Hello wonderful Pleo fans!

By now most of you have heard of Pleo's upcoming appearance at Maker Faire (http://www.makerfaire.com) next weekend and the live video chat Q&A on October 20. We're starting to collect questions right now for the question and answer session. Caleb is no longer able to be a part of the chat, but we are delighted that John Sosoka, who you may remember from the webisodes, is able to step in in his place.

You will find details about how to participate in the video chat on the PleoWorld Maker Faire page (http://www.pleoworld.com/home/special). I wanted to give you a bit of a head start, though, so post on this thread by the end of day Tuesday to let us know what you're most curious about.

Cheers,

i'm curious about simple customization of pleo's behavior/moods/drives. how much can we tweek him? could we possibly even take away drives such as hunger and desire for interaction? will the software we use to alter pleo's traits be downloadable to use offline?

can we back up his personality so it can be writen to an sd card when we need to?

will ugobe continue writing new programs for pleo? if so, what kind of programs?

pleoguy101
10-12-2007, 03:44 PM
will pleo dream? and how will he sleep for that matter? do you just turn him off, and also, will pleo come with directions and a software on how to program him, and how many sounds can he hold? how much will extra batteries for pleo cost?? I KNOW, I HAVE LOTS OF QUESTIONS:Dif you dowload a new sound into pleo, will all of his other sounds still exist, or will the new sound go over another sound? and as pleo gets older, will he be able to walk faster then he did as a baby?? will pleo know the difference from light and dark? can pleo react to dogs and other animals, and small animals like hamsters?can pleo tell the difference if hes seeing things move on the t.v or in real life? can pleo balence on two legs?? and as pleo grows older, will he blink faster? because of most the pleo videos I've seen him, hes a baby, and he slowly blinks his eyes. is there a temerature that pleo is most safe in?how big are pleos batteries?will pleo still need a plug to charge into the wall? ........ FEW, THATS OVER!!! for now:D, sorry jhon, just I've been hoping for a time to ask YOU my pleo questions, and so very little time to ask you, only till tuesday I've heard, well anyway, hope you can answer my pleo questions, even though some are pretty weird :)... THANKS!!! AND THANKS FOR MAKING PLEO UGOBE!!!!!!!!!

How durable is pleo? Can he survive if you drop him? How about if he falls down a flight of stairs? Can a two year old break of any choking hazards? Will the skin eventually seperate and break apart? Does pleo work outside? Can pleo take liquid spills? How often does the battery need to be replaced? Could the price be brought down with mass manufacturing in larget quantities? Will there be more models of Pleo coming out in the near future (same shape, or a new animal)?

I may think of more!

1. Battery questions:
A) If I play with Pleo until the battery is exhausted and needs recharging, is it recommended that I rest Pleo for a specific amount of time before I put in a freshly charged spare battery -- or can I just change out the battery and continue playing with Pleo?

B) If it is OK to change to a fresh battery, without resting Pleo, how many spare batteries can I safely use, in a row, without resting Pleo?

C) Is it likely or unlikely that we will be able to buy spare batteries and spare chargers before Pleo ships?

2. Behavior questions:
A) Will Pleo continue to learn, grow, and change, for his entire existence?

B) Will early good habits eventually disappear, if I inadvertently change my interaction with him?

C) If I discover Pleo has a bad habit, can I eventually change it with determined training?

D) Will my two Pleos form patterns of interaction, due to familiarity, that will be potentially different than how they might act with a "stranger" Pleo -- or do all Pleos interact with each other the same, whether they have been together for a long time or a short time?

E) If Pleos form patterns of interaction between pairs: does it follow, then, that they might develop preferences of who they enjoying playing with the most? In other words, do they develop "avoidance behaviors."

F) Will Pleos form preferences for the type of interactions they have with certain people -- or are a Pleo's total combined experiences the determining factor for their personalities/interactions, and because of that, they react the same to whomever interacts with them?

G) How quickly do habit patterns form, in a Pleo personality?

