Surprisingly, I thought I was going have hours and hours of fun with the Creature Creator even before it came out.
That this demo got released was a very nice surprise.
But I got bored quickly and made about 2 creatures total.
Sure it's fun, but it won't be the element of the game I would like to spend hours and hours on.
One thing is for sure: I am so buying this game when it comes out! :D

I spend maybe 1-2 hours on it every other day. There is no actual game, so I agree, I get fickle after a while. But when I think of a creature to make, I'll make one. The array of parts and pieces is great, but I was wishing for a bit more. Especially with textures. Long fur, mane, real tails to choose from. Like a horse-tail, lion tail, rat tail, etc. Right now, you can get the tail bone to stretch, but then have to get a bit more imaginative to add something to the end to maybe make a lion tail. No way to make a realistic horse tail. And the original demo videos showed you being allowed to mold the body yourself like a piece of clay. I would love a long slender body, with a high waist and deep chest, for a mongoose like animal I want to make, but can't seem to get it right. I hope the full game has more creature creator features like the old demo videos did.

I'm actually was thinking how surprising it was that no one has tried to make a Pleo yet. I was going to try to make one, but then I came to my senses (http://www.spore.com/sporepedia#qry=srch-pleo), and just did a Sporepedia™ search.

like... these for example (http://www.spore.com/sporepedia#qry=srch-chocobo)? I think you just have to be creative. No telling if the final version won't have more or less features. Early versions of the game did different things, but since the creature animations have to work for just about anything you make, I think Maxis had to settle on a symetrical design for all creatures. This is still the most amazing animation system I've ever seen dispite the limited animations included in the creature creator. Maybe try searching for My Little Pony or something. Maybe in this universe no one has hair.

I think it's safe to say the creature editor is in the can, my buddies over at EAQA say they are working on game balance and the rest of the game is pretty much "locked", maybe once the game comes out they will start working on expansions or new creature design methods.

As for molding, I got some decent results using the mouse wheel on the spine and getting really creative with arm pieces. Even my mistakes look awesome. Do you have any idea how long it takes to make a fully 3D model in a traditional 3D modeling program? Let alone animate it, color it, texture it? Even if it's not perfect (bores me in like 2 minutes flat, it's almost too easy), it's still pretty amazing. The game -from a technical standpoint- is absolutely mind blowing.
To be able to just pick a few bits and pieces and stick them together like that is so cool.
Despite it's "limitations", I was shocked when I read the news on how many creatures got created and uploaded in the first 24 hours.
With peaks of 1000 creatures uploaded PER MINUTE.
The Pleo's made by others looks pretty well done actually.

I agree, its amazing and I do enjoy it, I was mostly disappointed that the end result thus far, you can't mold it like clay, like they showed you in the demo videos. Maybe the final product you can, if not, then it is what it is. I sometimes get frustrated when I try to simply lengthen the tailbone to make a long tail and all I do is make the whole body long. I guess I have a think for long tails and tails in general. A tail can add a lot more character to a creature as well as define that creature a lot more, IMO. Even a choice of tails, like we have a choice of arms would be nice. Now the choices of hands, feet, faces, etc are great. I just want more tails.

My other minor gripe is when I tried to make a unicorn. For the life of me, the horn refused to go in the middle of the forehead, unless I made the forehead huge. I had a really good looking unicorn, even the tail was ok. But the horn would only work on the nose or behind the eyes. Couldn't get the horn where a unicorn's horn is suppost to be. I thought the program was gonna allow you to anything you wanted with the creatures. Limitations were only your imagination...unless you want to make a unicorn :P

I've not gotten my Pleo yet (waiting for payday) so I thought I'd mention that theres a new game coming out for the PC called Spore. A game where you can create virtual creatures and evolve them so they develop into advanced societies.

The game is out in September by which time I hope I'll have my own Pleo. But for now you can download the creature developer pack. Theres two versions. One version is free with limited options and one that is £4.99 (or equivalent currency where you're from) with the full pack of editing options.
You can fully customise your creature with different skin colours and patterns.
This is mine that took me less than five minutes to do with the limited free creature editor. I'm not going to buy the paid for editor because I want to wait for the full game to come out.

Hello everyone,

Yesterday the music from a certain game popped in my head again.
This music (and the game) has always haunted me because it's so beautiful.
It was released in 1995 and at the time (when CD-ROM was becoming more and more popular) was absolutely stunning.
I know there are a lot of young members here who probably never heard of it, but I hope there are some who did.
My dad gave me the original game disc once when he cleaned up his house and I cherish it really close.

Why did I decide to share this golden oldie with you guys?
Because of the simple fact that it's all about dinosaurs.
In fact, it represents a time where dinosaurs and man lived together.
One could say that Ugobe has done the same in the present time, bringing the dinosaur back in the form of Pleo.
It's a point and click adventure in which you rebuild that trust and the bond between man and dinosaur, for it has been lost thanks to a destructive tyrant called Moorkus Rex.
