Could someone please make the Pleo equivalent to Dog's life?

Is it possible?

In that case I'd be so so interested in Pleo!

Some background: DogsLife is an open source personality for AIBO created by Dogsbody (who also created Skitter and MySkit for Pleo).
DogsLife reinvented and improved many of the features in the regular Sony AIBO personality. It had to be reinvented from scratch because Sony didn't release the tools they used, and didn't release the "source" to the personality. Many custom tools were written.
It was a heck-of-a-lot-of-work

> Is it possible? (for Pleo)
It is possible, however reinventing a personality from scratch is a lot of work. Pleo has more open tools, but the personality is not open source.
IMHO: the best solution for Pleo is for UGOBE to release the source code to the default personality (with a caveat that it is not supported by the company). That way programmers can improve and extend the personality themselves, without having to reinvent everything from scratch.

That would give Pleo owners the flexibility to adjust parts of the personality and perhaps take the best parts of different versions (for example a hybrid of the 1.0.2 and 1.1 versions if you weren't happy with the upgrade)
More important it would let people experiment with new features that will be more fun to use, since they will be added to the default personality (and not a stand-alone, personality-less program)

I support releasing the default personality code; it will give us a variety of evolving personalities to choose from :D
I would urge other members to express their support for the idea
anyone who had AIBO, have had the opportunity to enjoy Dogslife and other cool personalities
please chime in on this - let's encourage Ugobe to open up a bit more :)

i'm afraid it won't help any for everyone to jump on this thread and chime in. if ugobe wants to release the source code they will. i doubt they will. it's all of their hard work. why give up the company's secrets of the life os on the first lifeform or ever. sorry to be negative but why would they?

because it's good for their customers and for their product
plus, it's not like they are releasing OS for commercial use... they still will be the only company who produces life forms with OS in the market... it's just that there will be a lot of personalities to choose from for Ugobe life forms... it will be amazing! just imagine hundreds of programmers working on new personalities... long winter nights... to make life forms do just one more cool thing... (it's not fantasy - look at Aibopet/Pleopet and Dogsbody and others - they do exist, and they are ready to start working for you just as soon as the code becomes available. actually, they already are - check out aibohack and dogsbody websites; but they can do so much more; and they aren't in it for the money - just for pure fun)

Selective comments:
You can always ask....
I agree that is unlikely that UGOBE will release anything unless their customers demand it. They are still working on the features they talked about before the first release.
Based on anecdotal evidence, it looks like most Pleo owners will be happy with the official firmware releases, when UGOBE gets around to releasing them.

FWIW: My main interest is in getting source code for the base personality in a human readable format. You can already reverse engineer 100% of the functionality today (ie. there are no 'secrets'). Hacking *without* the source is more difficult and much more tedious, and not fun. Hacking *with* the source would also be difficult, but you would be working on true robot programming problems, not reverse engineering something that is closed source.

Bottom line: I'm not foolish enough to think an open source approach is a *guarantee* of success. However, I've seen far too many cool robots die because the company is worried about 'protecting' their software from their paying customers. When the company gets into trouble or customers complain loudly, they may release more, but it is usually too little and way too late (many examples including AIBO, iCybie, ER1, etc)
#end diatribe...

to our beloved admins...
can we please get an official statement from Ugobe team on this? What are they planning to do? Are they considering releasing anything more than the PDK?
Thank you
