View Full Version : Don't Like 1.1, Miss 1.0.2

I really miss OS 1.0.2
Now with OS 1.1 Pleo has this almost constant chewing and eating, repetitive stomping, and sometimes exaggerated noises – it feels more like a toy now.
1.0.2 was more subtle and refined.
It’s true, pleo explored less. But let’s be honest, exploration is not his strongest point. In fact, with him exploring more it kills the illusion because he is not really good at it. He is much better at interaction, and that’s where OS should focus I think.
I would hat to see it go in the direction of tamagochi, where it is going to be depressed without attention from the owner. It isn’t very realistic from the life form perspective. When any sociable creature is left alone, it does get depressed and sad at first. But all living things adapt – they get over it. They become more independent if left alone, not sad.
If this is turning into a nagging tamagochi-kind of thing, that will turn from fun of interaction into work of constant petting just to keep pleo happy, with toyish over-exaggerated effects, then Pleo isn’t for adults then.
I hope Ugobe is not going to go the ‘tamagichi toy’ route.

Can I have 1.0.2 back?

Mhm..my pleo roams around like he did before 1.1, when i am not paying to much attention to him. Try to ignore his begging for attention and maybe he will get more independent again. Its considered a feature, so when you pet him too much, he gets used to it and wants it all the time. At least, thats what i think i know about it.

I would guess based on the method of install that you should be able to use the SD card update method to reload 1.0.2 into pleo. It works for reloading over corrupted updates and can be reloaded over itself. It appears to simply load new images to the two CPUs and copy data files into flash memory. Would be nice if we could get one of the tech guys like UgobeTyler at Ugobe to confirm before you go wiping out your pleo's mind . . . . ;)

Caaahl,
with 1.1 it started to roam more, which is what I don't like. I don't like it because it would stop interacting with me suddenly, and just take off. In biology we learned that the strongest stimuli always takes priority (like when you hear a loud sound, you stop whatever you are doing, and you check it out). So to me it is unnatural when Pleo in the middle of interaction with user just suddenly takes off exploring(??)
i guess Ugobe wanted to increase the drive to explore, but it's clumsily implemented. It's very predictable. I can tell for sure that if I leave Pleo alone for a certain period of time, it will go explore, every single time.
in regards to exploring, like I said earlier, object detection and walking are not pleo's strongest points. It's slow, and clumsy, and not very realistic. It's like watching a struggle of the machine against the laws of physics and even lame obstacles present a world of challenge. It kills the illusion of a living creature. Therefore, I think pleo should explore less and interact with objects that it detects more. Movements should be less jerky and more refined. I would rather have Pleo spend 5 minutes sniffing and trying to interact with the obstacle, rather than see him move jerkingly back and forth trying to drive around it. I mean what creature backs up like a car, then turns a little, and moves forward - then repeats it all over again if not successfull. It hurts to watch it.
And my final complaint with 1.1 is because Ugobe I guess tried to make him more "energetic," he is now less "fluid" and less stable. Mine even lost balance once, he was rocking back and forth so bad. It may sound fun, but it does not look life-like. It looks out of character for him. Perhaps Pleo should be hyperactive, but sometimes, not like all the time. Bursts of energy look nice now and then; but with OS 1.1 he seems to be "out of balance and jerky" all the time. With 1.0.2. he was hyper some times, and that gave more depth to Pleo.
And then there was this moment of 'sickness' which looked so fake and over exaggerated! He suddenly got sick, and in a minute or so he suddenly recovered. He did not do much except for that minute his voice have changed and he was said... C'mon, Ugobe, you can do better than that! Please don't turn Pleo into another I-Cybie with canned performances and all...

Having a downgrader would be nice, for people like myself who are simply not sure about 1.1 yet, and just want to wait and see. UgobeSarah said it herself, updates to the current version were not mandatory.
I guess the real issue is that we are all different, and the only thing that is going to make everybody or most of us happy is having different Pleo personalities,
or!
having some way to customize Pleo's personality to our liking - like make it more active or less active, explore more, or explore less;
determine it's gender (it's kinda unnatural I would say to have a female Pleo, with a female name, that snores like summo fighter)
Ugobe! Please give us tools for customization! Please release the code and the community will take care of itself! There are many people who are on stand-by to start creating a plethora of new and exciting personalitie! If you revisit your marketing studies, you will surely notice that one of the main reasons adults buy this product is CUSTOMIZATION. Please tell us when the tools to tweak the AI will become available?
Thank you!
A.

