When Pleo is attached to the computer via a USB cable:

Will Pleo run off the power of the USB?
Will a switched-on Pleo be active & moving while altering Life OS?
What operating systems is the Life OS softwasre compatible? (Vista, XP, Milenium, 95, Mac, Linux)

I am glad you brought this subject up Kynan. I recall reading somewhere that pleo will come with a USB cable, or maybe it said it might come with the cable, does anyone know if this is true?

Pleo should come with a usb cable for updates but will not charge via it.

Like i-Cybie im gussing you make the custom action on pc & hopefully MAC, then save it to a sd card & insert it into Pleo.

Im guessing their will be a virtual Pleo on screen that will play back the action so you know its right.

The Robosapien & i-Cybie programs work in this way.

even if it *could* charge via USB it would take forever.

Most USB ports don't provide enough current to run power hungry devices or enough voltage for larger battery packs. I know you can download firmware updated via the USB cable, and I know Ugobe has promised a MAC interface, but beyond that, we'll just have to wait and see. Stuff like new sound files and new subroutines supposedly are accessed off an SD card, not USB.

When Pleo is attached to the computer via a USB cable:

Will Pleo run off the power of the USB?

No. His battery needs to be charged during the update process.

Will a switched-on Pleo be active & moving while altering Life OS?

No. When the Update software detects Pleo, he freezes until the update is complete, at which point he "reboots" with his usual wake up sound.

What operating systems is the Life OS softwasre compatible? (Vista, XP, Milenium, 95, Mac, Linux)

The Pleo Updater runs on both the Mac OS X versions 10.4 and 10.5 and Windows platforms XP/Service Pack 2 and Vista. If your operating system is not yet supported by the Pleo Updater (e.g. Linux), you will have two options.

1. If your computer has an SD card reader/writer, you can download the latest version of the Pleo software from the Pleoworld Support page, write that to your own SD card, insert that card in Pleo’s SD card slot, which will automatically update the software.

2. If you don’t have access to an SD card reader/writer, you can contact UGOBE Customer support to request the Pleo Software Update Kit which will be shipped to the home address in your registration. Once you receive the Kit, you can insert that card into Pleo’s SD card slot to automatically update the software.

frantically learning PAWN...there are pleo hacks all over the place, any ideas if hackers have already started writing bad code to make Pleos do...bad stuff? LOL

ok, but i think it would be a good option for people who dont want to fiddle with the finicky charger.....

Also, how were they planning to charge the battery in Pleo before they changed it to a detachable battery?

I can't see charging Pleo's battery pack via USB. You'd have to add an on board battery charger that would only draw 100mA and that would drive up the cost plus at 100mA, as Cami pointed out, it would take too long to charge Pleo.

What about Firewire though? That could handle it.

I see a whole slew of hot rodded batteries coming out in the Pleo aftermarket

My Pleo came shipped with a USB lead and has a USB port.

So far I haven't found what use a USB connection for my Pleo will be. Does anyone know??

From what I understand, the USB port will be for firmware updates, when they come out.

For end-users, the USB port will be used primarily for software upgrades. For developers, the USB port can be used to interact with Pleo - as a CDC device (programmers will know what that means ;-). More details will likely be available around the time of the PDK release.

Thank you,
Tyler

.... and what is the PDK release?.... I was also surprised to find a USB cable packed with Eve. By the way what does the term "first hatchling" refer to?

Hi Lois and Eve, :D

PDK stands for Pleo Development Kit. It will be for those who want to be able to hack and/or program their Pleo and will be available sometime in the first half of 2008.

A "First Hatch" Pleo is one of the first 2,000 Pleo's sold. They came with a special gold ID card.
