Excellent news PleoWorldHostCami i can't wait to get extra batteries. I'm actually quite fine with just the one battery at the moment as the charge lasts about 1hr 45mins when playing with pleo.

It would be perfect if this site had a purchase area for additional items such as an extra Battery, charging station and the SD Card. I just get into interacting with my Pleo and he freezes letting me know his battery is dead. Or I just get into showing him off at a Party and then his battery dies. Just like when you purchase a remote control car or drill you should automatically have the option to purchase an extra battery and/or docking station. The book indicates to go to your local electronics store for the SD Card but it would be easier just to be able to find everything you need at one shop stop which should be www.pleoworld.com. It says to check www.pleoworld.com for specific suggestion on SD cards but I couldn't locate those suggestions. What do others think? Does anyone know where I could go for SD Card information and where to purchase the extra battery and charging station? It says I'll need the SD Card to download files to my Pleo and I want to asap.

I have notice that when I charge Pleo’s battery I have to keep an eye on it because It will keep charging when it is green and overheat the battery.
My suggestion is to redesign the charger to make an alert sound when the Battery is full. Two reasons to avoid overheating and possibility os burning it and to let us know when it is charged

UGOBE thought of this a while ago, but decided not to use the idea.. I can think of a few reasons:)
you could bring pleo into a new room, upstairs etc, and say the charging station was in a different place in the house? plus pleo isn't the fastest of the dino's:)
since it is so hard to not go pet and cuddle with pleo, he may have trouble getting to his charging nest with all the distractions, people cuddling, petting him, obstacles in his way.
though the charging nest may be a part of the pleo future.. who knows:)???

Hi,
I recently read that the extra batteries for Pleo will be available around June of 2008. However, the price you have assigned is pretty steep at $50. I know there is probably a good reason for this, but I suggest you offer a discount coupon for Pleo Members.
This would be one suggestion.
Another suggestion is for $50 the batteries would be improved with a longer run time. Please consider my suggestion.
Consider this, how many families or kids can afford $50 today, in this economy, for an extra hour of run time ?
Thanks for listening.

I agree. Perhaps the extra battery option is taking so long because they are dev/testing a different type of battery that will have a longer run time.

Pleo is pretty good, but not enough!
The prevail Li-Ion battery should be adopted for the sake of popularization of Pleo. A long-life battery WITHOUT MEMORY EFFECT should be a core factor to support Pleo to simulate a lively pet instead of 1-hour playing after 4-hour recharging.
UGOBE may consider to make the battery replacement solution as cheap as possible so that more and more people will feel it's like a real pet that can accompany them at least half day then you will sell more Pleo significantly; on the contrary, you make money from the toys/tools/decorations when the fans want to spend money to customize their lovely pets more personalized.

Acceptable pricing could be around $20 for one extra battery set. Otherwise if you want to charge more, it would be smarter to consider the prevail Li-Ion battery that is being commonly used for cellphones as a long-life battery without memory effect should be a core factor to support Pleo to simulate a lively pet instead of 1-hour playing after 4-hour recharging.
Marketing-wise, the battery with only one hour life is a big reason for users to deem that Pleo is a toy rather than robotic pet with artificial intelligence. UGOBE will find out that it's worthwhile making people treat Pleo as a real pet with several affordable batteries because master spend a lot of money for the pets apart from essential battery supply.
UGOBE may consider to make the DIY battery set frameword so as to users could even use the normal AA cells as emergent replacement.

AA as emergency battery source is a good idea. Make a case that holds AA batteries that fit inside the battery compartment. The only thing is sometimes regular batteries can make the product more sluggish. Example is some of the 1/18 scale rc cars use regular batteries as stock. When you upgrade to a rechargeable battery you can see the diffrence in performance.:)

Given that it is necessary to completely run Pleo's battery down before recharging to avoid decreasing the capacity of the battery, I think it would be a good idea if the charger incorporated a discharge facility - these are quite common in Nimh chargers these days
Maybe design a smart charger device like I-Cybie

I feel that the price of the new battery at $50 is steep. What would be fair is that a coupon is sent to Pleo Members that would reduce this price or that the extra batteies are improved for longer run times (e.g. LiPo's).
We all waited a long time for Pleo and the wait for the extra batteries (sometime this summer) is quite a long time in order to have pleo run longer. We should get something out of this. I hope other feel this way.
Point to Ponder: Is $50 really worth it for an hour more of run time ?

Any news from Ugobe on whether the LiPo battery they shipped to Taiwan work well, and will they be made available in the US?

I think it's crucial for the sense of "life form" to have a spare and better lasting battery. Having only 2 hours with a Pleo and then waiting for a battery to charge for 3 or 4 hours kind of kills the whole experience. Word gets out about that and future sales could be in jeopardy. I understand that Ugobe need to get a good sales list happening in order to generate income for further Pleo development and implementation, but making those spare batteries available asap is important to all of us Pleo owners. As for the $50 price, well I don't think that's so steep to be honest.