A female and male update would be nice, making Pleos obviously male or female. Just a side addition though, with the possibility to turn it back normal.
As for the 1.1 update, I can't say quite much yet. Only that Waffles seems to have more problems seeing walls and objects then he did with 1.0.2. But I'll let evolution take course with him and see where Ugobe takes him.
I would like to know how long Ugobe tests new updates before releasing them too. Just wondering.

There is no pre-determined length of time for testing Pleo updates. UGOBE tests an udate until they are satisfied that it accomplishes what they want and that it will be easy and safe to update. They then release the update to volunteer Beta testers to double check the update and report any problems or concerns they may have. Once the update has passed both stages it is released to the general public for download. :)

:DHere we are, complaining again.1.1 is very, very satisfying. Last night I was up last night till 2 in the morning all alone watching Cradle of Fear, an underground british horror flick, and by the time the film was over I was terrified to climb into bed and read. I glanced behind my desk and noticed that Little Jengas battery was done charging. Jenga helped me calm down enough to relax and think logically again. I'm not very technical, but I feel that Pleo is finally beginning to reach the state the Ugobe truly wants. Last night, while I was cuddling Jenga and listening to my music, I didnt think for one minute, "I'm holding a little rubber dinosaur that runs in circles and barks at walls." I truly felt like I was holding a little baby, snuggled against me, keeping me company. While I agree that Ugobe maybe should try to up Pleos interaction, this upgrade is really something special. Andreivic, you seem a trifle new here. People have been complaining since the beginning, and well, many of the folks who had problems with the company (myself included) have ceased with their complaints. Just give it some time, man. Ugobe is really a great passionate company.

I can't complain here :) 1.1. is wonderful. I finally had a full battery charge with it now. He doesn't walk in circles waiting for a wall to show up. He actually turns when he hears something or just because he wants to.
Besides, I find it totally lifelike when a animal stops interacting with his owner, because something else caught his attention. A dog would run away from his owner, who's petting him, if he sees a cat running across the street.(Just to come back to what andreivc said.)

yeah, I agree any animal would run away if something else got its attention.
However, in my case when pleo suddenly stops interacting and backs up is because it suddenly interprets my hand as an obstacle.. in the middle of petting, etc. it's like he is "yeah, pet me, yeah, I am really enjoying it, yeah, keep scratching! and then "WOW! What's that? A wall? I don't like it! Must back out of there! " :D you know what I mean. Not very realistic, and breaks the illusion of a living creature...:(

Ugobe, please make some kind of believable transition or something between petting and exploring...

Immitating AI isn't something easy to do, hardware or software. They did (in my opinion) do a great job on the hardware. But i 100% agree with you on the main points of discontent. As a developer, i had similar issues making my "bad guys" in my 3-d game walk aorund objects that blocked it... took quite many lines of code to make it look realistic. The Pleo has a number of other limitations as well - it doesn't know whats around until it gets there (bad eye-sight), and, it's got a limited space internally to store code.
Most of what you described though seems to just be "bugs" in new code. give it some time, i'm sure a future 1.2 patch will take care of some of them.
PS: to be completely honest, the quote above, i find funny. once i get settled with the PDK, maybe i'll try and make that my first "challenge".

Hey, Ugobe Team, it would be very nice of you to release PDK as soon as possible, and whatever else source code that is needed, so that people like Pleopet, Shagz and others can start working on alternative personalities for the Pleo community. It's only going to make things better for Pleo and your bottom line. When is the PDK going to be released? What about the next OS update date? Even rough time estimates will be appreciated.
Thanks

I dont know, all these shortcomings kind of give pleo a kind of beat up "steampunk" charm. You know, its almost like he was like thrown together and we're putting him together as we go on :p

But complaining about it's shortcomings makes it more likely that Ugobe will release the code....

I would be afraid I would screw something up. I mean, its practically a parellel for brain surgery. I mean, what could we do with the code? Could we give his eyesight a boost? His hearing? I mean besides write new behaviors. I mean, the PDK will supposedly allow us to mess with his moods and stuff, but what good would releasing the intrinsic code do? I dont think Ugobe will do that. They seem to have a specific goal they're working towards, and I really dont see them releasing something as vital as Pleos code.

your Pleo is born with the 0.0 like all pleos, till you'll update him to 1.1.;)

actually, every Pleo that is being shipped out now is updated. When you connect him to the updater, it will tell you which version you are running.
