Question for all Pleo first generation owners.
If UGOBE comes out with a 2nd gen. Pleo w/ improved design (better longer lasting paint, smarter, better battery, etc.) would you buy it? What if it cost a little more money? What are your thoughts about a 2nd gen. Pleo?

Back last June when Ugobe started accepting pre-orders, and limited it to two, I decided it made more sense to buy one of the first hatches, and then wait a year to buy the second, because I assumed there would be a 2nd gen updated pleo. I didn't know at the time what the changes would be, and I still don't know if there really will be a 2nd gen, but I am waiting for one!

Exactly how I'd answer this question. I thought the same thing - I wanted a First Hatch, and I knew then that I'd want a second one, but planned to hold out for a future generation.

Yes but now you can't use the "next generation" logic to justify the purchase of a third! :D

I would love to buy a 2nd generation one. If the price is only $50, I'd deal with it. But much higher than that and it is going even further out of my range

For the third pleo, you use "it was on clearance at Target" or "I got a great deal on eBay" excuse. :p

Aren't we supposed to get a second gen OS pretty soon? At this price I would not buy a second one.

I would hope that Ugobe would issue an improved software update that would have my Eve doing what was expected when I ordered her in October and DID NOT do when I received her in Dec. The first generation should be all that was promised and then a Second Generation could build on that. I enjoy Eve, however she is NOT the Pleo described on the website in September/October which inspired me to fork out $350+ dollars. So I request that Ugobe get it's first generation of Pleos to be comparfable to the "PROMISE" before setting out to create a second generation.

Without hesitation... If all that goes really wrong is the paint, my goodness, such a great baby. There will be lemons in all toys and bots, so I feel very lucky to have learned about the Pleo. WiiGoBe was not only worth the $350, but actually, I thought he was a bit inexpensive for what Iʻve received in three days. Thank you, Ugobe, in making a great baby and also for keeping the cost down. I am shopping for our 2nd Pleo, 1st or 2nd, doesnʻt matter.

I did pay $2,000 for my VII Aibo, totally different technology, but also well worth the money. The joy and laughter Koku and WiiGoBe have brought into our home and to my clients, priceless. IMHO.

Well, I should be recieving my tax check soon and for a few moments, I contemplated buying another Pleo, but I do believe I will wait till the 2nd generation one comes out. Hopefully without the teeth/skin chipping and with the full OS.

Hi sean,

All updates to Pleo in 2008 will be software updates which will also be available online. There is no "second version" of Pleo himself.

I suspect the next generations of Pleo won't have as much access to reprogram them as the first generation has. That is why I chose to go with the first generation. Once Ugobe works out the bugs and decides to create there second generation, they probably will decide not to release the information about the code or have USB slots or SD slots built into the new ones.
My guess is the new generation will be less money. Ugobe first announced that Pleo would only be 199 dollars and actually appeared to be a little embrassed that the cost had to be moved up to 350 dollars. I think the second generation may just hit the 199 dollar mark. They probably will tool it for mass production and the new generation probably won't do as many things as the current one. Some toy company will fund them and the next generations of Pleo will slowly turn into just another anamatronic toy. Look at the Furby, the original furbies looked better and said and did alot more then the last generation furbies. If I remember correctly the last generation furbies even had purple fur.
I see the next generation Pleo with cloth skin, probably purple or orange it will talk to you in a pee wee herman type of voice and will tell your kids stories about his adventures in Dinosaur land, while blinking and laughing. This generation of Pleo is a lesson in Marketability, a how not to example, unfortunately. Ugobe is on the right track of robotic development with this version but I fear the next will find them heading back down the tracks of marketability. We kind of saw it in this version of Pleo, Ugobe started by saying pleo would recharge himself, develop a unique personality based on how you treated him, learned and would recognize your face. When the final product came out, we basically got an anatromic, all be it life like, toy.
The best thing about this generation of Pleo is if you take him apart and price out all his parts, sensors and motors and you get well over 300 dollars of robot componants you can use in other robots.

No.

I want a different sort of product. Currently my fun with my Pleo is to introduce her to others that have not met her. However, I am still looking forward to getting Maxi together with another Pleo. Maxi is on about her 10th hour (10 full discharge/recharge cycles.) I suppose I would be pleased with better/more walking and voice & facial recognition. Still that could get kind of boring.

Now a home assistant would be something I could get excited about. Especially if she had an off switch!

I would buy a second generation Pleo. I'm not technologically savvy enough to really timker with programming or building my own robot, so for me Pleo is very cool as it is. I look forward to seeing what Ugobe does with it down the road. Though I agree it would be disappointing if it developed as the Furby did, into something less special.

Do you really think that a 2nd generation Pleo will me made?
I would be happier if Ugobe just put moe effort into their next creation.

UGOBE said elswhere, that they dont plan to do a future generation of pleos with other hardware.

But how about a new generation of pleos with problems corrected, like the paint, skin, etc?

It would be nice to have a pleo without fading skin and flaking paint (I have had havoc for about a month now and have had NO tooth or eyelid flaking)

I would like to see them perfect Pleo. they need to work out some of the bugs if they want to make their customers happy and come back to buy more of their products. Maybe they don't plan on revamping everything, but now that they are getting feedback from owners, they will hopefully take that info back to their developers and act on it. Just like car companies. The first year of a new car there are always problems, but they don't just throw it all out and start over They refine the original product. Hopefully Ugobe will do the same with Pleo.

Or they could learn from their mistakes and just make sure that the next lifeform does not have some of the problems that Pleo does :)

I also rather see that they focus on seriously improving on Pleo's software.
And I sincerely do not hope that UGOBE will slack down on that once the PDK is released, hoping the community will take it all up and leave it up to them to figure out more features, fixes, fine tuning ect.

Well, if the company does not want to be a one hit wonder they should make sure the Pleo owners are happy, as I'm sure the success (or lack thereof) of Pleo could make or break Ugobe. They have a great thing going here, but alot of people will not be patient with a $350 item that has problems. So they NEED to fix things on this first "lifeform" to ensure good press for future releases. At the current pricetag a lot of people would think twice about a different item at the same pricepoint it they were disappointed with the first item. Unless they are planning on putting their next release out at a much cheaper price. That raises the question too of the appeal of the type of item they will release. I would be curious to know how many people wanted Pleo BECAUSE he is a dinosaur, and how many just like robots in general, how many were intrigued just because of the AI thing.
