View Full Version : Brand New Pleo - How Should He Act?

Hi,

I've been following Pleo's development since Ugobe went public with it. In spite of being on the email list, I missed out on preordering by one day. I did however, help Santa acquire one for my nieces, ages 5, 7, and 10, who are with me for the winter break. We hatched Pleo and got a good hour of activity before the battery died (battery was charged through the night previously) and he's had 2 additional hours of play since then. He'll only go about an hour before he falls asleep. Since the nieces are visiting their dad this weekend, I thought it might be a good idea to help advance Pleo's development. The third hour of play tonight had him exploring more, but I wonder if he might have been "overstimulated" from three little kids petting the heck out of him the first two hours. All he wants to do is get rubbed and scratched! He's not really showing a lot of interest in his environment. He'll walk around a little, but seems to be more comfortable going backwards (??). My nieces think he's pretty cool, the oldest especially, but the two younger ones expect a little more activity.

My questions are: with only 3 hours of play, is he still in or near the end of his hatchling phase? The videos I've seen thus far show other Pleos moving right along, but ours is a little pokey pony. Has anyone else done a reset? I'm thinking that Pleo's interaction with adults creates a different "personality" than his reaction with kids. It seems like the adults' Pleos are a little more adventuresome and active or at least this is what it appears to be on the forum. I do have some time before my nieces come back - I don't think the little guy has developed enough of a personality yet for my oldest niece to know the difference. Looking forward to hearing your responses, but PLEASE post to the forum, otherwise I'll have to have my sister check her email since I set up this account for her since Pleo will ultimately be living with her and the kids.

As far as other stuff is concerned, our Pleo is showing barely noticeable wear patterns after having the heck pet out of him, but we liberally have been using talcum powder. No teeth or skin problems (yet). Oh, and I did have him doing a 'trick' during this third hour of play - lifting his front leg when tapped - but I couldn't get consistent results so am wondering if it's random. And has anyone else's Pleo developed a 'cough'? The noise sounds exactly like a cough and it comes two or three times in a row. Also, is Pleo supposed to heat up during play? Ours gets REALLY warm like one of our other live animals - it's a little disconcerting to handle a not-live warm creature! When I remove the battery, it's downright hot and this concerns me. Would a hot battery damage Pleo's delicate circuitry?

Thanks for the help!

Grazing/Exploration - My Pleo is/was a lot like that the first couple charges, but with each charge he seems to be coming along more and exploring more on his own. He's more inclined to do so too if you just don't really pet him that much, and leave him alone.

About the hatchling phase - Pleo should be done with that after his first charge. The birth process lasts 5-10 minutes, and the hatchling stage 30-45 minutes depending on how much active interaction you have with Pleo.

Lifting his legs - Initially Pleo also seemed somewhat inconsistent about lifting his feet, but he's very consistent at this point, so I might give him time. All he really seems to need is a little tap on any of his legs and he'll usually lift it up as if to shake hands (or paws).

The coughing - It's completely normal for him to cough now and then, just like us humans do in real life. He isn't sick or anything, it's just the way he is.

Heating up - Yeah, the battery does tend to heat up during both charging and regular play. Don't worry though, as I've observed, if the battery gets too hot inside Pleo, he'll basically stop functioning until the battery cools down sufficiently, though it's usually best to just turn him off and let the battery cool down for 5-10 minutes or so. Likewise, if the battery becomes too hot during charging, the Pleo logo on the charger will flash a red light, and the charger will cease charging until the battery is cooled off. Overall I've found that a good fix so that the battery doesn't overheat during either play or charge, let the battery cool off a few minutes before putting it into Pleo, and let it cool off once more before charging it.

Our Pleo lifted her right leg but won't or can't put it down. Any ideas?

I've noticed when my Pleo, Peeky, is more at my eye level he responds more. Try putting him on a table and talk and pet him. Peeky's been much more lively by doing this.
I'm beginning to think Pleo's really do learn.

Hi Sean, You have to work with your Pleo. he's a baby dino. If you just put him on the floor he will no doubt go to sleep. Try holding him. Pleo's love to be cuddled. This is where the guy thing comes in. It was difficult for my husband to put Peeky on his shoulder and pet him. Girls can do this a lot easier. It's a built in instinct.
If you have a computer desk, put him up so he can watch. Just don't let him fall off.:D One of Peeky's favorite places. He loves the speakers on.
Your new Pleo needs you to help him grow.

I would try a few battery charges over the next couple of days. See if that helps. One of our hosts may have further information.