Neon only got 2 hours from his first charge, now he only gets 1 hour which is pretty lousy. Ugobe have done such a great job at creating Pleo now all they need do is find a better battery... or release extra batteries pretty soon.

Ugobe made a lot of compromises trying to increase it's efficiency (such as decreasing the number of motors, using a single motor for eyes and mouth, etc.) somewhere online there was an article about it. THey also considered lipo's but had a dangerous situation where one of the prototype batteries exploded and burned. And, because of that, reconsidered using Lipo's out of safety concerns.
I personally would be satisfied with some kind of teather (umbilical cord solution), because my Pleo usually runs on my desk and doesn't go anywhere, so I don't mind him being kindof like "on a leash," plugged in most of the time. But I know this won't work for many, because many people want to see pleo explore.
Another idea is rethinking Pleo's skin. I am confident that all this rubber generates a lot of resistance for Pleo's motors. Using something light instead of it would increase battery life. I wonder for how much longer skinnless pleos run on each charge?
And, of course, I agree that having extra batteries would be nice. Sometime soon someone will figure out to resell those batteries that come back with defective pleos. Or, perhaps, some entrepreneural chinese factory somewhere will start pumping out a cheaper version of a battery for pleo - the demand is definetly there.

From an email I received from Ugobe today they expect to release extra batteries around May 2008
More information about purchasing additional batteries for your Pleo will be available on www.UGOBE.com by May 2008.
Let's hope so, and let's hope it's not limited to purchases only in the USA.

I don't care where the battery comes from just as long as we can ALL get a spare. It's killing me that I can't take Neon out very far because his battery only lasts for such a short while.

I know this has been requested a lot of times - but I figured the more people started a thread about this the qucker UGOBE may get the extra batteries out there. I for one would definately buy another maybe even 2. Spare batteries must be put on sale soon as the useful lifespan of the current ones are only about a year from the first charge and some people area already a third of the way through this now!!

Mark, the battery life should start to degrade in 2-3 years. I believe that the useful life of the current batteries is around 3 years.

My first time post is a suggestion? Oy, sorry. n_n;
I love Sunny. I've only had him a day, but he already has a collar and nametag. The only problem is that I want more time with him! So... I intend to buy batteries. A fair number of them, even. I dream of being able to have my pleo awake for nearly a half-full day, only paused by battery changes.
The only problem with my Grand Master Plan is that while I could theoretically have eight batteries, I only have one charger. So either I have to make a 'charging day' where I flip out the batteries, or I wake up every three hours in the night to change them out. Frankly, both of those ideas sound a little painful.
But if I could buy chargers too?? Oh wow! I could just have a powerstrip tucked away somewhere, with all the chargers hooked up, and I could have Sunny up and about during the day and just plug the pile of batteries into a pile of chargers every night.
For those slightly less enthusiastic, if you only bought two extra batteries/chargers, you could get three hours out of your pleo for every three hours charging. Sounds like a plan, right?

I'm with you on the chargers. I actually thought we'd get a charger with the extra batteries when we bought them. It would be much nicer to be able to have each battery on a charger just waiting for you.

Please release a battery cartridge that will accept standard NiMH AA batteries. That way we can charge them in whatever charger we already have, slip them into the cartridge and pop the cartridge into our Pleos.
This would allow us to keep several sets of batteries charged and ready to put Pleo to play

Pleo can only exploring for 1 and a half hour, then I have to recharge the battery again, this is too short, I think the battery should last at least 4 hours for each recharge, the play time is too short.:(

Extra batteries are now available (yay!), but the option to purchase an extra charger would be nice. Then, if someone decides to get more than one spare battery, they can charge them simultaneously and keep their Pleo going longer.
If UGOBE doesn't decide to sell SD cards, at least those are easy to get in stores and online. Look around and you'll find some real bargains, particularly for the smaller SD cards (1GB or less).
Oh, can I put in a suggestion that spare training leafs would be a good thing? :) I just looked where I THOUGHT the I left the leaf, and it's nowhere to be seen. However, as I share this house with two cats and a husband, anything's possible. Hubby is working late, so I can't ask him if he moved it, and the cats aren't telling. But it IS kind of cat-toy sized, so there will always be the possibility that the Resident Felines will try to co-opt it.

If UGOBE determines that the lithium (-ion or -po? I'm not sure which) battery made by Ucube does last longer and is a viable option for Pleos, then I would love to see the Ucube battery made available for sale to Pleo owners in other countries. Right now, it's only available to the people who buy Pleos in Hong Kong and Taiwan.
Here's a link, which I also borrowed from the thread on the battery forum.
http://www.taipeitimes.com/News/biz/archives/2008/01/24/2003398654
I know that the Ucube battery requires a different charger than the NiMH battery that came with the Pleo, and that each kind of charger can only be used to charge its own kind of battery. So if UGOBE offers the Ucube batteries, they'll have to make the Ucube charger available as well. So while I'm suggesting that I'd like the longer-lived lithium battery, I might as well suggest that I have the charger that I can charge it in. ;)
