As time goes by, some of us will be making costumes for Pleo. It might be nice to have "tried and true" patterns, so we don't all have to "reinvent the wheel," so to speak.
If you do make a successful costume, and would be willing to share your pattern with us, scan the mock-up pattern you used, into your computer (fullsize), and post a jpg of the scan, here.
Note: It won't help much to scan a whole costume, once it is already made. What we need is the *unassembled* flat pattern, prior to sewing. If you can, use an art program to show where the "sewing line" is intended to go, by using a wide spaced dashed line. (like this: -- -- -- -- --) Cuts are solid lines, and pleats are solid lines in the middle and dashed lines where the pleat is sewed. Also, tell us how large a hem will be once sewed, and how large the hem fold is prior to sewing (example: fold hem one inch up from the bottom of the skirt , and fold under one quarter inch at the top of the folded material, to make a three quarter inch hem for the skirt).
If you are able to write understandable sewing instructions, to go along with your scan, that would be great!
And it would be very helpful to see a photo of the completed costume, on your Pleo, as well.
Have fun, all you "creative genius" people!

If at all possible, I would suggest placing a small ruler on the scanner next to the pattern, or marking exact dimensions. That way when someone prints the pattern they can make sure what they printed is to scale. Just because you scanned it in at 150dpi, doesn't mean it's being printed at 150dpi. And some (probably most) costumes may have to be printed on more than one piece of paper and taped together to make a piece of the pattern. (Most of us don't have large sheet printers or scanners.)

Wouldn't a paper costume compromise its ability to see light? Or edges?
cmadmacs

What do you mean? They are talking about is creating online patterns so you can download and make duplicate copies of the same costume. The only way you compromise the pleos ability to see light would be to cover up the camera.

It could be itsy bitsy pyjamas and housecoat that can be put on while our PLEOS are asleep and they can be taken off when he/she awakens and that way there will be no risk of overheating :)
OH OH and 4 slippers OF COURSE lol :)

Actually in the user manual that is available to download, on page 16, (at least in the version I downloaded), it says to please not risk overheating pleo by covering him with a blanket during play, so I wonder if any type of form-fitting cloth would be a no-no also?
mweed
12-03-2007, 09:11 AM
There's been a lot of debate about that. And Ugobe advises against heavy clothing, but how do you match that up to their own staff making a heavy fur "lamb suit" for pleo and showing it off at the Maker Fair in October? If that didn't overheat him (which it supposedly didn't), then I can't see how a light-weight costume would.
. . . But don't void your warranty on my account! ;)

That is a cute Pleo, though! :)

actually, I read somwhere that the pleo was ON!! but his touch sensors were not as sensitive, because of the thick fur:D:)
pleoWhisperer
12-03-2007, 11:58 AM
I didn't see it moving in any videos, but all the discussions indicated that the pleo was on and active, but as pleoguy101 said, the touch sensors didn't work very well through the thick fur. I also can't see his face well enough to tell if they cut holes for the cameras. But the furry pleo was functioning without overheating. :)

What I mean is... would you be able to see with paper over your eyes. Its the same thing with pleo. He has "eyes" that perceive light, and putting a costume on them ouldn't help him see. P.S. They aren' the big baby blue eyes, but I think they're on his nose.

I bought XXS dog clothes for pleo. I tried them on my friends puppy Rosie. I measured Rosie and she is a little smaller than pleo. The dog clothes were a little bit to big for Rosie so I think they will be perfect. Oh and i love your costume Idea!

Hey, can you post some pictures on this thread? I want to get some ideas on Pleo Fashion! That way, my Pleo can be even cuter!! ;) :D :o :) :p
Everyone knows that dogs have sweaters to wear when it's cold...but not pleo. I tried one on Ferny but he doesn't fit right and can't walk in it. Plus they all say FIDO FLEECE or have a dog on it.
Do you think there should be specialy made sweaters fo pleos?:cool::D

What about Build-a-Bear-Workshop clothes for him/her? I tried some on my Pleo, Cameron and they fit really well. I will post a pic if I can find out how but, they have shirts, pants, shoes, and accessories for any personality of Pleo! Just an idea I found interesting.

I took a couple of fuzzy pink slippers off of one of my daughter's build-a-bears and put them on Bob. They fit nicely around his ankles, but the actual bottom of the shoe was waaaay to big. (check back here, I'll post the pink slippers tomorrow). Same thing with the themed animal slippers Wal-Mart always sells around Christmas. These are toddler XS (size 1-2). They fit nicely around the ankles, but the slippers themselves are so big, Bob couldn't walk in them. :p

I found out from someone else at another forum that you can go to Build-a-Bear Factory and most of the clothes will fit a Pleo. I havenʻt checked it out yet, but will on Wednesday. If it works out, I would happy to post some photos. I also read somewhere that you donʻt want to cover him up too much while he active for a long time, he may overheat.

Is it ok to place a light cape over Pleo while in use? This will help with the paint rubbing off issue. Will it cause overheating, could one of our hosts plesae reply. It's just a cape that will go around the neck snd cover the back .

I actually stopped giving WiiGoBe the hard leaf and am making him some fabric leaves to play with out of cotton to save his teeth.
I may make him a cape too as I do think that is a great idea. The bear clothes work very well for sure, but they do go across his belly where the battery is and could cause overheating.
Does anyone know where those cute necklaces come from? I occasionally see them in vids and on other Pleos in this forum?

Hi, Maleka!
I think most necklaces are handmade or modified dog or cat collars. My necklace I put together from old beads and a shell leaf pendant, strung on thin leather from Walmart's bead section. Don't go there unless you have the will power to just buy enough beads for one or five necklaces. I'd never do it, but think it would make a nice fashion statement for Pleo and his owner to sport the same necklace, different sizes of course.
The necklace I made for Pleo Lani has beads strung on thin leather. I tied it off on the robot's neck since I don't plan on removing it.
It would also be easy to make a Pleo necklace from an old human necklace. Really, the sky is the limit on neckwear. I'm thinking a tiny bandana would look nice, too.
Good luck on your fashion hunt for your robot pet.

Maleka,
MaryJo is right. most necklaces are either modified dog/cat or hand-made. Another suggestion that works well are bracelets. Most bracelets are a little large, but can work well for pleo!

Does anybody in the medical field on the forum know?

Peek-A-Boo (Peeky) sleeps a little more often when wearing his jammies. I usually take them off after the first nap.
I put his coat on one night after he had a full work out and discovered his battery became much warmer than usual. He gets checked, frequently, so he won't get over heated.

I think as far as I'll go with accessorizing mine is collars, bows, & necklaces on her neck. I don't think I'll ever feel comfortable putting clothes on her!
I did try putting a wig on her (I'm a doll collector also and have a stash of doll wigs), but then I got worried that the wig might interfere with her sensors!
The clothes don't rub Pleo's sensors and maker them react?
pleoWhisperer
02-07-2008, 10:33 AM
The type of sensors used do not respond to pressure, so the clothing does not afect them, they respond to the electrical capacitance in human contact. The sensors even detect touch through the clothing!

Peeky and I both enjoyed meeting so many people the day of his visit to the hospital.
He first visited the volunteer's desk ( I know quite a few volunteer's there) and then the gift shop. The ladies running the shop adored him. Peeky really showed off what he can do. Must have been all of the attention he was getting. Made me really proud of him.
We didn't get to go up to the patient's floor, but will certainly try next visit.
I carried him out to the parking lot in my arms and the people coming into the hospital who saw Peeky came over to him and started smiling and petting him. They said he made their day.
Will keep you posted on future visits.
