threads be kept on topic and everyone has been doing a great job of helping out with that! Great job, keep it up! :-D

We would like to take a moment and remind everyone to try to be nice to others in the forums. There is the ignore option if you do not want to see other member's posts. Additionally, if you want to avoid off topic posting stick to the forums and threads that are topical. The hosts will be keeping those threads on topic.

We have also seen your requests for a way to communicate with the hosts privately and will be discussing the suggestion this week.

Thank you for your suggestions and for being a great group of members! :-)

How many accounts may one person have on the forums? Are you going to limit this, I am not trying to point fingers at all but it's gonna get rediculous if people start to create 3+ accounts and start to have conversations with themselves! It's not fun trying to read through all that stuff!

Hi degers,

No we don't limit the amount of names one person can have. In actuality there is no feasible way to do this as a person can use as many EMail addresses as they want to register. We already have several members in the forums who have multiple names and have for some time.

As to members with multiple names talking to themselves.... the only areas I see this happening is in the play areas such as Fantasy Pleo and the Pleo Cafe. As members take on new personas (such as their Pleo's personality or other characters) we will probably see even more of this. This is the nature of role playing. :-)

Also as the community continues to grow with new members there will probably be more repeat questions asked by new Pleo owners. This creates the possibility that using the "New Posts" feature becomes unmanageable and members will have to stick with the forums that interest them and bypass the areas that don't.

If anyone doesn't wish to be involved in the role playing or other games areas of PleoWorld we urge you to stick to the areas that do interest you and watch the bulletin boards down the left side of the forums main page. If there are new posts in a forum the board will turn orange and have an extra message tacked to it. Once you open the forum any threads with new posts will be bolded or a darker green. This way you'll know where the new posts that interest you are.

I hope that makes sense and helps. :-D

The wandering off topic seems to be the nature of these forums, but I ran across an interesting statistic in a Wired magazine article (http://www.wired.com/gaming/gamingreviews/commentary/games/2008/09/gamesfrontiers_0908) about kids learning the scientific methods from playing video games. The author researched the "World of Warcraft" forums where she found that 86% of the posts were technical/problem solving related and only 14% were "idle banter". I would have to say we're more towards the 86% idle banter and 14% technical/problem related. I don't have a problem with that. It's what makes us more of a "community" or "family", and a friendly place to visit. And I admit most of my posts probably fall in that category too. (How serious can Bob the Pleo be?) That's what the "Pleo Cafe" and the "Pleo in Print & Pics" are for. But the other areas should be more for technical content.

The problem is, all of the forums, including the technical areas are filled with this idle banter. And I'm afraid we may be losing people who are looking to learn about pleo, but all they see are dragons and "I agree!" and and other idle banter. I bring this up not as a complaint, but as a concern. Like other active members, I correspond with other members and pleo owners outside of these forums as well as inside, and I have become more aware of members who have "dropped out" of the forums because of this lack of "real" content. As I see it, the problem is two-fold: 1) lack of support by Ugobe, and 2) lack of support by the PleoWorld Community.

Lack of Support from Ugobe: I start here, not to pick on Ugobe, but because it is something most members can easily see. For years, Ugobe promoted pleo as THE open platform for robotics and AI. Yes it is a cute toy, but Caleb himself said he would cosider pleo sucessful if pleo tuned out to be nothing more than an open platform for people to learn and play with robotics. We have yet to see the PDK. The OS is not all it was touted to be, either, and updates never come out as qickly as us consumers want them too (or think they should). I, myself, signed up on the Pleo bandwagon because I was looking forward to hacking and coding with him. (Of course, it's that lack of anything tangible in the way of a PDK to program pleo, that we have a Bob the Pleo comic strip. It evolved out of looking for some way to fill time while waiting on Ugobe!) . We can't fill the forums with technical content unless we ahave something technical to discuss . . . . When was the last time UgobeTyler was online?

Lack of support from the PleoWorld Community: While it's easy to blame others, we as members of this forum also have a responsibility. Not everyone is technically minded, nor can we be writing code (yet), but we can still provide more meaningful content. I have yet to see a single person post files for use with MySkit or YAPT (not just a video of their pleo performing the skit). I've seen lots a pictures of pleos in outfits, but nobody's posted any detailed how-to's or clothing patterns. There's been lots of discussions about how everyone would like to attend pleo meet-ups, but they never seem to happen. Has anybody (other than Hegle's hair) had any successful mods to their pleo? Come up with fixes to problems that they could post photos and details?

