This is from the step-by-step how to load a behavior doc.

Does it override his whole system? does it replace an existing one while installed? I'm not sure I "get it".

My hope was that you could add (expand) Pleo's behaviors while keeping existing behaviors intact.

I hope it means it will override whatever behaviour you've changed, instead of growling in a cute little dino way Pleo's dino growl will be overriden with a lion growl, I don't know, something like that I hope. I hope it doesn't override Pleo's whole personality.

pleo's usual personality is the life os. the os (operating system) is pleo's firmware, meaning it's the software built into

him.when you put an sd card with a new program on it into pleo, it loads from the card which overrides the os. pleo won't

be acting with the same behaviors he usually does from the life os, the program will be running directly from the sd

It is recommended that you have an SD card with at least 32MB of available memory. As to brand there is only one known problem at this time and that is with some of the Kingston brand SD cards.

Kingston's Standard 1GB SD cards are made in both Taiwan and Japan. We have been advised that the cards from Taiwan function too slowly for Pleo; therefore, you should look for the Kingston Standard 1GB SD card that's made in Japan.

Please note that these cards are sold under the same part number and have no indication of speed. You may want to contact Kingston directly (http://www.kingston.com/flash/securedigital.asp (http://www.kingston.com/flash/securedigital.asp)) to find out where the Japan-made cards are sold.

As to an SD writer there are no known issues at this time so it will be up to your preference.

It says "a small amount of memory" is fine (suggests 32MB), but it doesn't say if there's any disadvantage or issues with larger sized cards (32MB cards are actually harder to find than 1GB cards nowadays...)
Also it says nothing about recommended speed ratings or suggestions of brands. When I click on the link "here is a link to a site" that sells such cards, my browser opens up a new window of exactly the same page. :confused:

Any relatively new SD cards should work. There are apparently speed issues with very few brands.
Other advice:
Stay away from 2GB or larger "SDHC" cards. 1GB is overkill.
Buy a full size SD card, not a Micro or Mini SD card. You can use Micro and Mini SD cards in Pleo with an adapter, but they are a little more expensive and not as solid as the full sized card.

Touching on Pleo's toosh activates the christmas mode. I've seen Ugobe folks do this in the videos to make Pleo show different expressions. Sad, happy, and scared.

Download it now to your harddrive and you will always have it to load onto the SD card for PLEO...Make a folder just for your PLEO downloads....:o

The download for the SD card has been released and I hope all the Pleo owners enjoy it as much as we have. It's only 819 K of memory. That's not much nowadays. If this little program has given us this much pleasure, we can't wait to see all the future programs that may be a few mega bytes and really show off the possibilities of this unique robot. Hope all of you get your Pleo in time for Christmas. Even if it ships from China it will only take 2 days, so don't give up hope.

Today i want to test the Holiday Personality on him. But it doesnt work.

I habe a 128 MB SD Card and a 256 MB MMC Card for testing. MMC don´t work at all (is it compatible with Pleo anyway ?).
The SD Card inside Pleo Boots Up makes a Dino Noice and the stucks, and making a bit noise Sounds from his Servos, but nothing happens :(

I Formatted the Card with Fat 16 and with Fat 32 and put the urf File on it. Is that wrong ?
Should i use NTSC Format ? Anything important o should know ?

Anyone have an idea ?

NTFS not NTSC :)

Pleo will work with Fat32. Did you change the filename? It's only working if the file is named pleo.urf. Maybe your SD card is not compatible with Pleo, I think there are a few cards out there that will not work... Have you tried a other brand?

I just downloaded mine and it's hilarious! Here are the exact items I used:

2 GB A Data SD memory card
51 in 1 card reader/writer Digital Concepts (Sakar International Inc)--6 slots support 51 memory cards

I know, I know.....instructions say not to use more than 1 GB but I chanced it since I already had a 2 GB SD card.
I can't tell you how marvelous it works. My Tong became a totally, different, creature.

At first, when I did the download, it didn't appear as if it worked because I kept getting a message that it wanted to use
some type of program or other to open the download. But I just happened to look at my desktop and there it was---pleo.urf
This was also my first time using a card reader. I got 4 different areas of space on my SD card to put information so I kept picking each one until one worked. The area that worked was H: I realized that Drive H had the downloaded info on it so I took my SD card out of the reader, placed it in Pleo--turned it on---and the fun began! Wow!

Without spoiling the surprise too much. Pleo turns into Holiday Pleo. But don't worry, he goes back to his regular lovable self when you remove the SD card. :D

As several people have noticed.. the ugobe holiday program "doesn't work".

