View Full Version : MySkit v1.3 Performance Editor for PLEO
dogsbody
01-06-2008, 09:33 PM
I'd like to announce a new PLEO tool: PleoSkit!
A performance editor for creating custom PLEO dances or skits! What is a PLEO skit? Skits are things such as dances, tricks, leg waves, tail wagging, etc...
Generally, anything PLEO does other than walking is a skit. Skits controls PLEO's body movement & sound.
You can create & edit skits. There is a reference library of motions to work from, and you easily program an SD flash card to see PLEO perform.
Anyone familar with my Skitter tool (for AIBO's) should hopefully feel right at home.
Enjoy!

That's the beauty of John and AiboPet's (PleoPet's) tools...they use their knowledge to make a program that let's the average Aibo owner, or in this case Pleo owner, create nifty little dances and personalities for their robots even with very little programming know-how! Keep up the great work! and thanks!!!

Can anyone comment on how this works....
Is this like the Holiday Pleo - where the Pleo's normal actions are overwritten by the skit(s) on the card while the card is inserted in Pleo?
Or will the skits on the card be added to Pleo's normal functions - perhaps overwriting outcomes when certain stimuli occur - but only while the card is in Pleo.

If it works like the aibo tools, as PleoSkit is today, it creates things like the Holiday Pleo. Once PleoHack completes YAPT, you can build more complex personalities and add your skit to the normal functions.

Thanks so much for sharing this! I can't wait to try this out with my daughter. She was really excited about the Holiday behavior download so I know she'll love creating her own little Pleo shows. Thanks again!:)
OMG this is so much fun I am currently doing a dance routine with a full song! wow. Pleo's speaker is pretty loud and I love watching him jam! All to the tweaks that I did! Woo!
Might I add I love the feature where it tweaks your movements if its too much stress for the servos. COOL!!

I have a few questions:
- How did you manage to make this, since the SDK is not yet available?
- What will the SDK give us that this can't? If the SDK is just a set of documentation that tells you how to program Pleo, I assume you know all of that in order to produce this.
- Will the SDK give you some more information that you can use to further develop the skit editor?
Thanks!

I used PleoSkit.
Though not supported by Ugobe PleoSkit is available at: http://www.dogsbodynet.com/
Remember you're using this program at your own risk, but I had to try it.
I can't answer any of your questions about the Pleo SDK (PDK). I only know what I read here.

> - Will the SDK give you some more information that you can use to further develop the skit editor?
(I would describe it the other way around, PleoSkit greatly increases the power of the SDK/PDK)
Once released, the SDK/PDK will give you more options of using skits created by the skit editor.
In the mean time you can create simple test programs with PleoMap (built into PleoSkit) and slightly more complicated personalities using the soon-to-be-released YAPT.
If you spend time today creating fun-and-entertaining skits, your effort will not be lost. The skits are stored in standard file formats that will be used in a number of programming tools in the future, including custom programs written using Pawn and the SDK/PDK.

ONE thing is a bit annoying: the eyes and mouth movements are somehow connected and when i try to make the mouth right, the eyelids go crazy and often show red curves...fixing the eyelids again makes the mouth curves red, it drives me crazy.
dotyj
01-10-2008, 02:35 PM
What I did was do my mouth movements and waste movements first. Each movement start and end point creates sort of a movment waypoint.
I then set other movements to work within these waypoints if needed there.
So I did mouth, then waste, then tail wag, then tail up down, then eyes, then neck side to side, then neck up and down.
I should have done eyes last.
I don't know if this is a limitation in PleoSkit or in Pleo itself.

Actually only reason I made em is because that is the one thing I could not find in the library is walking forward and backwards. This file is just normal walking. If it's already in the library no need to download, just please point me to where they are. :)

Once you've created a skit, save it to disk (on your PC), then click the "Write" toolbar button.
MySkit will then initialize an SD flash card for you. Once the SD card is written, turn off PLEO, insert the card, turn him back on and enjoy.

The Babe Zip comes with YAPT and the (older) Pleo3D preview program.
You don't need the 'yapt01.zip'. I'll make that clearer in the tutorial.
Start with the Babe personality and use the YAPT that comes with it.

Cool application, unfortunately I have a Mac.
Will you ever port the app for Macintosh?
Matteo
dogsbody
01-27-2008, 06:37 PM
Sorry, a native Mac port really isn't likely. However, you should be able to run MySkit (formerly PleoSkit) on a Mac using Parallels or VMWare Fusion.
Neither package is free unfortunately (~$80), but they support running virtual machines so you can run Windows under MacOS. Basically you'd be running both MacOS & Windows simultaneously.
Windows would run on MacOS as an application. You'd then install MySkit on that copy of Windows & should be in business.
There may be free packages available which do the same thing, but I'm really not familiar with Mac freeware. Sorry I can't offer more help.

