View Full Version : Why do you think Ugobe made a camarasaurus?

Why did Ugobe make a camarasaurus and not like a triceratops or a raptor? I think they would be just as cute.:) And Ugobe should make more kinds of Pleo's. All would they have to do is take pleos brain or something and add a different body and sound system. So why not?  :D

That is still my hope that Ugobe will make other dinos for Pleo to play with. But to answer your question, Ugobe has answered that questionby stating that they picked the camarasaurus because it was well suited for "robocizing". That is, it was about the right physical size, had a naturally shorter neck/tail than other sauropods, and had a big head that could hold a lot of the electronics.

Lots of things factored into the decision to use Pleo for the first life form. Some have already been mentioned. We can imagine some more of them:

Several dinosaurs walk on two feet instead of four feet. Balance is easier to achieve with four feet on the floor. That would figure into a decision for a first robotic life form. Easier is better, for the initial critter.

Part of the decision rested in Ugobe's idea of attractive, and what they thought their target audience would find attractive. They wanted their first critter to be appealing to the widest audience. Pleo has that appeal.

Some dinosaurs have lots of extra spikes, horns, mantels, etc. Those all affect balance, weigh more, and cost more to make. Sleeker is better, for a first creature.

Perhaps they wanted, also, to make sure they didn't step on any copyright toes. So a baby dino that looked like it was inspired by Dinotopia, for instance, would be wise to avoid for the first critter. It would be wise to avoid looking like they took a competition's robot, and just put skin on it. Unique is better for a first creature.

[But once Pleo is out for a while, the next dino could be the same species as a Dinotopia baby dino (as long as it had some physical uniqueness of design) and no one would say anything, because it would be the second dino in a series of new life forms.]

Ugobe wanted children to feel comfortable playing with their life form. That includes girls. The choice to go with a plant eater was a "safer" choice, for appealing to both boys and girls (as well as the Mommy and Daddy). Safe is always better, for a first life form.

I could go on, but you get the idea. It wasn't any one thing. It was lots of things, and very carefully considered, overall.

I, for one, like the choice Ugobe made. :)

Forget Dinotopia, my fist thought when I saw Pleo was that they were trying to leverage off of the Land Before Time market and the appeal of the main character Littlefoot, the young "long-neck" dinosaur. Now, that may not be the case, but there is the obvious connection that might step on someone's copyright toes.

Pleo isn't a Brontosaurus. He isn't brown. His neck is short, not long. He is modeled on a real Camarasaurus skeleton. His body isn't shaped the same, and he walks different. He doesn't speak any words.

My take: Totally a new and unique idea. No possible infringement. :)

I agree Amjoie that pleo is a new concept. Also not having a remote is a cool idea. I bet some of the other toy robot makers are wishing they would have thought of it first. My opion is that pleo will be a huge success.

Perhaps because of a camarasaur's real head size (which is big) gave Caleb many chances to cram Pleo's head with high-tech things. Also UGOBE might've wanted to let people have the opportunity to have a pet that does not exist anymore.

Technically, its Apatosaurus. And Apatosaurus are not copyrighted by Amblin, Universal or Don Bluth. So it was free to use. Pleo likely couldn't walk like Littlefoot walks. Littlefoot's animated walk often has his feet turning in, nearly touching and stepping on each other. And Pleo does say "ta da". I am sure a PleoSkit can be done to make him use the Littlefoot voice though.

Besides all the listed reasons...Camarasaurus are also one of the most popular fossils found in the US. They were likely the wildebeest of the Late Jurassic. Also, oddly enough, there are very few fossils of young Camarasaurus. Paleontologists believe that either, Camarasaurus grow quickly into adulthood or their herds were so protective that they almost always grow to adulthood. Its hard to say though.

Had I not heard that there really was a dinosaur, camerasaurus, I would have thought Pleo has a camera on him , that's where the name came from.
Glad to learn about dinosaurs.

, I didn't word this correctly. I meant that Pleo does have a camera built into his nose.
That's also why camerasaurus would be a good choice of dinos.to model Pleo from. Just a thought.
Sorry for the confusion

Actually, I havenʻt been in grade school for some time, and didnʻt remember the camarasaurus as being part of the dino era. Thank you, Siren, for the info. At first glance, I thought Pleos resembled the brontosaurus.

IMHO, yes, I think Ugobe picked this dino for a Pleo because his body and head could hold more sensors (great for us). Pleoʻs size was also a gift to us, teaching us how small they were as hatchlings growing into a 60 foot adult! Makes my husband think about the movie "WaterHorse", and how tiny he was, and when set free in the bay to the ocean, grew beyond the movie screen!

The ʻplumpʻ Pleo being so affectionate seems to be very appealing to young and old, even men, so I think Ugobe was looking for their first bot to cover all ages and genders. Then maybe they are thinking of expanding into the more wilder dinos as options. Personally, I would love to see the next dino to be just as affectionate and peacefully co-exist with todayʻs Pleo. We are hoping for something similar the "WaterHorse", but needing no water? He too was adorable as a baby!

I also agree with amjoie. They wanted a dino that was a calm vegetarian to make Pleos more affectionate, though I have seen posts by those who want something a bit more wild, i.e., T-Rex, etc. and are even starting up ʻPleo armiesʻ instead peaceful communities, but then again I am an adult child who loves her toys in a different way.

Sometimes I think a few members are going against Pleoʻs design and are trying to make Pleo what he isnʻt; maybe they should wait for a more wilder dino to be created. IMHO.

I think UGOBE drives to create lifeforms that you wouldn't see everyday, but only in you imagination, like pleo, we dont know what a camarasaurous or any other dinosaur looked like, so pleo is a great thing to have as a pet another dinosaur or a mythical creatyre would also be a great next UGOBE lifeform, but if UGOBE made somthing like a dog or cat, people who buought it would already know how a dog or cat acts and feels, but have you seen a dinosaur sneeze, play tug o war, or smile???!!! not until UGOBE made pleo you haven't :)

They cuoldn't just put on a diffrent skin. It would be shaped diffrent. They would have to move some parts around and program it to respond to diffrent sensors and engines in diffrent places. But if they are ever going to make a diffrent one, why a dinosaur? I think it would be cool to have a Pleo cat or dragon. My little sister wants a panda one just like mine and insists that we can order one. She refuses to except that they don't exist.

I say that they should do an Allosaurus. Here are some reasons why:
Large head to fit excess electronics
Somewhat long neck to wire everything out
Large chest for even MORE electronics
Sloped belly for yet MORE electronics
Sturdy legs and feet to be easily kept on the ground
Long, held-out, tail to keep everything balanced!

Uhg.... Yet another comparison to the T-Rex, which to me completely sucks. How many times do i need to tell people that Allosaurus is an almighty carnosaur whereas T-Rex is a Tyrannosauroid. Now, Guanlong's a fine one, but everyone gives T-rex waaaay too much attention and never focuses on the way more awesome exotic ones, like Allosaurus, Ornitholestes, and Therizinosaurus (My three faves.)