Answers of "try a different card" have been put out there.... being a bit of a technophile.. I have at the ready 12 SD cards and a couple mini and micro (with adapter).

I could get none of them to work with holiday pleo.
TURNS OUT.. pleo is NOT OSX compatible. .. mac doesn't natively do NTFS / FAT32 formats.

You need to format your card in FAT32. Fat16 just don't do it. There may be cards that work in other formats.. But all of my cards now work using windows to format the card to FAT32. I'm only using the up to 1gb cards.. but they all work. pny.. san disk...edge something with an X on it ATP and Kodak ALL working in various sizes from 32mb to 1gb. Some cameras will do fat32 if you don't have Microshaft Winblows available. I believe most pre-formatted cards are likely in fat32

Poor pleo.. if it only likes windows.. not a good sign.

Worked fine with my Mac as well as five other folks I know with Pleos and Macs... We did have to rename the file by taking off the .txt at the end... for some reason when we downloaded the holiday pleo file it added this to the end making it a text file. When we removed it by renaming the file... all was fine and it ran perfectly....no problems at all.

you probably never reformatted the card. They come pre-formatted. Mine have been used to hold operating systems among other things.. they have long been formatted in .. well anything other than fat32.
If you reformat them.. it seems based on my pretty strong clinical evidence that the formatting is the issue . Though i have experienced some odd cards that don't work with certain hardware.. and there is a new format out there for extra large sd cards that is not fully backwards compatible.

I found a 512 mb sd card at walmart that came with a usb reader. The total cost for reader and sd card together was 19.00 I believe. You can find cheap sd cards on ebay as well. Make sure you don't buy mini sd card.

Card does not need to be blank. The pleo.urf file just needs to be in the root (top level) directory.

sone other posit mentioned that it has to be fat32 compiant or fomated (i'm not up on Fat this or that). MAC's and FAT64 wont work. My fathers new PC was set up on VISTA 64. This is causing problems with ITOUGH, IPHONE and SD cards.

Reformat it "FAT" and try again.

BTW:: Most "SD" cards in the recommended size range will come preformatted as "FAT" (not FAT32). That's because many consumer electronics devices (cameras, PDAs etc) can't handle FAT32.

SD Card speed checking was turned off. There is a special Windows utility that formats SD cards according to Card Association specification. It can be found here: http://www.sdcard.org/about/downloads/sdfv2000.exe (http://www.sdcard.org/about/downloads/sdfv2000.exe)

Give the SD card a slight push "in" and it should then pop out so it is released and you will be able to get ahold of it to remove it.

Push the SD card "in" slightly. This releases the SD card and pops it out slightly so you can remove it.

Good news for all Pleo kind. I reformatted my SD cards using the utility provided and downloaded the Pleo.urf to the cards. IT WORKS NOW! Finally!

My original download of the file was named Christmas Pleo Download.urf. The download is now named Pleo.urf. Have I lost my mind or did UGOBE change the file name?

In any case, UGOBE support, Kurt, was most sympathetic and helpful and interesting to talk to. His excitement about Pleo is very evident in his voice. It must be a great group of people working at UGOBE.

I'm sorry you are having problems with the download and need some more information before we can try to figure out why.

Is this where you are getting the Holiday Pleo download? http://www.pleoworld.com/downloads
Are you signed in?
What is your computer OS?
When you click on "Download Holiday Pleo" do you get a pop up box that asks if you want to "save this file' or "find a program online to open it?" because "Type: Unknown File Type"
If you are getting this or a similar popup then "Save" the file.

Let us know how it's going. :D

The email was sent to help the person with a problem pleo "troubleshoot" or check certain things to see if the pleo would respond normally, or really was broken/defective. My impression from mentions of this email in other threads that Ugobe doesn't want the contents made public to everybody, but only to those with a need. I'm ASSUMING that would be to help promote people to play and explore what their pleo can do. But whatever the reason, I am trying to respect Ugobe's wish, which is why in my original post, I told our PleoWorldHost admins to feel free and remove my posting if I was overstepping their wishes. :p

I'm not sure if I figured it out but when I touched Peeky's left front leg and two back legs and back he raised his front leg and back as if he were pointing like a dog. He let out a ta-da sound.
Has anyone else heard and seen this?