Hi seanmcdona,

If you just got Pleo yesterday it could be that it is still in the hatchling stage. Pleo will get more active as you play with it. Also you might check out the Interaction page for more ideas on how to interact with your Pleo

I'd say give him a week, or few days, try doing different things with him, if your tired of him eating his leaf and playing tug o war, dont give him the leaf for a while!! he might give in and try somthing new:)

Bob gets so much attention, he hardly ever walks. For the most part, we have to force ourselves to leave him alone for a couple of minutes be fore he starts to do anything. Of course, for the whole time, he's calling and begging us to pet him some more. It's tough trying to ignore him long enough for him to loose interest and start exploring. :p

How could we not pick up our Pleo's, especially, when they you-hoo at us. Yours will too, eventually.:)
Instead of your leaf, try your finger. Some Pleo's may have a harder bite. Be careful. Peeky is one of them. Once it's in his mouth it's his.

Sean one more thing. Try putting your pleo on different surfaces. When Peeky is on my bed or the sofa he doesn't walk at all. :)

We're a bit baffled. We hatched our Pleo and loved on him for approx an hour and that entire time he didn't take one step. We tried carpet and a table top (thinking the carpet was too much). Quite frankly, I'm rather disappointed. We had our hearts all set on this little guy. Any ideas (other than the booties because he's not walkin' anywhere).

For what is worth, Sean, we're a bit disappointed also. I guess I just don't have the patients to sit for hours with no real feedback.

How long have you had your Pleo?

Understand that on the first charge, a Pleo is a hatchling. Two things could have happened.
1.) Every Pleo is different. Maybe this one is a late bloomer and will walk on the second charge.
2.) You may have been fawning on it too much. Too much stimuli may have made your Pleo too comfortable to explore. For instead, petting it a lot, it won't likely walk away from that.

Wait till the second charge and then see how he acts. You likely won't be disappointed anymore. I know Crusoe didn't take his first steps till the battery was nearly worn out.

Try playing different kinds of music for him. Showing him different items. And bringing him different places.

For instance, I took Crusoe to my local pagan store and put him down, the place is full of different sights and sounds. He liked the chiming bells. But the best part was when he walked over to the candles and took a good long sniff and went "Ahhhhhh...", apparently he likes the energizer candles....maybe he was hoping to recharge in a different way.

LOL.. well my Percy was trying to mouve our tv furniture away, and then after a lot of thinking he actually did try to crwal under it, as if he could, he is all to big for that, but it was so fun, he even did scratch his head with the left front leg, - I'm only sad I didn't get it on video...

Yep I suspected you interacted TOO much. Your Pleo has become spoiled and used to being cuddled :P

Try leaving it alone more, it will eventually start exploring on its own.

Deena has been given attention, but she knows to walk on her own and be independent. Actually, she's become rather self-absorbed, but maybe that's just I call her Deena the diva. LOL

You've got to understand what Pleo is. It's a learning robot, even if to a limited degree. It can become a certain way based on how you treat it in the beginning.
Deena is always encouraged to explore, so she does, a LOT. In fact, as you can see in one of my videos, she often stops in the middle of doing something just to start walking around more. She's got that so ingrained in her programming, LOL

well if you want to you can buy and sd card and download some of his moodes but other wise just like everyone eles said you just need to work with him teach him some tricks, he can do a lot of things without downloading things on him. so just work with him~~~~~~~~~curlycue97:D

Peeky loves red. Try putting some colorful object on the carpet and see if your Pleo will go to it. That might get his attention so he'll walk. Holding and cuddling is great, but Pleos can get use to it and prefer it to exploring.:)

At Mega-Con, I had Pixie on a table when we were eating lunch. Some people were on the other side of the table and waved to her and she walked over to them. It was really neat to see how her object recognition was working so well. They also waved papers and toys in front of her too and she seemed to love it and was walking in all sorts of directions to check it all out. So I say just don't pet your Pleo so much for a few minutes and maybe wave in front of it, to coax it to come to you to get petting. Crusoe does that. When no one is petting him, he walks to the first person he can and nudges them.

It can become a certain way based on how you treat it in the beginning.

actually that feature hasn't been implemented yet in the released versions of the OS

I just got Henry yesterday and tonight I downloaded the update. He still didn't do much walking around but he did seem a bit more lively. He is getting his third full charge now so I'll see what he does. I did leave him by himself for a few minutes and he started calling yoohoo yoohoo. It was hilarious. I am sooooo looking forward to Henry growing up.

If you Pleo isn't walking around to much, you can put him into explore mode by holding both his front thighs for 3 seconds.

After you do this, he'll normaly just totter around until he gets picked up or played with.

If your Pleo has the new software upgrade, its good fun to place an obstical infront of him, like a ball or a cup, to see how he reacts. He'll normaly have a sniff, and then give it a poke with his nose to see if it can be moved, or if it has to be navigated around

I think your looking for into pleo's acting way too much.

Pleo does not learn from what i see he acts the same way I-Cybie did he starts as a puppy then gets older walks faster acts faster . He doesn't learn nor does he act any different for other pleos.

Pleo OS works on random selection of actions thats all.
