Yes, Plesiosaur is considered an aquatic reptile, not a dinosaur.
Also, speaking of Nessie. I read a book a year ago called The Loch by Steve Alten. Its a horror/adventure novel about the Loch Ness Monster. And all I can say, without giving spoilers, Mr. Alten has one of the best REALISTIC theories about what Nessie is.
Also, a Water Horse has two separate descriptions.
A.) Nessie, a mysterious monster, thought to be a (colony of) prehistoric reptile(s) that somehow survived
B.) Kelpie, a horse that comes out of the water and often is so beautiful and willing to be ridden, people jump on its back, only for the Kelpie to turn back to the water and drag them under, drowning them. Similar to many tales of sirens and mermaids.

:DThats very interesting siren. I was very interested in Nessie when I was a kid, and I researched her alot. Eventually I came to the conclusion that she couldnt possibly exist. I dont know. Werent Plesiosaurs dinosaurs? I mean, they are like sea going dinosaurs, like icythosaurids and pliosaurids, (such as the Koronosaur and Liopleuradon). I read Loch years back and I liked it. However I am of the opinion that there is no way any kind of plesiosaur could have survived what ever obliterated the Earth at the end of the cretacious (although the existance of crocodiles certainly makes a person wonder!)

After the Meteor hit the Earth, all life on Land was wiped out. But life in the Ocean was relatively untouched.

Uh... no. The ocean would have gotten hit just as hard. The resultant shock waves as dust storm from the impact would have blocked olut the sun for months, maybe years, and made the oceans rage and swirl. Next to nothing could have survived that blast.

Falseprophet666, you couldn't have read "The Loch" by Steve Alten "years back", as the book was only published for the first time a year ago. The book does not even toy with the idea that Nessie is a prehistoric throwback.
And according to scientists, aquatic reptiles are not dinosaurs. I believe it has to do with bone structure. For the same reason a crocodile is not a snake. They are both reptiles, but in separate orders. The inner bone structure is very different fron dinosaurs. Dinosaurs tend to have hollow bones, aquatic reptiles did not. I believe it also had to do with joints and how they differed. I am sure there are various other reasons. But I am not a scientist. Also, flying reptiles, like pterosaurs were also not dinosaurs. But according to scientists, dinosaurs were terrestrial reptiles. While other reptiles then were groups into aquatic or aerial.
I don't believe Nessie is a prehistoric throwback. However, I do believe there is a Nessie. And I believe it is the theory that Steve Alten makes in his novel.
If you go here, you can download a free excerpt of the book and also see some concept art and scultures of what Nessie may look like. http://www.theloch.com/index.html
And a lot did survive the impact, including large animals. Crocodiles and sharks for instance. It wasn't just cockroaches and mice that survived. Facts like this is what fuels the fire for Nessie and Mkole-Mombe enthusiasts. That if large animals like sharks and crocodiles existed then and now, virtually unchanged, that maybe, just maybe, dinosaurs, aquatic reptiles, and even aerial reptiles live today. Add this to the growing knowledge that many tribes then and now, have stories and witness accounts of seeing dinosaur like creatures and you got a whole branch of cryptozoology.
beside even if plesiosaurs where dinosaurs that wouldn't mean crusoe is one. He's a WATER HORSE based on nessie which means either way he's not a dino, just based on a creature that is thought to be a dino.

Very true. According to the movie, Crusoe is a different species. Both male and female, it lays one egg before it dies, so only one Water Horse is alive in the world at any one time. His body and head structure are similar to plesiosaurs, but not exact. He is his own species. People compared him to something they knew existed at one time. In legends, the water horse is magical, but it seems in the movie, he's just an animal with no magic. Something that maybe the druids saw a few times and they imagined it was a magical creature, as many cultures have places magical qualities on mundane creatures.
Yep. that's my point.
GO NESSIE BELIVERS!