3. General questions:
A) Is there anything I can do, to entice Pleo to come to me when I want his attention?

B) Does a Pleo's intelligence "build and grow" with the richness of his environmental stimulation and people interaction -- making older Pleos, smarter Pleos? (Or will we need to wait for AI upgrades, to get a smarter Pleo?)

ryane

how hard will it be for programmers using the sdk to add voice and face recognition? is it really possible? is the hardware capable of processing all of it? (with the original firmware life os without slowing down the overall performance)

how fast are the central processing units in mhz?

how much internal memory does pleo have?

i also would like to know if pleo learns throughout his "life". i wonder if behavior continues to change after pleo reaches the juvenile stage and thereafter. if he does continue to change, is there a way to freeze his evolution if we decide we don't want him to?

how long will pleo "remember" his owners treatment toward him whether good or bad? will we be able to change this?

will ugobe release firmware updates? if so, how many updates do you think ugobe will release for pleo? how different or major and with what kind of additions are you hoping to add to life os in the future?

has ugobe thought about writing programs to be sold on sd cards to augment pleo? (abilities such as owner recognition, music detection/dancing, or just packages of new sounds or personalities?) we would buy them!

Pleo is a full-size camarasaurus. Full size for a week old camarasaurus. ;) I assume you want a full size adult ? I don't think FedExcan help you with the shipping. You may have to check with your local freight shipper or rail yard... :D

yes, every thread must have some humor:), and here I am with more questions:) what will pleos personality changer/sound dowloading place look like?, will pleo know if somthing has a musical beat in other words can pleo tell the difference between music and talking,if pleo becomes a rebellious teen, can we teach him to stop without programing him a different way, can we run several batteries in pleo immeditaly after each hour? when will pleo batteries be avalible..... WHEN WILL PLEO SHIP??!!!!!?????!!!!:D

First I would like to say how excited and happy I am that UGOBE is pursuing this line of robotics! I think Pleo will open many doors ~ some expected and others not. Pleo to me is like the first step on the Moon ~ this little critter will be opening a new world to us! Thanks so much UGOBE!

A few of the things I am wondering about are:
1. How long are Pleo's motors expected to last? And can they be replaced when need be?
2. Also how durable is Pleo's "skin"? Will it last 10 years or more? Can it be replaced or patched?
3. From what I have read Pleo comes with a 90 day warrenty. I realize Pleo is a very complex organism but this seems like a short period for something that is going to be a life long companion. Will there be an extended warrenty available? And some Camarasaurus vet clinics (repair centers) handy?

Thanks again ~
Patu

Will Ugobe encourage "hacking" (in the good sense) and expanding on Pleo, or will it be an evil corporation like Sony and discourage and punish those that try and be creative with its product?

For the experienced engineers and programmers out there, how "low" will the SDKs for Pleo go?

Will we have full control of low level functions like individual motors and video frames from the camera?

Will there be an interface for accessing such data?

How easy will it be to remove Pleo's skin and reveal the true beauty of the engineering and mechanics?

Hi everyone,

Prema reporting from Austin, TX at the end of the first day of Maker Faire Austin 2007. I want to apologize personally for the unreliable nature of the video streaming and the lack of a live chat. I hope you enjoyed the Q&A with John that was recorded earlier in the day. The questions from this thread were great and covered a nice variety and depth of topics. When I get a chance to see what questions John answered in the Q&A, I'll take a look at what questions haven't been answered yet and try to find the answers to ones that I don't know the answer to (or simply let you know that we don't have the answer yet!).

Well, in spite of the IT and Audio/Visual problems we had with the video streaming and non-live chat, I've been having fun here. If you ever get a chance to go to a Maker Faire, I certainly suggest it, because people come up with the most unlikely and brilliant creations -- such as a baby dinosaur ;)

We'll continue streaming whatever video we can live from the show, though as you might have noticed, the connection disappears and has to try to reconnect every once in a while (it feels like every five minutes to me, but it may not be quite that often).

I'll be posting some photos here that we took today at the booth.

'Til later!

Cheers,

Hello all,

I loved the interview that Julie Crabill of ShiftComm (http://www.shiftcomm.com/) did with John Sosoka. As you know, due to the noisy acoustics of Maker Faire, it was sometimes hard to hear what was being said so I transcribed it (typed out what was said). I got permission from them to post the transcription on my blog. You can read the full text of the interview on my Pleo Dinosaur at Maker Faire (http://www.robotsrule.com/pleo/2007/10/pleo-dinosaur-ugobes-john-sosoka.html) blog post.

If anyone has any Pleo/Ugobe pictures from the Maker Faire that I could get permission to post to my web site, please let me know. I'll give full credit to you of course. I'm really bummed I couldn't make the show!

