View Full Version : Pleo's feet and giving them more grip.

I noticed on polished floors and tiled floors Pleos don't seem to move very well and thought maybe it's because the soles of their feet don't have any grip. So I was wondering if attaching those small round adhesive rubber floor protectors or anti slip pads would be okay? The kind I'm talking about are about the size of a 20 cent piece (a dime in the US) and about the same thickness. They adhere with a little bit of two sided sticky. Would this interfere with Pleo's sensors on the soles of his feet?

I wouldn't think it would interfere with his senors, because the way those sensors work (as far as I know) is they push in. And if they don't feel pushed in to him, that's when he knows he's being picked up and freaks out. As long as they don't cover the entire bottom surface of the foot, you should be okay. =)

I cut some larger pads to fit inside the the recessed rectangle on the bowtie shaped pad. This added the traction for hard floor surfaces.

battery life is probably going to get shorter due to higher resistance...

How do you mean  Battery life is short enough as it is already. I would have thought with less resistance Neon would be able to walk better. But then I still haven't been able to activate high step yet so I'm holding off until I can figure that out. :)

I can't seem to connect this logic with putting foot pads on him. The only thing I can think of, is now he'll be able to walk around more, thus draining battery life a little more. But I really doubt there will be any difference at all.

Although I suppose there could be a marginally shorter battery life, I just expect that Pleo will travel farther on a given expenditure of energy. As it is now, Snort often stands in the same place, essentially shuffling his feet and making little headway for his effort :)
I will be adding small pads to Snort's feet also, as we have lots of tile and vinyl floor coverings.

when pleo's feet slide, there's less work for motors, because they hardly move anything. When pleo's feet 'grab' the floor with improved traction, they actually have to move weight now - and expend more energy - that's the 'logic'. I don't know how significant is the impact on battery life. probably not significant. higher resistance probably increases ware as well. probably not significantly.
personally, i prefer my pleo to spend his active time confined to a table, petting and interacting with him as I work on my laptop, taking short naps here and there. His battery usually lasts 3 hours or so that way. Plus, hopefully he will last longer. Pleo isn't really made for walking, I think--too slow, not efficient, doesn't have a good enough eyesight to really 'plan out' his travels over long distances (like find somthing he is interested in from a far, and then walk there...). Maybe for short-range exploration, sniffing here and there, checking out office desk clutter. :)

I'm still baffled how you guys are getting 3 hours out of Pleo's battery. How long do you charge it for? When he takes a nap how long do you let your Pleo nap for?

I don't let Dougie nap and he can stay on for more than 2 hours. The second he curls up in his napping position I usually play with his feet and it wakes him up back to his wiggly state. Like I said in your topic, the more charges you do, the better. It's nothing about charging it longer, because you can't charge it past when the green light comes on anyway. Just be patient and keep racking up the charges-- you'll get there! =)

I put Waffles some baby socks with those grippy rubber pads on the bottom. You know, the ones babies get grip at their first steps. It doesn't only look hilarious, he walks really well with them too!

I noticed my pleo walks very well on hardwood pavement, for you guys with that problem you should try with slip pads, there different types on the market and works very good! i tried one year ago when i got I-Cybie and i hated the clack! clack! of his foots :)