That's what we've been calling the "ta-da trick" (balancing on two legs). :p You get this reaction from touching the left front and right read leg (or right front and left rear). It's mention in several of the threads. Makes a good trick for showing off pleo. :)

Keep trying to get the watchdog mode though. You gotta touch all four sensors at the same time. And remember, you left and his left may not be the same, depending on which way he's facing . . . ;)

Hi all. I managed to get Dusty into Watchdog mode. It's amazing. He'll nod his head about 4 times, making a grunt each time. Then he sticks his head/neck straight out and lifts his right rear leg back a bit, posing like a pointer dog! Once in a while his tail will twitch. HOWEVER, I can walk in front of Dusty, pound my hand next to him on the floor, wave my hand back and forth in front of his nose -- and he WON'T recognize anything. I have to tap him lightly on the front of his nose to get him to move his head and growl. Then he'll repeat the head nodding/posing again. Is there a glitch in this latest trick? He's not much of a watchdog if you have to touch him in order to get a reaction. :confused:

here's how i did it, best as i can describe -- using pleoWhisperer's posted method:

1) from his left side, with his head facing to my left, using my right hand, i place my thumb on the shoulder switch,
2) the base of my thumb/palm down on his rump switch, and
3) reach down with my little- and ring-fingers to touch the rear-right-leg switch.
4) then with my left hand making an L-shape, touch the left-front-leg swith with my fore- and middle-fingers, and
5) touch the left-rear-leg switch with my thumb or base of my thumb.

there might be a pause in there as well; i just kept making the gesture until he started nodding his head up and down.

once he was in mode, i had different results with setting him off and disturbing him. dramatic environment changes like switching the light on in a darkened room brought on instantaneous barking. but many times even drastic movements in front of him were met with only disapproving growls (very cute, anyway...), and there was no reaction whatsoever to sound.

breaking him out of Watchdog mode was as easy as touching him again. that part was a little disturbing, actually... he makes a yelping, startled sound and turns his head quickly, like he was concentrating REALLY hard and it actually hurt to break his concentration.

I had the same problem, then moved my Pleo under better lighting conditions, then it worked fine.

do you have info that it's just "3 ground sensors and the back"? from what was posted previously it was specifically the front-left, back-left and back-right leg plus the back. it was never designated if it was one or both switches on the back, so i was running with the assumption that it's BOTH triggers on the back.

if anyone has any supportive info other than this, please post it!

When you get to the download page ( http://pleoworld.com/downloads ) look for the Pleo with the red hat. The link to download should be right underneath him. If it says to "Log in to Download" then click on that and log in first. :)

I dowloaded the new valenties day pleo into Rocky, and found a blue plush camarasaurous lying on the floor, so I put her next to Rocky.. and he did the love whistle thing:D and he started kissing her:D Rocky lifted his paw up as in waving hi and made a little emmbarrased cry. and softly said to her ( I love you) ah young love, between 2 dinos:D

Originally computer said adobe reader couldn't open pleo.urf because the file is either not a supported file type or it's corrupt .YIKES!!! What does that mean other than I'm a computer dummy?

i can not down load any thing from the pleoworld website. Specifically the love struck pleo. When I click on it, all I see is like programing code. Anyone else notice this? Is it related to the fact that i have a macbook computer?

I'm sorry you are having problems. I know many people with macs downloaded the Holiday Pleo, I haven't seen on the forums yet how many have done the new Love-struck Pleo.

I dowloaded the new valenties day pleo into Rocky, and found a blue plush camarasaurous lying on the floor, so I put her next to Rocky.. and he did the love whistle thing:D and he started kissing her:D Rocky lifted his paw up as in waving hi and made a little emmbarrased cry. and softly said to her ( I love you) ah young love, between 2 dinos:D

Awwww, would have loved to have seen a video of that. I was lucky enough to be holding Cami when I heard the "I love you" and got a kiss. Melted my heart all over again. :D

I totally lost my download. It doesn't appear next to the pleo with the heart. What could of happen to it? Boohoo! Originally computer said adobe reader couldn't open pleo.urf because the file is either not a supported file type or it's corrupt .YIKES!!! What does that mean other than I'm a computer dummy?

I'm not real sure what you are saying here. You downloaded the file to your computer and then couldn't find it or it was there and now isn't?

You don't need Adobe for Pleo. You need some method to get the downloaded file from your computer to an SD card. Whether that be a reader/writer in your computer or an external reader/writer.

Maybe if you can give us a little more information we can help you figure out what is happening. :D

yes its the mac when i attempted to download the xmas pleo it came up as words the mac opens and reads the program rather than allowing to save to computer or sd card i used my dell and a download box comes up allowing to save to computer then you dump from desktop to sd card using the sd card reader i have searched there is no way i can use my mac as far as i can see i dont know if its compatibility or if theres a different setting to set my browser to rather than read leave closed and allow to save file download ill post answer if i find 1...

Download a new version of the Christmas or Valentines file. When you download it tell it to save it to computer not to open it. You must have a default set to try and open whatever you download. If you just save it straight to your computer you should be good. Hope this works.