Suggestions: I know our hosts have set up guidelines, and they do their best to help, And I don't really have any good, concrete solutions, other than to say what has already been said about keeping the fluff to the fluff areas, limiting non-pleo discussions, and stopping with the two-word "LOL!" and "Me too!" posts. But we should be able to put our minds to it and come up with stuff that will attract people and get them to want to stay with the forums. I would like to think new pleo owners could come to the forus and say "Wow! I didn't know that!" "That's a good idea!" and "Cool! pleo can do that!?!!" rather than coming and loking around and going "Huh?!?"

. . . . And now back to our regular program . . .

I didn't know that!" "That's a good idea!" and "Cool! pleo can do that!?!!" rather than coming and loking around and going "Huh?!?"

. . . . And now back to our regular program . . .

mweed, that's amazing! Wow, I didn't know you could speak like that!

Excellent speech, in other words!

Sorry if this is off topic, but I have to admit that I'm probably the biggest off-topic-er here.

When I joined this forum, I remember Helge (Caaahl) That were willing to help with problems
Degers hasn't posted in a while and I miss him. So many I cant even name.
But its being taken over by nonsense posts. People wanting to beat another in the amount of posts you have. So they post stupid posts.
People tell them and they don't even get it.

I my self am tired of it I come here look at new posts and its all nonsense that I don't even want to look at. I leave. I'm sorry but it has gotten way out of hand here. I blame this on Pleoworld for letting it get out of hand.

There is no content here. Even a person asking for help gets a LOL why? post come on!

The support that use to be here is gone. Its gone to HUH?

Sorry just my 2 cents And I'm out of here my self.

I like the joking and and off topic posts, when they're in their place. All the posts in then Fantasy Pleo forum don't bother me, because I just ignore the whole forum. I read the posts in the fun and games forum, and expect to find jokes and off-topic stuff. But like wgb said, when I go to the Tech Talk forum, I don't want a to see a bunch of LOL posts.

I like the joking to. But there is a place for it. When some one is asking for help and they get a silly answer whats the point?

I like off topic but so many threads have gone beyond this too. I dont even know what or where I want to read.

And so many threads are being brought back to life because they see a way to respond. Whats up with that?

Im sorry but every time I come here and see certain names I just leave.

I dont post in the "technical things or problems with pleo sections" , unless I have a good answer, atleast I hope I dont post nonsence in serious threads. I apologize if I have. butI agree that many people should seriously wach where they post things. because I have noticed that the people that liked to talk about the tech stuff, like hardy foster, and pleopet, have left.

I've noticed that some of the people who posted nonsense and annoying things have left now. Is that strange, or waht?

Everyone here has some valid points. Remember, this is a community, and as such everyone is welcome. We all just need to make a conscious effort to post our messages in the appropriate thread. By doing so, it makes it alot easier for everyone to navigate through the forums and only read the the things that interest them. Dont forget, you do have the option to block those posters you wish to ignore. :-) Happy posting everyone!

I do agree with most of you, that it is very annoying when you post a serious question that might change whether your Pleo lives or not is answered with "Why?" or "For What?" or "What?" or "I don't know"

Very mad about this situation in particular.

Alas, if it were only that simple. The problem is, whe you put someone on your ignore list, you don't see the contents of their post in the thread, but the threads are still maked as having new posts, so you've got to take the time and look at the thread to see if others have posted or only the person you are trying to ignore. And if you use the New Posts link, all those ignored posts are still listed there, so you have to wade throught them anyway to get to the ones you want.

What would be ideal, would be if the furum server could filter out the ignored person BEFORE determining if there are new posts . . .

Again, mweed has a point. We would like it if anyone could fix this situation. Due to this annoying fact, now no one is on my ignore list. :S

hi pleoguy101 and mweed i agree off topic is getting bad now. off topic should be kept to off topic thread. its getting harder to ask a question on technical threads as ones you have asked it every thing goes off topic and you have to hunt for your reply, i do hope something is done about this.

The simple answer is don't add to a thread unless you have something and meaningful to say and not to reply to a thread because it has been posted to recently. The idea isnt to get your name on the most "Last post by" panels that you can!