If you have an Intel Mac and the latest OS you can also dual boot your system through BootCamp.
I keep an old laptop around for Skitter and now PleoSkit though, and I do mean old. You could probably pick up one capable of running this software rebuilt for cheaper than the Pleo itself if you wanted to. :)

Well, you're not alone. :)
However, realize a virtual machine is totally isolated from OSX. It's a sandbox for Windows to play in, and appears as another machine on your home network.
In any case, a few minutes on Google also turned up CodeWeavers at http://www.codeweavers.com. They claim to support running Windows programs directly on X86 based Mac's. There are a number of caveats & requirements, and possible compatibility issues.
They offer a 30 day trial download so perhaps you'd consider that approach & letting us know if it works? Running MySkit in a Win98 bubble might be all it takes.

Lobo, do not copy the *.pleo file onto an SD card.
Use the MySkit toolbar "Write" button instead.
Please refer to this tutorial: http://www.dogsbodynet.com/myskit/tutorial3.html

VM managers USB support is pretty good these days. VMWare specifically mentions USB support, even for VMWare fusion on Mac's. No guarantees of course, and personally I've only ever tested USB thumb drives.

MySkit runs on your PC (not PLEO). You use it to create custom PLEO dances & performances/skits. The skits are stored in *.pleo files, again on your PC.
To initialize a flash card for PLEO, use MySkit's "Write" toolbar button. This compiles your *.pleo files and writes the needed resource info to the flash card.

PleoPet
02-22-2008, 11:53 AM
Not the versions from the official sites. They are standalone programs that don't change anything permanently. Remove the SD card and everything is back to normal.
However, it is possible someone may write a virus or evil program that may harm your Pleo when run.
Since the Pleo is physically isolated from your computer, you have to download any program, put it on an SD card, and run it in Pleo. Only run programs downloaded from websites you trust (advice applies to Pleo as well as everything else).

Yes it is technically possible, but it hasn't happened yet, and hopefully never will. IMHO: someone with skills to write a virus should spend their time writing useful Pleo software.
Viruses or malicious programs are possible in almost all devices that have upgradable software/firmware.
The risk is small, but if you are still worried: Always practice safe computing. Don't download software from websites you don't trust.

I'd like to announce an update to MySkit Performance Editor!
This update adds compatibility with the new PLEO LifeOS 1.1.
UGOBE made significant updates to the PLEO firmware in LifeOS 1.1. Unfortunately, it is no longer compatible with older PLEO personalities (*.urf files).
However, all is not lost! The latest MySkit can make newer compatible *.urf files.
To update your skits, see the following tutorial:

Apart from PLEO's personality, UGOBE also upgraded PLEO's script engine. PLEO needs to read (or page) portions of the personality scripts on demand. In the older version they added paging themselves. However, the newest Pawn script engine natively supports paging.
Instead of forever manually customizing the script engine, they opted to adopt the native mode.
From my standpoint, I needed to recompile MySkit's base Pawn scripts -- which are stored within the *.urf files -- and generate seperate *.urf files for the old & new firmware.

Yes, no worries! Updating skits for LifeOS 1.1 is as simple as rewriting the SD card. No changes to your skit are required.

So let me get this right. If you put a skit on your Pleo's sd card he/she will only be animated according to that skit as long as that sd card is inserted? Is it difficult to use this program?

Yes. You could also have PLEO perform various different skits you create (ie: up to ten). Take out the SD card & PLEO is his old self unchanged.
Is it difficult to use this program?
I hope not! However, there are a series of simple tutorials to guide you through making your first skit & testing it on PLEO. Just in case. :D

Thanks! Downloaded it, used it, loved it. I made a skit where Olympia dances to the Jurassic Park theme song. Can't wait to buy an SD card! XD

Touch his 2 Front leg Sensors and he will walk. But if you move him you will have to touch the sensors again

Make sure you are seating the battery correctly. Sounds like its not fully charged. If you still have problems contact Customer Support.
Its also better to start another thread if you need help and it will get missed in a thread such as this

Welcome Pleo Parent. Remember your little dino is a baby for the first charge. Putting your Christmas sd card in, surely, gave him a work out. Battery will automatically turn off when hot. Try putting the sd card in after you charge the battery again.
Did you name your Pleo?:)

I just downloaded myskit on sunday and made my first skit. Does anyone know the podcast Strongbad Emails? well i used the song Trogdor from that, which is a kind of annoying song but it's funny when you watch it in the show:eyeroll::-D