Hi there,
I just downloaded and used Lovestruck Pleo today on my Mac, so maybe I can help:

1. What browser are you using? I have big problems with Safari wanting to open everything, so I use Firefox. Firefox allowed me to save the file to my desktop, no problem.

2. Be sure that your SD card has been properly formatted. Open Applications>Utilities>Disk Utility to delete everything on your SD card has been properly erased. This is the easiest way on the Mac, since dragging whatever is on the card to your trash isn't enough (you have to empty the trash too).

3. Drag Pleo.urf to the SD card via Finder.

Anyway, I'm betting the browser is the issue. My Mac thinks that urf files need to be opened with Quicktime, which can't do the trick anyway, so it just gives me an error when it tries and saves them manually instead.

i'm on a mac and use Safari and its works fine. You just need to move the file onto the sd card

Hi Degers, I did that. The world was dumping pages into a folder. It appears that the information is being put in a temporary fiolder. This runs for quite a few minutes. How many KB should there be?
Still couldn't open file.

I have an iMac and I was able to download the file. If you can right-click or option-click on the link, you should be able to "save link as..." to your computer.

So I downloaded Lovestruck Pleo, put the card in, and I love it.

But I notice a very distinct difference between Lovestruck Pleo and my normal Crusoe. Fluidity of motion. The Lovestruck Pleo has very very smooth, fluid motions that Crusoe, thought moves great, doesn't have the same look to it.

Is this JUST because of Lovestruck Pleo?
Or is this something we will see with the new OS?

hiya all ive had problems downloading the lovestruck pleo , got it downloaded to my pc, then says it cannot open file, ?? tried to then send it to the card reader to the sd card . It temporarily replaces his normal behavior by having him randomly "sing" one of six Christmas carols. He starts out by saying "Ho Ho Ho" instead of his usual "Huh?". Then just touch any of his sensors to start/stop/pick another song. :)

I finally got my Pleo the other day. I had downloaded both holiday and the lovestruck download for him and tried it out. Much to my frustration I thought it was my card. I searched through all the faq/download instructions/ and really thought it was my card. I am using a 512MB PNY. After hours of reading through the forums I noticed one of the previous ones mentioned the Holiday download being around 800kb. That is when I checked the file I downloaded and it was only about half that. So I redownloaded and it worked. I also redownloaded the lovestruck and it turned out to be twice the size of my previous download. When I downloaded last time I never shut off my computer or lost connection. The files actually came up saying download complete. Looks like I just got a bad download. So if you are having problems you may actually want to try redownloading and checking your file size. A small suggestion for pleoworld. Could you please put on your download page what the finished file size should be? Some people may just be getting bad downloads. For future reference

Holday - 820KB
Lovestruck - 1,141KB

Hope this helps some people out. I have not tried the lovestruck yet but if the size is wrong someone please feel free to let us know. Thanks

Look for the Pleo with the heart baloon and Pleo with the red hat. If you are signed in then under each of those graphics you should see a download link. If you aren't signed in then you will see "Log in to Download" under each Pleo. If you see this then log in to get to the downloads.

I am on a mac and you can download all of the downloads to the mac. I'm not sure what you mean by charging. Also, Only the top-most file on the sd card will effect pleo

Hi anandbec :)

First the behaviors like the Holiday and Valentine's behaviors are software and the LifeOS update is firmware. When you load one of the behaviors like the Holiday behavior on the SD card, Pleo does not remember or "install" the behavior, he runs it. But it stays on the SD card, when you remove it, Pleo goes back to being the way he was before you put in the behavior.

With the LifeOS update, it actually updates Pleo's operating system. Like if you upgraded WIndows XP on a computer to Windows Vista.. (well sort of with out getting too technical)

So if this is all confusing think of it like a Nintendo Gameboy or DS, the behaviors are like the games you would play in the machine. They don't change the machine, when you want to play another game you pull that one out and put in another one. ::)

Quick question here.

I have just now gotten back into working with Pleo. I can get my Pleo Plox to go into watchdog mode (even after the 1.2 update). The little growl to start, the four head nods/tail wagging. But when he is in his "pointer" position, he doesn't bark at anything like he does on the videos. I can move my hand fast or slow in front of him, wave lights at him, etc. and nothing happens.

Anyone else have this happen? I was looking forward to seeing this mode too, and I'm starting to get worried that maybe Plox's camera is broken?

No, I can make him do the ta-da trick with no problem at all, either side. I'm sure he is in watchdog mode, he does all the right movements and sounds beforehand, just no barking at all... :(