I'm thinking of a different book I read then. It was caled "Loch". It was about the Loch Ness Monster, but it was awfully short. But on the subject of Nessie, if she is actually there, why are there never bodies? Surely something would have washed up in the 200 years shes been spotted. I often wonder about Crocs and sharks. They both date long before the Triassic. But there it is. If one would have survived, others should have also. We have sharks and crocadiles, plus the coelocanth, lampreys and co, but there arent any Liopleuradons or Elasmosaurs. If you folken want to believe in magic animals, thats fine with me. I'm just stating my opinion at this point, as I'm clearly out voted :>)
Well, I think it is possible. there have been sightings in lake morar and champlain and some other places whos names i don't remember. Surly you know the ogopogo tessie and bessie. Most sightings like those have the same description as nessie.
so maybe those are other plesiosaurs.
Heres the link to a website that has all those monsters on it and if you scroll down on the home page you will see a cacass with a nessie like appearance! http://theshadowlands.net/serpent.htm

On the "why don't we find any bodies?"
Ever find the body of a bear? Or a wolf? Or a cougar? Or an alligator?
I've lived in Florida for 15 years. We have bear, panthers, and alligators. I spend a lot of my time around the water and in the woods, as an avid animal and nature lover. I've never seen a dead body.
Thing is, in the wild, nothing goes to waste. Animals are eaten by scavengers within hours to days. Bones are scattered and buried. And when an animal knows it will die soon, they often find a place quiet and far from heavy traffic of people and other animals.
Also, some "bodies" have washed up. Champ had a body, which was lost. Japanese fishermen found a body that resembled a prehistoric reptile, they dumped it because they thought it was bad luck and it smelled. And Loch Ness has had some odd happenings there.
A few recent stories have involved carcasses on the shore. Half eaten with large bite marks. Its been going on for years, but only recently have farmers been talking about it. Their sheep have been found at the waters edge or in the water, missing large chunks. The bite areas look clean, like it was one large bite. Another one, I saw the video of some people spotting something on a cliffside on Loch Ness. They drove their boat closer to find a half eaten deer carcass up on the rocks. Problem was...If the animal fell from the cliff, it would had landed in the water, not on the cliff face. Other problem, there was no way a person could get the deer carcass that high. It reminds me of how leopards put their kills high in trees to keep it away from scavengers so they can finish it later.
I have NO DOUBT there is something in the Loch as well as other lakes and the oceans around the world. A large predator we have yet to identify. But I doubt its a prehistoric monster.
And I don't think anyone said we believe in magical animals. If you re-read the posts, you'll see we were talking about the legendary Water Horse, which depending on which author you are talking about, may look like a horse or it may look like a reptile. Just as reading myths about unicorns, some describe it as a beautiful, white gentle creature that looks horse like with a horn on its head and others describe it as having the feet of a rhino with a blood red horn and it would sooner kill you than look at you. That's the thing about myths, cultures and people change them as the stories are passed around. The movie Water Horse explained Crusoe was not magical. That it was an animal. And that people thought it was magical.
IMO, all lake monsters are not plesiosaurs. I don't think they exist. I feel they are the animal as described in the book, "The Loch" by Steve Alten, which is a good size novel. Not really a day's read.
I've seen most the things you listed. The carcass where they threw the carcass overboard is on the web site I showed you all. I totaly belive in lake monsters and it's good to see one more person on this planet that belives too.

I like to read a lot about cryptozoology. SciFi had a new movie on last night Beyond Loch Ness. Had a pretty cool theory. That plesiosaurs do exist and they live in the oceans, but they follow underground channels into freshwater lakes to lay eggs. In all truth, sharks do a similar thing, as do many species of fish. They leave the oceans to go to mangrove swamps or freshwater rivers to lay eggs or give birth to their young. Many species of sharks do so in mangrove swamps. Where the babies are protected from the large sea predators and when the babies are of age, they leave the swamps for the oceans. Salmon do the same thing, going into the freshwater rivers to spawn. So they probably got the idea from that. And it helps makes sense why there are so few sightings of Nessie. So for those who believe in the prehistoric reptile theory, it helps give them some fuel for their fire.
Cryptozoology is often called a pseudo-science, but those "crackpots" have made discoveries. We think we know everything about this planet, but new species are still being discovered. And not just bugs and butterflies either. We are still discovering medium to large sized creatures. We have so much to learn about our own planet.
That is a great theory! I certainly agree. That is the most belivable idea yet.
By the way, i just got back from the water horse, great movie!