Hello, just wondering if anyone saw Pleo in Austin at Maker Faire? I saw him, and I was so nervous to pet him, in case he didn't live up to my expectations, but he was FANTASTIC! His skin is so much more awesome then I thought it would be, very reptilian, and Pleo likes a good chin rub. He caught my arm in a nuzzle and wouldn't let go of me, and he cried when I handed him over to my hubby. btw, the hubby loved Pleo, which is strange because he was not convinced at all by the videos, but he played with Pleo until he fell asleep. Wanted to try the leaf out but there was a leaf hog in the booth, she wanted the Pleo she was playing with to eat a bunch of leaves. Doesn't she know he's a baby? Tummy is too small for all those leaves. Anyways, the woman at the booth giving out stickers said that the release date looks like it's heading into December, as long as Pleo is home in time to eat some Christmas tree then I'll be happy :)

I'm so happy to view these cute photos, but so sad about my questions, there are many questions answered (more than 1) of all the members, but not mine. It's slightly sad cos i'm a huge fan of Pleo, but without answers about his availability in my Country. :(
I hope to hear some good news soon, but i'm really disappointed now about this mistake... sorry!

sorry that there was no answer to your question junkroxy, but if ugobe doesn't know when pleos shipping in the U.S , they probably dont know when hes shipping in Italy. but... if you have friends or family in the U.S you can contact ugobe and ask if you can change the address of where your pleos shipping to, then tell your friend or family member once the get pleo, to ship him to you, then pleo will come to you around the same time he comes to us!!:)

Thanks! I had to rerun parts of the video in a loop until I picked out most of it. Ugobe and ShiftComm were kind enough to take a look at it and they caught a few errors I made. A big thanks to Julie Crabill at ShiftComm (http://www.shiftcomm.com/) for doing the interview and giving me the corrections.

Thank you for your hard work! Your efforts are most appreciated. :)

It will take me some time to catch up, and watch all the live feeds that were saved, since I couldn't see it as it happened. But at least I could get up to speed with the questions that were answered during the interview. Your transcript made watching the video a lot easier ....

I just want to take this opportunity to thank whoever was responsible, for choosing to answer some of my questions in the interview video. :D

Hey, premapolit, what are those round green/white pleo things on the table (last picture of the first installment) and how can I get one?

I was a little disappointed by some of he answers John gave. I was hoping for a more detailed SDK when they first ship, but I guess this way I'll get to play with him a lot more before I start playing with him.... :)

I think they wanted a more complicated SDK, too. Their time schedule was wrenched when they had a forced return to hardware development, at the expense of software development.

In one way, though, it could end up being a good thing. They cannot afford to have a period of "let down" once Pleo ships, because they didn't technically "finish" what they hoped to get into the first Pleos, in terms of software.

So the excitement to finish that part of the goal still exists, even after shipping. Sometimes, having something else interesting to do after a big deadline is good, so the company doesn't experience an anti-climatic "day after" lethargy.

You can tell I try to put the best face on everything, can't you. After all these years of thinking positive, it comes naturally. LOL

Those are indeed stickers, and since you all are so excited about them, we're about to send out an email telling everyone how to get them. But I'll give you all a head start since supplies are limited.

Send a self-addressed, stamped envelope to:

UGOBE, Inc.

P.O. Box 8397
Emeryville, California 94662-8397

*Department of Pleo Adhesives

Cheers,

It was nice of you to give us some advanced notice. Thank you! :)

But what I liked best when we got the actual email, was this little tidbit:

"Good news: While not without challenges, our test production results were positive, and we're on track to begin production very soon. Update to come in early November."

That sounds like the "update" could *maybe* be the thirty day notice, in early November. Wheeeeeee!! :D

I didn't get an e-mail.

Hey Pleo fans. Robot Central (http://robotcentral.com/?p=143)had a chance to sit down with John at Maker Faire and have uploaded a number of videos for you to watch. The topics John discusses are:

* Can Pleo sing?
* John on industry standards.
* What language are Pleo’s behaviors written in?
* John on Pleo’s sensors.
* Will there be other Pleo family members?
* Do Pleo’s behaviors evolve?
* Why a dinosaur?
* Is Pleo programmable?

Enjoy!
