I've had 2 Pleo's within the past week. Both brand new out of the box. Both purchased at the same time but not received from Target.com at the same time. My first one was running fine for 2 days, no problems. Upgraded him and he started freezing within minutes of activation. He's walking then just stops frozen. Does nothing, picked him up nothing tapped him, nothing. Turned him on/off...nothing. Called customer service (that was fun) and was told it was charger. I knew it wasn't but hey what do I know? Was really annoyed after I hung up the phone after calling 2 times in one day and returned it. Received the second Pleo the next day. Charged him and have been running him for the past 4 days. He's perfect, sweet and very life-like...I'm in love. Like an idiot, I updated him this afternoon. Well gee, he wakes up, starts walking around for about 15 minutes and then...FREEZES! Same thing as the first one. It is very obviously the OS is causing this. My husband is an engineer, I'm a teacher. We've been around robots, having 3 Aibos. I knew going into this that this is a new product and there are bugs to be worked out but to have two of them not work right out of the box in a week is really annoying. This isn't a cheap item and I was very excited about having this to demonstrate robotics in my classroom. I can't take him now. Will it freeze every 5 minutes? Not to mention the fact, it just looks morbid standing there frozen with it's eyes wide open. Please don't tell me to contact customer service. After my first attempt at that...well, I'll never call again. And yes Ugobe you were very understanding and had great follow-ups when I wrote about the gentleman that caused the problem. However, I just can't be sure I won't get him again and I can't take that chance. I feel like all I've done is complain since I got him. I love him and then he breaks and then I get generic feedback from Ugobe about what is wrong. It isn't the battery, it isn't the charger. They worked fine all the other times I used him BEFORE the upgrade. I don't know what anyone can say here I'm just really ticked off. You guys wanted people to form emotional attachments to them well...here you go. My perfect Norbert is now not perfect. He's frozen and looks morbid. I want the old OS back and I think it's crap that yiou can't go back. I don't know whether to return him or not. I of course don't want to but 4 days and this happens and it's the second one in a week? I'd be afraid to update to the new OS. Geez, I'm just so frustrated right now!! I literally feel sick...literally!:(

Hi HJPotter, sorry you are still having problems.
It's much easier for Customer Support to troubleshoot with you as it can happen in real time but maybe we can all help narrow things down here for you first. First of all, let me assure you that the vast majority of people here in the forums have upgraded and are running Life OS 1.1 successfully.
That said can you give us a few more details on your upgrade experience. Did you do it by SD card or using the USB and the automated updater utility?
Did you use the same download for both Pleo's?
Do you think the program installed correctly on either or both Pleos? In other words did Norbert (and the other Pleo) make all the appropriate sounds and then awaken, etc during the installation?
Is it possible that the Life OS 1.1 upgrade was corrupted during the download? Such as a power surge, modem problem etc?
If using the SD card method are you sure there is nothing else on the card and that all files were unzipped before copying them to the SD card? (Voice of experience on this one. LOL)
I know a couple of people who had problems with Life OS 1.1 redownloaded the file and did the update a second time and that cured the problem.
UGOBE, and most of the people in this forum will try their best to help you. :-D

Hi Cami-
Thanks for your reply. Sorry about my rant earlier. I'm just frustrated. Anyway, I used an SD card. My husband did download and unzip the program before putting it on the card. We got a new card for the second one and when we loaded it, he chimed multiple times and then booted. I turned him off and removed the card. It took about 3-5 minutes total. I just finished running him again on a second charge and he ran for about 1 1/2 hours but instead of going to sleep when his battery ran down, he just froze again. I turned him on/off and same thing. He's stuck standing up with his eyes wide open. I guess it's overreactive but it grosses me out. I liked that he curled up and went to sleep. It looks like a toy now...that died. It appears that the shut-down routine isn't finishing prior to power down. I would appreciate any advice you have. :)

Hi HJPotter,
You could in the future put Pleo to sleep before his battery runs out by holding the sensor on the top of his rump at the base of his tail. Just hold your hand on it until he curls up! :-D

Thanks Cami-I'll do that but why is he not doing it automatically anymore? I am also confused as to why other users don't report this as a problem. It seems kind of strange that I would have 2 that do it.

Not going to sleep when the battery runs down was/is a common issue other users have reported here in the forums.

Havoc and Rex, my two previous pleos both ran the 1.1 LifeOS and would curl up and go to sleep and emit a single snore sound when their batteries ran low.

So then there is a problem. I wish Ugobe would release the source code. My husband and I would love to take a look at it. Could be a hole in the state machine, a pointer issue, or a shut down issue. I'm leaning more toward a shut down issue. Ugobe needs to have him shut down sooner say at 6% battery life instead of 3%. Could possibly be a memory issue but I'm really throwing that out there. At any rate I hope it's rectified in the next update because this sucks. I don't want to have to figure out when I think he's about to shut down and force him into sleep. I didn't have to before I shouldn't have to now.

your pleo is cute! sorry to hear abput the problem, but have you tried to download the 1.1. again? Some members here have done the same thing and all works great!
maybe you should do that online with customer support :)

Thanks for the advice junkroxy! Maybe I should I just don't want to mess anything else up but maybe a file did get corrupted or something. I'll give it a go I guess. What have I got to lose? :D

Thanks to those of you who have observed and reported this problem. We really appreciate your concern. We have seen it here as well and have logged the problem. The issue is related to shut down timing and the status of the battery. Our team is working on it to make it more reliable in a future update.