:DI could go on... but if you convince someone to change their belifes, then those werent their beliefes in the first place. You all seem pretty convinced of the existance of prehistoric sea monsters who are never seen alive by people and never come up for air, so I fear we will just have to agree to disagree. don't know... I used to be really into cryptozoology, but I guess I got sick of looking at grainy photographs. As H.P. Lovecraft said "The hitherto withheld photographs, both ordinary and aerial, will count in my favor, for they are damnably vivid and graphic. Still, they will be doubted because of the great lengths to which clever fakery can be carried. The ink drawings, of course, will be jeered at as obvious impostures, notwithstanding a strangeness of technique which art experts ought to remark and puzzle over." Aside from that, the bodies of crocs are found all the time, mostly decomposed and taken off by sanitation folks or scientists. Any bit of blubber or anything is carted off to the lab for analysis.
Siren

I agree with your first sentence.
Also, I've lived in Florida for 15 years. Again, never seen a body. And scientists only take bodies of animals they suspect died under unnatural circumstances. For instance, a few years ago, a lake in Central Florida was having a large fish, bird, and gator kill. Scientists took many of the bodies, the rest were collected and burned or buried. And it was discovered that it was the effects of pollutions causing the lake to become unlivable for nearly all life. But a random animal found here or there dead, rarely is taken away, even by sanitation. I've literally seen bodies of dogs, cats, deer, wild boar, etc laying on the side of roads for weeks till they were nothing but bone and finally even that was gone, scattered by animals. Only when a body is found in an area that is densely populated or in front of a business do sanitation crews take it. And its not just my county, but much of the East Coast seems to be that way at least. We have scavenger animals. And many people rather see vultures and coyotes eating roadkill than going through their trash.
And many photographs are faked. But there are those that still baffle the hardest skeptic. And grainy? Yes. Considering many of them are old, the people were nervous and shaking, moving the camera when they took the picture. With the digital age, there is a high chance we will see clearer pictures of newly discovered animals. Already have recently, with scientists discovering a new giant rat and pig species.
"Croc bodies found all the time" and carried off by sanitation and scientists often, by all means, site your research on your findings there. I know what I know because I am a nature addict and I have worked in the animal and nature fields for over 10 years. I've worked with Fish and Game officers that have been working in the field for 30+ years and they have yet to see a living or dead black bear, but they still know they exist. That's kinda my point with cryptozoology. That just because you don't have evidence of one, never saw one, doesn't mean someone else didn't. I do believe people can mistake a new species for being something like a Pleisiosaur, but I do believe there is still a LOT we don't know about our own planet. Think about what we've learned in just the 20th century. In the 20th century, we discovered Mountain Gorillas, Giant Pandas, Giant Squid, and even an American waterfall. The waterfall gets me. No, of course its not alive, but that is my point. Here is this colossal waterfall in the USA, that is on NO map. Its been there for 1000s of years. It can't move, or die, or hide. We just kept passing it over and over again, never knowing of its existence, till a couple of hikers off the beaten trail stumbled on it just a couple of years ago. If a waterfall can be discovered in this new millennium, right in the USA, imagine what else is out there.
Falseprophet666, you realy are skeptical about these things, but if there is no nessie then what is that creature that people keep seeing? i suppose it's just a tree or realy big fish that swims across the loch. People descover new things every day. And Siren is right, just because you haven't seen it doesn't mean it's not real. And I sugest you should check out http://youtube.com
Siren

Thing is, people have been seeing a creature in the Loch since ancient times. Druids who lived and worshiped near Loch Ness have many legends and stories about a creature(s) living there. We have ancient legends of unicorns, but we know those to be untrue. Why? Because we figured out they probably saw antelope in profile or saw one with a broken horn, so it appeared to be one horned. While there has yet to be one really good explanation on why we still have sightings of a creature there, that is very similar to how Druids described it centuries ago. The fact that we have sightings by good witnesses like law enforcement, locals, doctors, etc....witnesses we can generally trust, it makes me wonder what all these people are seeing, if its not an animal. I don't see how for centuries people describe a similar animal and somehow it can't exist?
Again, I do NOT feel its a prehistoric reptile, but there is DEFFINETLY an undiscovered animal there.

We just watched "The Pirate Movie (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0084504/)" with Kristy McNichols, and old comedy/musical. During the big fight scene at the end of the movie, The chef walks into the middle of the fight with a cart full of pies. One of the bad guys says "Oh, no! not a pie fight!" to which the chef replies "Not that kind of a pie fight, a pizza pie!" At which point he starts throwing pizzas at everybody. There were many flying pizza slices that night! Believe it or not. ;) :D

Awesome video! I'd say it was work $180-190. The remote looks nice. Looks like a lot of options. And the fact he can "see" obstacles is great. No Pleo certainly, but a nice addition. I wonder what Pleo will think of them.
Now here is a Pleo related question...
How do you feel Wall-E will effect Pleo and robots like him? Not just talking sales here. But public interest in robots. When people think they want a robot, they usually want one to act like a servant. Or to have a task. Where as many robots are out to entertain. Wall-E being nearly $200 is more than a toy. Though not as advanced as Pleo, he still seems to have a lot of great aspects. And both Wall-E and Pleo convey emotion. We are seeing more and more robots acting as companions rather than gophers.

For me...in release order:
Wall-E (so cute!)
Hancock (Will Smith as an anti-hero...love it!)
Hellboy II-The Golden Army (And stay down! lol)
Journey To The Center Of The Earth (Brendan Fraser...*swoon*)
The Dark Knight (Joker...nuff said.)
The Mummy 3 - Tomb Of The Dragon Emperor (they love me...two Brendan Fraser movies in ONE summer!)

I took my daughter and out Pleos to Wall-E. VERY good movie! Innovative and beautiful to watch. The attention to detail was mind boggling. We shut off the Pleos when the movie started, but they were watching it in spirit. And the movie goers went nuts over them before the movie....it was like a pre-show

The Hulk was awesome! The second movie Marvel put out on their own, and it was great. I hope they redo Spiderman at some point. Those movies were terrible. Right now all I'm really living for is Hellboy 2. Mike Mignolas books are fantastic. the simplistic expressionist artwork combined with his ability to mesh the stuff of pulp fiction and mythology are just awesome. Dark knight looks good too. Is that fellow from the first movie playing batman as well?

It looks cute, but doesnt seem even nearly as personable as Pleo is. I cant see myself hugging and kissing that squeeky little critter. I do have to say though, he does have a lot of neat things that Pleo could use. Pleo needs a huge hearing upgrade for one, which I'm sure the guys up at Ugobe are working on, plus the eyesight.

Meh, another Global warming flick. I'm living for Hellboy right now.
Actually, the story is a love story first. About a little robot left alone on the planet. The girl robot Eve, has only known protocol and directive. And when she meets Wall-E, a robot who though not a rule breaker, often finds other things to do, other than the job he was made for, she becomes interested in him. Especially after Eve is somewhat framed to be defective. He is the one who saves her.
The environmental part of the movie was the second story, but not the main focus. Much like Happy Feet, a love story and second, a story of acceptance by his peers, lastly, environmental.

One can't help but feel as though that was the whole reason the movie was made though. People will ask their kids, "Hey, whats that?" and the kids will respond, "Oh this is Wall-e. He was in a movie where all the people left the world and forgot to turn him off." From there on in the question arises. Why did everyone leave the earth? I don't know. I kind of wanted to see it too, but I'm tired of people flashing messages in my face. Entertainment shouldn't be about indoctrination. While we're at it, why not have Ted Turner revive Captain Planet?
Siren
07-05-2008, 04:03 PM
They didn't forget to turn him off. And it wasn't global warming. The landfills got full of junk we don't need. It was about commercialization. The irony of that isn't lost on me, believe me. Since Disney/Pixar is licensing Wall-E and Eve images to so many toys and products.
In the movie, the humans have a capitol company. B&L (Big and Large). It was on everything from stores, to transport, to buildings, etc. B&L made all sorts of junk people bought and eventually threw away. The landfills filled so much it made the Earth uninhabitable. So the humans left. But B&L made robots, Wall-Es, millions of them to clean up the Earth while we were gone. We were suppost to return as soon as the Wall-E's finished, but like all B&L products, many of the Wall-Es failed. They all broke down. Wall-E, the main one for the movie, he developed more intelligence, he learned. He learned to fix himself. He was able to continue his objective, clean up our mess. He did this for 100s of years, alone and lonely, other than the cockaroach friend. And watching Hello Dolly over and over again, seeing in the movie, the emotion of love. He learned love that way. And when Eve came, the first "living" robot he saw in years, he of course fell in love with her. And when she leaves, he doesn't want to be left alone again and follows her, hitching a ride on her ship.

I saw this at the Maker Faire (San Mateo). I chatted a bit with an engineer. I thought out of the box it is pre-programmed much like the Pleo, and additional utilities to follow to allow us geeks at it and make changes. Also there's a good amount of empty space inside the WallE, so you have space for addiitional 'brains' (mindstorms, etc).
I actually think it's a bit big to have around the house (compared to a Pleo), but it does seem easier to park
in a corner of a room. Now if it can really reach my frig to get a beer - then maybe I should reconsider...

I see you've got Pleo, D-rex, and WALL-E all listed in your signature. I wonder how Pleo in watchdino mode would respond to D-rex in its guard-dino mode? Better have a referee on hand, just in case they start squabbling with one another. ;)
